Just...wow. The hotel from reservation to past checkout was great. We were "picking up our daughter from school" (studying abroad and her apartment was in the amazing Trastevere neighborhood). This gem of a hotel was a quiet oasis in a busy neighborhood. We were able to reach the staff through WhatsApp. They gave us a great room (bathroom complete with bidet) upstairs with a patio outside.

Got an email with an offer for a private pickup from the airport for the same price as a taxi, which was great. The driver was waiting for us just outside customs. Such a nice touch after a long flight from California....

The hotel is behind a private gate. Once inside there is a wonderful little courtyard with fruit trees and tables where we had a nice cocktail from the little bar and breakfast room onsite. In the evening they offer some light bites and inventive cocktail offerings. In the morning an amazing spread of breakfast items...all fresh and locally sourced and the barista made us daily cappuccinos with art from our discussions...(San Diego skyline one day and our last day a broken heart because we were leaving!).

The staff always welcomed us with a smile and on the last day, kept all of our bags (and our daughter's stuff as well!) at the site so we could tour around before catching our plane, and then we got a private ride back to the airport as well.

Did I mention they have friendly hotel pets as well? Very friendly dog and cat on site if you are missing yours from home...

I love walking up to the ivy covered gate that is our hidden entrance. You really feel secluded with its courtyard that has orange and lemon trees everywhere. The staff is top notch, calling you by name every morning for breakfast and remembering that I like my Cappuccino "extra hot".
The breakfast has a nice variety of foods and is kept spotless. Our room is quaint and has a Mediterranean vibe. Bedroom/bathroom is upstairs in our room, and may be difficult to negotiate for some people, especially if you are tall as our room has sloped ceilings, but that adds to the charm of the place for us.

It would be hard to Imagine a better place. The rooms are small and comfortable with good heating and looks like they have air conditioning too. The beds are comfortable and the bath and shower provides plentiful hot water. The terraces and courtyards are beautiful and one can enjoy sitting out in the peace surrounded by orange trees. The locked complex feels safe and welcoming. The staff are so helpful and knowledgeable. We found Armando particularly helpful as he suggested some super places to visit that we’d not been to previously and also guided us to good places to eat.
The staff in the dining room are welcoming and the handmade coffees complete with artwork on top never fail to cause people to gasp and laugh. The cereals are delicious the breads and pastries very well chosen with choices of cake each day. The scrambled eggs are tasty and there is a good supply of meat and cheese. The yoghurts are good and so is the fruit. We could easily spend several hours chatting and nibbling over breakfast. The head off for a walk and return for drinks before going to one of the neighbouring restaurants. It’s such a great area to stay in with so many lovely little streets and places to see.
Oh and you can borrow bikes, umbrellas and eat free sweets
My only hesitation in recommending this hotel is that I fear with only 21 rooms that I’ll never be able to book a room here again if it gets the attention it deserves.

Absolutely perfect little spot, right in the heart of Trastavere - even though it's right in the middle of this vibrant area it's really quiet & peaceful. I think it was a convent once, but has been converted into this beautiful little hotel. Our room was lovely, little shuttered windows, clean, comfy, kettle for making coffee & tea, outside there's a really pretty patio with orange trees growing - if we had come later in the spring or summer we would have sat out in this little garden drinking coffee every morning & wine every evening! Breakfast is served right there in the hotel, just off the patio. And you can walk everywhere from here (if you're a good walker you can get to the Vatican in about 35/40 mins, or the Colloseum in about the same amount of time in the opposite direction. And maybe best of all there are so many little cafes, restaurants & bars right in the neighborhood, you won't have to get taxis or wander too far home at the end of the night:) And last but not least, the staff were so nice and helpful - can not recommend this place highly enough:)

I cannot speak highly enough of the Hotel Santa Maria and the wonderful staff who run this hotel. It is hard to believe you are within the centre of the vibrant and lively Trastevere. As you pass through the secure gates into the courtyard of the hotel, you have an immediate sense of peace and tranquility. The rooms are spotless, and the shared roof terrace with sun beds, and seating area under the orange trees in the quadrangle, provide lovely outside space where you can relax after a busy day in Rome. We enjoyed interacting with the amazing, attentive staff who are absolutely delightful!

