Stayed at hotel al sole - under a mates recommendation- it was beautiful- everything right down to the creaks in the floor had character- breakfast was basic fair, but complimentary is always a nice way to start the day... only issue was for the last night/day there was no hot water - so no showers or anything- and the wifi...

Lovely 15th C small hotel right by the canal, great bar next door - closes at 11pm. Good location 15 min walk to plaza Roma regular breakfast of ham cheese rolls and coffee. San Croce is a lovely location out of the hubbub but close enough to visit the sites. Will definitely return - only criticism is the shower -...

The hotel is around a 25 minute walk from the main canal and Rialto bridge, and 35 minutes from Piazza San Marco and Doge's Palace, but it still feels like you're very involved in the city. There is a bridge right opposite, so easy to get to the other side of the small canal if you want. We took a...

Beautiful, peaceful location overlooking a canal. Traditional Venetian style interior with clean rooms of a decent size. Continental breakfast was lovely, lots of tea and coffee choices and nice selection of other foods. Staff were very attentive, our mini fridge wasn't working and they fixed it straight away. Unfortunately the wifi wasn't working during our stay and as we checked...

Al Sole is one of those big palazzi subdivided into at times poky rooms; breakfast is good, service is fine, staff is pleasant. Pity the high windows are not mosquito-proof. Location is everything: easy equidistant distance from the ATVO bus to Marco Polo and the vaporetto San Toma. The area is great, and relatively tourist-free.

There are good things and bad things about this hotel, but overall I wouldn't stay there again. It is very convenient to the train station and buses to/from the airport. Most people said they had a good experience with the front desk staff. While they were pleasant, good customer service just wasn't there. Upon check in, we were shown to...

We have just stayed here for the 2 nights. The hotel has a beautiful reception area, it's a pity there isn't a bar as it would be lovely to sit there, especially at night. Room was basic but clean. Our shower would run very hot then cold and not much pressure but perhaps all of Venice is like this. There...

Hotel Al Sole is a delightful hotel, situated alongside a canal and a pretty bridge. The reception staff are very friendly and welcoming and they are very willing to advise on places to visit and how to get there. We stayed in a fine big room overlooking the canal. The room was well fitted out with a king size bed...

The hotel isn't great but its location is fantastic and the price is lower than the other hotels. Average room but just in the middle of everything. You can just step out of the hotel and be right there with the Venice that we all imagine. Ask for a room facing the street.

Hotel Al Sole is located by a quiet canal in a former palazzo in which features of the building's historic past are cleverly incorporated into a hotel with modern facilities. We spent four nights here and found it an ideal centre - literally five minutes from Piazzale Roma and the bus station and car parks, but in a very pleasant...

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.
