On my first trip to Europe I wanted to do the hostel thing. Sungate provided a welcoming and fun experience. I came to Madrid solo and they were a great welcome to the city and Spain. Here is what I liked. -Staff was extremely helpful and welcoming. They provided good suggestions for activities and pointed out some good stuff that...

We had a pleasant stay. Everyone working in this hostel is pleased to help you with every matter you might have. If you want you can join free walking tours, dinner and clubbing. It is perfectly clean and the location could not be better. I will come back because it was so much fun.

The Sungate One is the best hostel I ever stay at. The day I arrived, I was warmly welcomed by the manager Angel. All the staff are friendly and always available to give help and informations. They are not there only to locate rooms; they are there because they are oriented towards people and want that our stay in Madrid...

The free dinners really help facilitate meeting people as do the other activities the hostel organizes. I hardly noticed I was traveling by myself! I made so...

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
