I found hiring a car the best way. If booked in advance is works out really reasonably priced. It meant that we could fly in - get the car. drive to the hotel we were staying in, visit all the sites without having to rely on public transport (and run the risk of pickpockets), then transfer ourselves back to the airport to go home. We didnt encounter any problems with vandalism or theft of the car. We were able to visit Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Mt Vesuvius in our own time and pace
