It is actually difficult to put into words how much we enjoyed the visit to Matera and our stay at the Basiliani - everything was just perfect. The room, The breakfast, The Staff, The location - all absolutely perfect. The hotel is in the old part of town away from the main tourist areas and it was so quiet on...

This is definitely the place you wanna stay while in Matera. The hotel is located in the Sasso Caveoso neighborhood, and its spread across different unique caves, with shared reception and breakfast rooms. Each room is unique, with contemporary and stylish furnitures and amazing views of the Gravina and the old Matera just outside the entrance door. The breakfast buffet...

I stayed at the Basilicata Hotel in Matera as part of an Edelweiss Motorcycle Company tour of southern Italy last October. The hotel lobby and rooms are located in caves that are part of the Sassi area of old Matera. Since the rooms are constructed from individual caves, there are no connecting corridors between the lobby and the individual rooms...

We have been to Matera for a weekend and this Hotel was simply perfect for us. All attractions were walking distance from the Hotel and the breakfast was also very nice. The rooms were spacious and very clean with a view overlooking the valley.

My wife and I stayed here on our honeymoon in October of 2014. My apologies to the staff for taking so long to write this review. Staying in Matera was actually a last minute decision and one I will always remember. I only wish I would have had more than one night to enjoy the Sassi. The hotel was truly...

Great receptionist who helped us when we got lost coming from where we parked our car.I felt so bad that he insisted on carrying our heavy bags, even for the short distance involved. Huge and beautifully-designed rooms in previous cave dwellings. Wonderful breakfast with lots of locally sourced produce and real Italian coffee to order. Our girls particularly liked the...

Definitely a unique experience. Everything about Matera is unique and special and Hotel Basiliani only complements the time spent in the city. We spent three nights at the hotel, which we had initially thought might be too much, but that was not the case. Matera is a place that continues to surprise around every little bend and up each alleyway....

My family and I spent (unfortunately!) just one night but we had an amazing experience. Damiano, at the reception, was full on: very kind, professional and he also helped us with booking restaurants and sightseeing. The room had a fantastic view and to us was the perfect hotel to have the Matera experience: it is IN THE SASSI! Great breakfast...

We were intrigued by the reviews and website of this hotel, we booked a room for the night that we were visiting Matera. This hotel is a series of caves that face onto the street, we stayed in room(cave) 111 which has a loft and two en-suite bathrooms. On our arrival we phoned the hotel and they came to pick...

Great location at the end of the town. Really magical. Fantastic views. Very nice service - they came and picked me up in my car and took me somewhere where I could park it for free. Very nice room however: - bathroom needs some updating. The bathtub is chipped, the toilet seat is broken and smells of urine - the...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The hotel is located in the heart of Sasso Caveoso, Matera. There are eleven large rooms with independent access and all the modern technological comforts. They are partly built and partly caved out of the local tufa stone.
