We have recently returned from a short (but disappointing) stay at the Hotel des Artistes. The disappointment began from the first moment we got there. The reception is on the fifth floor, where we ascended via a rickety, rattling archaic lift (which could barely hold one person with two average pieces of luggage), to be met by a "fakely polite","foreign" Italian woman...

Des Artistes wouldn't take a reservation by phone, but made us track down a computer while we were on vacation to send them an email. Reception is on the 5th floor, so we lugged our bags into the tiny lift, and spent in excess of 15 minutes to check in. We then found out we had to not only go...

Firstly I had read reviews that the reception was on the 5th floor and the lift was rather small, considering this I opted to book, I should have heeded the other reviews. The lift is FAR TO SMALL, max 2 people without luggage and very awkward to operate. Our rooms were not assigned according to our booking where we were...

Not a bad little hotel although first impressions are not overly favourable. One arrives in a small but pleasant lobby to see a sign stating reception is on the 5th floor. The minute lift, running up through the stairwell, is a squeeze for two people with anything more than rucksack-sized bags. The reception desk area is 'cosy' as long as...

We just returned from our stay at Hotel des Artistes. We were on a budget and had trouble finding a resonably priced place available for our trip so we stayed in the "hostel" portion of the hotel located on the 5th floor (the same as reception). After great hotel stays in Florence and Venice, this was definitely a let-down. We...

The web-site promised everything. I booked because I thought they were going to have a Chrismas package. Not available, so I kept the booking anyway. After a 26 hour flight we arrived on the 5th floor of this place and were asked for payment (cheaper for cash) straight away before even saying hello let alone viewing the rooms. Staff were...

This is a great, typical Italian hotel, the breakfast is tops and it is a steal considering how close it is to the attractions. As per the earlier review the roof garden is amazing, even in February my boyfriend and I sat up here enjoying the sun and the fantastic array of pastries we were served up for breakfast. The...

This is a great value hotel for the price, (especially if you pay cash on arrival); comfortable, quiet and clean rooms, very generous breakfasts and efficient service. It is a hike down to the forum, etc. but close to the station and 2 metro lines if the walking is too much for you! The reviews were spot on and we...

The hotel itself was satisfactory. The bed was two twins pulled together, each with extremely hard mattresses. I slept fine, but my boyfriend did not. Clean room, quiet hotel. The staff was not rude, although they were not exceedingly friendly either. Breakfast consisted of cereal, ham, cheese, bread, canned fruit (not happy about that one), water and juice (not fresh)....

The Hotel des Artiste is a warm, non pretentious spot to park yourself in Rome. It is a less then 10minute walk to Termini station- which is handy if you land at Fiumicino airport as a train goes direct to Termini from there. I believe there is a metro station nearby but I never used it. As this was my...

Staying in Esquilino

Neighbourhood Profile
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighbourhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighbourhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic centre. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.
