Whilst I had been to Venice 3 times before, I had not stayed in this area. I was a little concerned at first about the nearness of the railway station but this was not a problem, in fact, a bonus if arriving by rail.
Had a lovely stay at the Hotel Carlton. It is well and truly on the Grand Canal - a quick walk across the bridge from the train station - very helpful if arriving by train. Beautiful views from the nicer rooms - we opted for...More
The hotel is definitely showing some age and wear/tear. Rooms a good size. Very clean. Bathrooms spacious and also very clean. Overall, seemed comfortable and quiet.

Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture
universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.

does have many stairs we counted about 65 up and 65 down Have seen boats taking people across from one side to another.I would personally ask the hotel to arrange for your transfer ..but have heard its very costly. Also arrange your hotel to fetch your luggage from station as we did not see anyone there and we had to carry our luggage across the bridge ourselves but arranged with the hotel porter to take back for us on leaving.2 suitcases was 20 euros
