This hotel was relatively cheap and we thought that the location was fairly good - of course you couldn't walk to every Rome attraction, but then who'd expect to be able to? After all, Rome is a huge city! But we enjoyed the short walk to the nearest hop on hop off bus stop and found that this was an... More

I just got back from a short three day vacation in Rome. The city was amazing and the hotel was a nice surprise. I invited my sister and mom to celebrate a book I've just released, but we had a tight budget, so we were lookin for something mid pricy. We payed 80 Euros per night for a triple, or actually... We are a family of 4 and stayed in a quad room. The hotel rooms are reasonably large and very clean. Bathroom is also reasonable in size and also very clean. Hotel breakfast is good, cereal, croissants (custard, chocolate or jam filled), cheese, ham, rolls, tea, coffee (cappaccino), hot chocolate, orange drink. After the mixed reviews we read we were... We booked the trip through CO-OP Travel after carrying out some research on the Web. It was our first time in Rome and having two children, 10 & 13, we wanted a hotel that was comfortable, safe and within walking distance of ammenities. We found the Espana offered a family room with two double beds (which could be separated if... More

Clean and pleasant room . Hotel located in a quiet back street which gave a surprisingly quiet location for a city centre base. Simple buffet breakfast. Conveniently located for the railway station and underground, but , given the metro closed at 9pm, it was a long walk or taxi ride of an evening to a pleasant eating area.

I do completely agree with the last opinion. I am surprised to read bad things about this hotel. I've come back today from Rome and I enjoyed my time there. I found it clean, it's true that the rooms are small, but I don't need more, the supermarket is close, you have the underground (although the nearest stop, Manzoni, is... More

I took my teenage daughter to Italy for a two week holiday and stayed at the Espana for five days. We both loved it. We never saw any criminal activity in the area and only saw beggars in the main tourist area. Our room was clean and perfectly adequate for two, the bathroom was small but not tiny and there... I didnt really know what to expect from Hotel Espana after reading mixed reviews. The hotel itself is nicely decorated and extremely clean and tidy. The rooms arent massive, but we arent complaining because we didnt spend much time there as there is so much to do in Rome!! The TV is italian cable with a few programmes in English,... More

We chose to go Cheep on the first leg of our honeymoon in Rome. The brochure said it was walking distance from all major attractions. And it was........ if you are prepared to walk for an hour through the roughest part of Rome! We read our travel book on the plane as we had been so busy with the wedding,... More

Staying in Esquilino

Neighbourhood Profile
Esquilino
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighbourhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighbourhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic centre. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.
