Venice is old, its buildings crowded against one another, the are no sugardaddies looking to renovate small boutique hotels. So, the Gardena Hotel is typical of Venice- cozy rooms that are well appointed, in room wifi and a better than average breakfast. The manager was in contact with me 2 days prior to staying to advise he would try and...

Everything Venice about this hotel. Expensive and small room, but close to station so good for access when carrying luggage around. Breakfast was good, receptionist a little unapproachable but got the job done. Room was quiet, and close enough to good restaurants and the 'neighbourhood' side of Venice.

We were coming in late from the train station and I wanted an easy place to find and sleep on our 2 night stay in Venice. We landed at the Gardena Hotel. When you get off the train station it's basically across the canal, or about a 10 minute walk. The only bad part is you have to carry your...

Firstly the water pressure is miserable, secondly the aircond is not working, thirdly the room is so worn out...eg. bathroom door like about to fall off, carpet so worn out, bed so hard and can feel the spring, lastly most of the TV channel do not have good reception....so why pay for such bad accommodation in your trip and spoil...

Great hotel in a convenient location to the train station. Our room overlooked a canal and we also had views of the Grand Canal. It was opposite a beautiful public garden. Location was good and everything was within walking distance. Definitely good value for money.

Gardena Hotel is very convenient to the railway and to the airport bus station, (one bridge in either direction) which is a consideration if you are arriving at night or are only staying a few days. Venice is small but you will get lost trying to navigate to more distant parts of the city with luggage in tow at night....

We are staying here now . It is a nice hotel in a section of Venice that is quiet and preferable to the crowds at San Marco. The price is good for Venice and the breakfast was good.. They have great cappuccino! Definitely give this place a look!

My wife and I stayed here for a couple of nights. It was out of the heavy traffic area, because it's on the northern end of the canal, but still very convenient to the train station. Once we got the hang of the Vaporetto (ferry) system, we were able to see everything in Venice that we wanted to. For the...

We had the pleasure of staying at this exceptional little hotel overlooking a canal in Santa Croce. Conveniently situated for train and vaporetto or just wandering around beautiful Venice. The staff at the Hotel were exceptionally welcoming and helpful. We had a lovely room overlooking the canal, beautifully furnished, crisp white linen on the bed which was so comfortable, well...

Good hotel who stops for few days-nights. Comfortable room, quiet atmosphere, free internet and nearly bus&railway station. A bit far away from central part of city to walk. Not far from good places for dining and shopping. Was nice to stay there!

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.
