It is more than worthwhile to stretch your budget to stay at the Parador Hostal dos Reis Católicos, possibly the crown jewel of Spain’s Parador hotels.

The rooms are small but comfortable, with cable TV, WiFi, and large bathrooms that include separate bathtubs and shower. The beds are luxurious. The breakfast buffet is one of the best I’ve known, and includes a very large selection of local treats, pastries, breads, fruits, juices, coffee, and chocolate. There are two restaurants in the basement.

Over the two days we stayed at the Hostal, we spent a couple of hours walking the halls and patios, reviewing the building’s fabled history. Built in the early XVI century by the crown of Spain to serve pilgrims, the building’s façade is in the Plateresque style. Meaning "in the manner of a silversmith,” this style appeared in Spain in the late 15th century with an eclectic blend of Mudéjar, Flamboyant Gothic and Lombard decorative, and Renaissance elements. The Hostal has four colonnaded and interconnected courtyards; two date from the sixteenth century and two from the eighteen hundreds, each with a water fountain or well. There is a vaulted chapel in the middle. The hostal served as a hospital until 1954, when after a year of intense renovations it was included into the Parador system as a world-class hotel. In 1957, it served as a set for the “Pride and the Passion,” a period drama with Cary Grant, Sophia Loren, and Frank Sinatra.

Located on the north side of the Praza do Obradoiro, the end of the pilgrimage trail, a few steps from the cathedral and a few minutes’ walk to all the key points of the historic center of the city.

The Parador at Santiago is, after the cathedral, probably the second most important visit in town, and staying here is well worth the time and money. The hotel is a living museum in its own right, and we set aside a good hour and a half, using the helpful leaflet Reception will give you, walking round, reading the information plaques and discovering hidden corners. Later, we enjoyed sitting by the fire in the comfortable sitting room enjoying drinks, before a wonderful tasting menu dinner in their restaurant. Our room was lovely- off the main patio, with high ceilings and great views over the countryside behind town. This is a stylish hotel, and deservedly one of only two five-star Paradores, but it also has a very welcoming and pleasant atmosphere, with great staff, and this makes it all the more enjoyable. We finished the Camino Frances here, and it was truly the best way to celebrate. Whatever brings you to Santiago, you won't be disappointed by its Parador.

The Parador was a lovely reward after 35 days walking the Camino de Santiago and staying in a mixture of hostels, guest houses and 1 star hotels, some of which were okay and others not so good. The day I arrived in Santiago was cool, grey and soggy, the sort of day when it is much better to be inside and it was very good to have a conveniently situated hotel at the end of the 779 km walk. It is a beautiful historic building both outside and in, in an austere sort of way. The reception staff spoke excellent English and I was into my room very quickly. This is one of those places that names its floors to impress rather than for accuracy so I was on the 4th floor which is actually the 3rd floor as there is no 2nd. It was also the top floor and had a view of the cathedral spires if you looked a bit sideways. The room was on the small side but adequate with a comfortable double bed, closet and cupboard plus a dining chair with arms and small side table. The bathroom was bigger than many with the shower over a tub. Everything was very clean with all bathroom amenities sealed with sanitary labels. My one complaint concerned the heating. I was rained on and damp on arrival and the room was cold. There was a thermostat but it didn't turn anything on. I suspect it was only for the air conditioning that was switched off for the season. The radiators were cold and when I enquired about them I was told that the heating was on a timer and wasn't switched on until 7pm. I am not sure how long it stayed on but I woke up cold in the night and the heating wasn't switched on again until early morning. I admit to being easily chilled but think that none the less there should be some way of warming a room that doesn't require waiting until the programmed radiators start up.

That aside this is a lovely hotel. It was very quiet, possibly enhanced by the few guests due to coronavirus and the thick carpets in the hallways. The wifi was excellent. There was big lounge with many chairs and sofas on the ground floor and also a bar. Unfortunately, due to coronavirus restrictions the bar was unable to serve food or drink inside but could do so in the courtyard. The hotel is also close to the pilgrim's office for walkers wanting to collect their compostela and of course the cathedral is on the same square. I would be very happy to return but perhaps at a warmer time of year.

We had been planning to visit this Parador for some time and the relaxation of COVID restrictions gave us the opportunity to plan a little road trip in early September. So much has been written about the history of the hotel but even we were surprised at how much of the original building has been preserved. To access the hotel by car you have to drive through a restricted, pedestrian only area and we gained access after the bollards retracted into the ground. As we approached the hotel the concierge was waiting to take our luggage and the car was valet parked. Check in was seamless and we were taken to our room, which was large, clean, and comfortable. We had a welcome note from the director and a small box of chocolates, a nice touch. The hotel just oozes history and whilst walking around there are explanations of parts of the building and of the city itself. Everything at the hotel was run with military precision, very professional yet friendly and attentive. The standard of service was easily the best we have encountered at a Parador, (and we have now visited 36). The restaurant was fabulous, again first class service and amazing food. The only downside was that on the second night I ordered crepés from the dessert menu and was told they were not available. Surely this could not have been through a lack of ingredients, so really should not occur at a five star establishment. Overall an amazing experience and would love to return.

We stayed two nights in this parador while visiting Santiago. It’s a large hotel - our room was a 5 minute walk from the front desk. But the room was very large and comfortable, with plenty of storage space. The bed was comfortable and there were 2 pillows each. The bath had a tub and very large shower. The amenities were nice. The building is very old so the floors creak when you walk, but the hotel itself seemed quiet enough. The staff was friendly and helpful. If you’re driving, you drive into the restricted cathedral square & the staff valet parks. The hotel has two restaurants. We had an excellent dinner in the more formal of the two. There is an excellent spread in the breakfast room, with a wide range of items available both from self-serve tables and from the attentive staff. Because of the number of guests, even though the breakfast room is large you have to reserve a particular hour for breakfast. As the parador fronts the cathedral square, there is no better spot to be in Santiago!

