Stayed at the hotel for 2 nights. A (beautiful) 15mins walk from the piazza san marco or a 3min walk to the water taxi. The hotel is modern, very clean with friendly / helpful staff. The breakfast is first class compared to other hotels in this price bracket. The Sant'Elena is a great way to enjoy a quality break in... More

The hotel is in a good location, 200 metres from the Sant Elena waterbus stop, or a 15-20 minute walk from St Mark's Square. It is smart, newly decorated and clean, with a helpful staff. The breakfast buffet is excellent, with hot and cold choices. My double room was large, quiet and stylishly decorated - the bathroom was also large... More

We have just returned from a wonderful week-end at the Sant' Helena. The hotel is situated far from the madding crowds of central Venice in a residential area where "real people" live and go about their daily business but has easy access to the city centre via the vaporetto no.1 route which goes all the way up the Grand Canal.... Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
