The Hotel Carlton is located close to Venice’s main train station. The rooms were decent, clean and comfortable. Nice bathrooms. Good breakfast and dinner. Many restaurants in the area. A 30-45 minute walk from St. Mark’s Square.
Although our room was somewhat small, the hotel is in a good location (on the Grand Canal but removed from the tourist activity of St. Mark’s Square). The service was very good and the staff quite helpful. We would stay there again.
The location could not be better, right on the grand canal opposite the train station which is where the vaporetto stops. Walking is quick, right along the grand canal. The rooms are somewhat small, even by European standards, however comfortable. Try to get a view...More
This hotel is geared towards group travel, being located right near the train station. It is not particularly close to the highlights of Venice. The hotel was generally clean and breakfast had a good, tasty selection.

Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture
universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.

I am not sure how far the Hotel Carlton is from the airport, but by bus, the airport is about 10 minutes. The bus stop is just few yards from the hotel. Very easy. There is no trick, and the bus is easy, but make sure to double check to see that you are on the right bus. The bus tickets are quite inexpensive and have luggage racks. Sorry I can't remember the exact price per ticket.
No need to book trips. You can get around easy on foot, or water bus. The city is not big, but it is exciting. Go in the Doge's Palace in St Marks Square. Not expensive. Fantastic ceilings, great armoury displays. You get to... More
No need to book trips. You can get around easy on foot, or water bus. The city is not big, but it is exciting. Go in the Doge's Palace in St Marks Square. Not expensive. Fantastic ceilings, great armoury displays. You get to walk over the Bridge of Sighs on the inside on your way to walking round the prison. A good half day, well spent.
