Absolutely satisfied with the hotel. Since we had arrived in Madrid at 8:00am (and hadn't gotten any sleep on the plane), we were anticipating a long wait to check in. Instead we were assigned a room by 9:30 am and were able to rest before adventuring into Madrid. The room was large and clean with a great marble bathroom. Had...

We stayed at the Hotel II Castillas and were pleased with our room. The hotel is located on a small street near the Gran Via. The room was very clean with all of the necessary amenities. Internet usage is free if the traveler has his/her own laptop and network cable. The breakfast buffet is fine. There is no on-site parking,...

My husband and I have both traveled through Europe before, so when we checked into Dos Castillas for a few nights' stay in Madrid, we were expecting a tiny room with minimal amenities and lots of street noise. Boy, were we amazed and incredibly pleased! PROS: First, the location is fabulous. We were about 2-3 "blocks" away from Puerta del...

Date: 14 May 2007 Reviewer: Trip Advisor Member, Fife, Scotland My wife and I stayed at the hotel on a four night break commencing Monday 7 May 2007. This was our first visit to Madrid and we were looking for a central hotel within walking distance of the Madrid main sights. Hotel was booked through Central Reservations website and cost...

This hotel is located off Gran Via, a busy street with numerous shops and from where you can pick up one of the open top buses to explore Madrid. The hotel room where we stayed was comfortable and spotless and I liked the novelty of the his and her washbasins. However there was one very silly design feature to the...

Stayed at Hotel Castillas with my husband from Apr 12th to 16th.Made our decision to stay here based on good reviews. Bit surprised to see it has dropped in the ratings recently but then I would agree that its initial rating was perhaps too high. Our room was on the 6th floor and was an inside room which made it...

Arrived at Puerto Del Sol about 11pm and asked a local taxi where thehotel was ..... never heard of it!! Asked the next driver, again never heard of it! This happened about 6/7 times and that was with showing people the name and address on paper! Eventually a taxi took us to the hotel, but even then he was unsure...

Like others here I booked this hotel on the basis of its Trip advisor No.1 ranking. I noticed just before I departed for Madrid it had slipped down to number 19 and is now even further down the ranking. I would have to say that I agree that it should never have been no.1. The hotel in itself is functional...

Like many others, we booked this hotel on the basis of its No. 1 ranking at the time. It certainly didn't live up to that position. The room we were shown faced directly to a bar which was making a lot of noise and looked as if it would go on doing so during the night. We got moved to...

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
