This is a hard review to write as I have such conflicted feelings about the Gran Melia which we do really like. The pool is FANTASTIC, most staff are very friendly and helpful, breakfasts are very good and Trevestere area 5 minutes away is filled with life & non-touristy restaurants but really there are some dumb flaws in the design...

We were at this hotel for 3 days. The location was great, just across from the Vatican. The room was spacious with an ok view. But the neatest part of the room was the shower! When we walked in, we stood in disbelief. A king size bed, and a giant glass shower...When I say giant, I mean at least four...

I stayed here last week. Without question, this is a gorgeous property. Fabulous pool area, well appointed rooms, attentive staff. A couple of issues stop me from giving it 5 stars. First, a diet coke at the pool cost 8 euros!! Seriously!? That's ludicrous. More importantly , the only bar in the lobby is a beautifully decorated room which no...

Staying in Trastevere

Neighbourhood Profile
Trastevere
Trastevere ("beyond the Tiber") is like a faded postcard, a little worn around the edges but still charming. With its wide-open piazzas, meandering streets, weathered Renaissance buildings, and overgrown personality, it's become an irresistible mecca for visitors. Trastevere is an enclave of entertainment - a rotating set of street performers entertains almost every night, and unforgettable eateries and bars pepper its piazzas and side streets. For a trip to the past, visit the southern and western flanks of Trastevere for pockets of yesteryear, less traversed areas with a residual 1960s and 70s Roman vibe.
