We just stayed last week at this hotel and it was the most interesting place I have ever stayed--- and I have traveled a lot and am very picky about hotels. Very rustic, authentic, yet stylish and comfortable. The rooms are in an ancient cave dwelling -- actually part of my room was in the cave. It really made the...

We stayed at the Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita in June for a night passing through Basilicata on our way to Puglia. We wished we had another few nights at this amazing hotel and city. The hotel wasn't the easiest to find, but once there it was an amazing stay. The staff was warm and welcoming and upgraded our room....

This place is very special. Our room was simple and rustic in feel, yet also luxurious and comfortable. The wooden door and iron key help create the feel of living in a medieval village. The staff are first rate. We were very well looked after from the moment we arrived, to when we had to sadly say goodbye. Special shout...

One night in a cave-room. In the beginning of last century, people lived here with there animals, for the heat. Restauration is exemplar. Almost invisible but very respectful for the past The only thing: if you have claustrophobia... Only a small window

Simply Incredible. We had visited Matera previously and just been blown away seeing how these caves were being transformed into deluxe accommodation. Whilst walking around, we were able to peek in and see some of the rooms! When I heard about an offer to stay here, I booked it immediately. I recall it was about an hours drive from Bari...

One year later and this hotel just keeps getting better. I dread the day it becomes so popular I can no longer get a room. Married here in this stunning place a year ago and returned for our first anniversary. Neither the hotel or its people disappointed - attention to detail, care, hospitality and a real genuine warmth. Thank you...

I had been preparing my husband, who is most certainly a luxury seeker, for weeks for the stay in this hotel. When we arrived, he said he expected it to be more cave-like ! I did book the tiniest room, and later tried to upgrade to a room that was more cave-like, without success because it was Easter. Our room...

Nothing can prepare you for staying in a cave. Once you get used to it it is the most weird yet pleasing experience. The complex of caves is so interesting. The hotel staff were the nicest and most helpful we've ever come across in all our years of travelling. Breakfast is in a big cave and ok, lots of cakes...

Matera is a stunning place, even for seasoned travellers. And what better way to explore a cave city than to stay in a cave complex!! The hotel is spread out over several levels, and each cave is done up in a unique and thoughtful style; and the views over the adjacent national park are truly stunning. Things are somewhat more...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Matera can be found in the south of Italy and is world famous because of its Sassi quarters, a stunning and well preserved example of a village where hundreds of caves were turned into dwellings, churches and palaces. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993, the Sassi represent a unique hamlet throughout Italy: the earliest inhabitants date back to the stone and bronze age, in the middle ages it boasted several monastic communities and later became a vibrant farming centre, owing to the rich harvests from the surrounding hills and plains. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is placed in the oldest part of the Sassi quarters, the CIVITA, facing the spectacular Murgia park and its rock-hewn churches. It comprises 18 rooms (some of them exceeding 160m²) and an ancient church, the "Cripta della Civita," now used as a common area, all renovated to retain their original features. The Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita project is situated in the historical heart of Matera. The 18 caves have been renovated in full respect of the local heritage. Each cave reveals the original shape and materials. The interior design, the respectful and minimalistic approach of Sextantio is reflected in the plain furniture elements. The guests will experience a particular atmosphere evoking the cultural and human history of the Sassi of Matera. ... more   less
