"The Greats"- The hotel is near some good restaurants especially closer to Rialto. It is not too far from the main attraction for tourists- San Marco. However, I travelled to see the Biennale, which is closer to Gardini/Arsenale, which is a 25+ minute walk from the hotel (especially when San Marco is very crowded). The staff is always helpful. When...

In amongst the busy walkways we came across this lovely hotel so we decided to stop and have a coffee. The staff we're very accommodating and friendly. There is a lovely sun trap outside the hotel, which is lovely and peaceful which feels miles away from the main parts. The interior of the hotel looks great and is in keeping...

The room we stayed in was pretty small but adequate. As mention this is an old building and space is limited in Venice. The staff were helpful and spoke good English, The Hotel was a bit difficult to find initially because all the little lanes look the same in a historical way. Found the Rialto river bus stop the nearest....

Just stayed three nights at this hotel and overall was a pleasant experience. The staff were friendly and helpful. It is close to the shopping district in the San Marco area of Venice and it was clean. The breakfast is not fantastic but for a 3 star it's not bad either. The room however was a bit small and had...

Small hotel but very sweet, rustic looking one. The location is perfect, as the canal and St. Mark's Square are both a five-minute walk away. The staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable, even helping us with our suitcases up the stairs to the second floor without us asking, as there was no lift. The room was small but comfortable and...

Handily located in San Marco, do your research on the location before travelling as it could be difficult to find (and you can't get a taxi to the door in Venice). The rooms are small and some overlook only a light well. No lift. Continental breakfast. Clean and tidy. Just don't expect a four star hotel as it isn't, but...

Very good location of this hotel! Easy to find! It's about 5 min walk to San Marco square and same distance to grab canal! Hotel rooms are small (but I didn't expect it to be any bigger for a central Venice hotel), but clean and tidy! Hotel staff polite. The only down side is there was no kettle!!! Would be...

Great location and charming area and deco; friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff; and very cute and cozy rooms. Only complaint was our first floor ensuite bathroom smelled like the sewers - Venice!

In my 50 years of travelling. this was the WORST hotel I ever stayed in. They did not mention that there was no elevator. My room had windows that opened into an airshaf.t There was no one to speak with. The staff has limited English. The room looked like a large coffin and given the lack of windows., The breakfast...

Overall, we enjoyed this hotel; beautiful décor and rooms. No elevator, so be prepared for stairs. We had a canal view room on the second floor. Enjoyed the views, but if you're not prepared for some background noise from boats in the canal as early as 6 am, then reserve a room away from the canal. Good refrigerator and Internet....

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The building is historic and was once the residence of well-to-do merchants’ families. It was fitted out as a hotel in 1959, by the noble Sereni family, and extends over 4 floors, a typical period feature, facing onto the wonderful canal "dei barcaioli," reserved for gondolas. Thanks to the full-scale restoration in 2002, the Ateneo Hotel has maintained the unspoiled charm of a typical seventeenth-century Venetian residence. ... more   less
