First visit to Venice: convenient for arrival via train and water bus to Zattere stop and for further water transport during our 5 day stay. Beautiful views across the Canale della Guidecca. This is not a crowded area of Venice (early October) so enjoyed walking throughout the area, to San Marco and beyond. You can find cheaper accommodation, but we...

In the Dorsoduro area so Lear the action but with many fewer tourists this hotel is the best place I've stayed in Venice. But the outstanding thing is the view from the front rooms over the Giudecca. Helpful service and friendly staff with a slightly lived-in ambience make it feel very homely. Will go again.

The hotel is attractive, excellently located, staffed by friendly and helpful people. It's quiet and has a pleasant atmosphere and is an interesting and historic building. The food in the restaurant is excellent with a traditional menu and the table service is discreet and efficient. It has a small but comfortable lounge with good views. I was surprised and rather...

My husband had a magical stay. Excellent staff, great and easy location & comfortable rooms. I would go back anytime. The food at the restaurant is delicious and a good value for money compared to other places in Venice.

Fantastic location and service. Away from 'the big crowds'. Fantastic views from rooms. The staff were very attentive and helpful. To be honest, the beds did not sleep very well. These were very hard and not what I expected from a hotel at this price range.

We sure picked the right hotel. Away from the crowds in a beautiful location. The service was just impeccable - at the restaurant on the water, in the cozy bar, on the rooftop terrace and in our room. Our room was sunny and airy, the food was excellent. Thank you for hosting us in this spectacular city.

I have travelled widely but La Calcina is my hotel. I try o visit it three times a year, book the same room and meet the same staff, eat in the same restaurant and gain inspiration for my work. I need total relaxation at times and find it in my 'home hotel'. Having a very special relationship to John Ruskin's...

The canal-side restaurant was always superb, with very friendly and attentive staff. Also, it was nice to be away from the crowds around San Marco. Good ferry connections from Zattere. Extra bonus was the view of arriving and departing cruise liners.

La Calcina is a very fine old hotel. The location is away from the crowds, yet still on the water and it is easy to get to the famous places of Venice. Their restaurant is floating on the water and serves excellent food with the fine view. The staff is most helpful and the atmosphere is very welcoming. I would...

Very good overall. Friendly and helpful staff, a good and moderately priced restaurant, and pleasantly situated on the Zattere close to the Accademia and Guggenheim with quick vaporetto connections to San Marco and elsewhere in Venice. Rooms overlooking the canal are expensive, but those down the side (where we stayed) are pleasant enough.

Staying in Dorsoduro / Accademia

Neighbourhood Profile
Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.