In the middle of Trastevere, one of the most iconic places in Rome, you can find this little gem which is the Hotel Santa Maria. I couldn't have chosen a better place for my little roman holidays. Just entering in the wonderful garden surrounded by orange trees gives you a sense of peace and warm, thanks also to the amazing staff who has welcomed me and my friends in the most polite, friendly and lovely way possible.
It's a corner of paradise, it looks like you're more in an agritourism than in a hotel in the middle of Rome.
The rooms are simple and yet absolutely wonderful, with everything you need and with a high standard of cleaning and hygiene and everything has been prepared to respect the anti-covid19 rules.
The breakfast is simple amazing, you can join it in the garden under the orange trees and all the products are fresh and natural and very tasty.
There is also a solarium and a terrace where you can enjoy the wonderful view of trastevere. Also you have the chances to rent a bike for free from the hotel and discover all the surroundings.

We spent 3 nights here in December to celebrate birthdays. The hotel is in what used to be a convent. Although right in the heart of Trastevere, just across from the famous church, it is remarkably quiet; entering through the iron gates you walk along a driveway to reach reception, and the rooms are beyond, around attractive inner courtyards, with trees, outside tables, etc. An attractive breakfast room offers a good choice (hot dishes too) from the buffet, while friendly and obliging staff will bring you freshly made tea or coffee. The room doubles as a bar in the evenings (with complimentary nibbles at 'happy hour' on Saturdays), and there is another pleasant lounge, with books and games. The bedrooms are simple but comfortable, clean, and well looked after. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. It was inexpensive too.

There are not very many city hotels that I would stay in for an entire week, but Hotel Santa Maria is definitely one of them. It is a total oasis from the hustle and bustle of Rome. All the rooms open onto the courtyard, so they are quiet and open to fresh air. There are multiple places to relax: in the courtyard, terrace, lounge or bar area. Breakfast is included and afternoon appetizers. The staff was extremely accommodating and all spoke English (my Italian is awful). Beds were comfortable and rooms were very clean. I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

We've just had four nights at the Santa Maria and were very happy with our experience. Although the room was on the small size it was very clean and comfortable with comparable en-suite which provided everything we needed. The day started with a buffet breakfast which was excellent and then it was off to see the sights. You can walk everywhere from the hotel so no need to take metro/taxi's etc. Then back in the evening for happy hour (17:30-19:30 with nibbles) and then out a few steps into vibrant Trastevere (still can't pronounce it properly!) for food of which there is a huge choice.
We loved staying at the Santa Maria - I've spent most of my working life staying in hotels but this is one of the best; comfortable, hospitable, and affordable. Don't think Marriott/Hilton etc, think more rustic alpine and you won't be disappointed.

I had a fabulous long weekend at Hotel Santa Maria and hope to be back soon. Trastevere is a busy neighbourhood, but you step through the hotel gates into peace and tranquility. The welcome when I arrived was really warm (and included a sleepy golden retriever, always a good sign!). My room was clean and cool which was fabulous because outside it was very hot and humid, the aircon was very effective throughout my stay. The bathroom was quite large for Rome (in my limited experience), with a bath and overbath shower that was very powerful. The breakfast selection was very nice, with great cappuccino, and the staff were really friendly.
From the hotel I walked to the Vatican and to the Trevi fountain, but if you don't fancy the walk then its only minutes away from the Tram to Piazza Venezia, and several different bus routes.

Yes, The rooms are large but slightly outdated. While I would certainly not want to spend a week here, a couple of days while passing through would be fine. I guess it would all depend upon your budget.

Hello! Taxis are very available, not sure about the price to the colosseum but I would guess less than 20 euro. Honestly, I think you will like being a bit out of the way more than you think. Rome is a very busy and chaotic city, this hotel is such a lovely respite.
