a small contemporary hotel next to the botanical gardens and ten minutes from Plaza Major. OK, very touristy area and can be noisy at night because the Spainish are night owls but so full of life. Resturants cater to tourists and so can be over priced. Located right on the Hop On bus line (recommended). The rooms are small but...

Location, service and cleanliness make this boutique type hotel a real gem. No, it does not have all the bell and whistles of a five star and it does not claim to be this type of establishment. In my opinion, this hotel's location is better for touring than any five star, including the Ritz and Westin. It is within walking...

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in mid September. We arrived at approximately 4 pm, got our room right away and found it quite pleasant and clean. The location is also great as it is very close to the Royal Palace, minutes from a Metro station and Puerta Del Sol on foot. Granted it lacks...

The place is actually 3 star quality and more motel-operated There is no service with luggage and the breakfast is indeed lackluster What annoys me most is that I requested a higher floor a month ahead and they ended up giving me a room on the first floor! Save your money and go elsewhere! Even the Expedia unpublished 5 star...

As mentioned this hotel is in a great location. It's off the Gran Via by a few hundred metres but oh so quiet and clean. I've stayed in Madrid ca. 5 times and this is the best location. The hotel itself is relatively small which again is a plus. However it does lack facilities. Even though the website says it...

I stayed at Hotel Opera towards the end of July 2012. I had arrived to Hotel Opera at around 8am and they settled me into my room right away which is unheard of in most hotels not only in Spain, but also in the States. The concierge was bilingual and extremely helpful. There is a restaurant and bar downstairs which...

This hotel is in a great location in central Madrid, across the street from the Teatro Real, and a 10 minute walk from the Plaza Mayor, and near a major subway station. Would highly recommend one of the top floor rooms, our's had a huge terrace with a spectacular view over the city. It also had a jacuzzi which we...

This is not really a 4 star hotel, let´s say it´s a good 3 star one. The location is excelente in Madrid´s center but the rooms are small, the bathroom does nor have a bidet and the service is slow. I will not stay there again. For the same price there are better options. Did not try the restaurant but...

I stayed at Hotel Opera based on a review by Rick Steves. I was more than happy with the selection. The rooms were nice. The staff was an incredible help to us despite our language barrier. The location was within walking distance of everything (might be long to the park and museums for some). The airline lost our luggage for...

We stayed at this lovely hotel for a total of 6 days in July- 3 days at the beginning of our 2 week trip and 3 days at the end of our vacation. We were immediately made to feel comfortable here. The front desk welcomed us to a clean and modern room right in the middle of Madrid. Hotel Opera...

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