You pay a premium for this hotel’s convenient location and for the history, but not much else. We finished the Camino and we were happy to find the hotel right across from the cathedral. The staff was professional but definitely not the most hospitable we encountered on our Camino, and definitely not the level of hospitality I would expect from a “5*+ Grand lux” category hotel. The breakfast was great but the staff working the breakfast room couldn’t be bothered about a single thing. Hotel amenities for a hotel of this category were lacking. We only received a free water bottle on our first night, we stayed 3. It was raining during our stay and we needed an umbrella. The reception told me they did not have complimentary umbrellas, but that I could purchase one from them! I found it very surprising that they don’t have umbrellas for guests to borrow given how much it rains in Santiago. Less importantly for us, there is no turndown service, no swimming pool, and no fitness center. We reserved a room for 3 people which according to photos on online travel agencies like Amex show 3 twin beds. Our room had two twin beds pushed together and a pull-out sofa bed. Gladly we were on the top floor, our windows faced an inner courtyard. We paid a premium for a room that was less than adequate for 3 adults. I recommend getting a room for 2 adults and requesting a roll away bed for about 90 euro extra a night which will save you some money for the same level of comfort. The room overall was pretty clean, reasonably updated- but the shower was kind of moldy, the shower drains a bit slow, and we found a nail clipping under the pull out couch. Since we were also in town for a med school graduation we were surprised to find that the room was not equipped with an iron. We also got to experience the hotel’s catering during a private lunch in the basement to celebrate the graduation. The staff working the private room were professional but again, nothing notable about their hospitality. The catering was fine. Overall, this hotel was convenient for us given all the graduation activities were nearby, but it was definitely not worth the premium. Also it used to be a hospital so if you believe in the paranormal maybe this isn’t the place for you.

We had very high expectations for this hotel in Santiago de Compostela. It was rated a five star hotel but our experience would highly disagree
We booked this hotel during our recent trip to Spain’s North Coast including Galicia
The prices for a standard room were quite high and so we were expecting the best of services and accommodations
First problem was that they never responded to numerous emails requesting information about parking our rental car. The hotel is on the main Cathedral plaza and it’s really open only to foot traffic. We ended up parking in a busy downtown public lot band walking to the hotel
Once there we were Informed that they did have parking and we could actually drive through the pedestrian area as guests of the hotel
The staff person checking us in was less than friendly and seemed annoyed with our questions. We had to reserve a time for breakfast and he basically told us what time we should eat
Finally we arrived at our room on the first floor off the courtyard. It was small and dingy. The beds were so uncomfortable that we had trouble sleeping the first night. Subsequently we requested a room with newer beds and were assigned a nicer room on the third floor. The beds were better but not great
On our second and final night we made reservations for dinner in the less formal dining room called Enxebre. Our wait person was inattentive and curt with us. If the food had been good we could have forgiven service however it was very bad one of us had the chicken which was a smaller rolled up piece of boiled chicken. With no flavor. The other meal the veal which was chewy and tasted boiled. The potatoes were stale
And dry and the pimientos burnt
For what this hotel costs and the less
Than stellar service we recommend staying elsewhere

Dear 188martyf, First of all, thank you for the time in writing this review and pass on your review and experience at the hotel. We inform you that we have a reception team that responds to all emails, you may have received it for spam, sorry for the inconvenience, it is something that we can not control, but we do encourage you to call us next time if you do not receive a response to the email and we will help you via phone. Due to the pandemic that we are suffering worldwide, we have had to take several measures to ensure your safety and that of the rest of customers, for this reason we have limited the capacity of breakfast reservations by hourly stretch. Thank you for commenting on the comfort of the mattresses in the beds, we are changing all the mattresses in the hotel and we appreciate your opinion. As for the food of the restaurant, all our products pass the required quality controls, we regret that they have not been of your taste and we will take it into account to continue improving. We hope that there is something of the establishment that you have liked, we will take note of every detail to continue improving day by day. We are at your disposal. Thank you A greeting,

Arrived to a very chaotic reception area. Requested table in the restaurant for our second evening and was told the restaurant was full on all nights of our stay? I asked to speak to a manager and none were available. The receptionist consulted a member of the restaurant staff who just shrugged and said "full"? Needless to say we were not impressed as this is supposed to be a 5 star hotel. Our room was very cramped and would fail health and safety measures in the UK or Ireland. A metal light fitting was perilously hanging from the ceiling with bare wires visible! The bed was very small with 2 wooden lamps on hinges attached each side of the bed which were dangerous so we had to swing away from the bed to avoid being blinded. We requested a room overlooking the square but were allocated a room at the rear of the hotel. We had waited 2 years for this trip due to Covid restrictions but will not be visiting this Parador hotel again. We just hope that other Parador hotels in Spain are more welcoming and safer to stay at. History is very important but equally so is safety with a courteous attitude to all it's guests.

Regarding the room, we regret that it has not lived up to your expectations, we will take into account suggestions for improvement. It would be a pleasure to welcome you again another time and be able to improve the experience. Thank you very much A greeting,

This precious building can be confused easily with the rest of the monumental historic buildings that form the main square of Santiago, right next to the Cathedral, that´s because it is. The gorgeous building, built initially in 1500 as a Royal Hospital for pilgrims of the Way of St. James, is reinforced by high-end service standards, parking, rooms, breakfast, and all amenities are care for with exquisite detail; everything conspiring to present an extraordinary travel experience, worthy of a place that by its own right is a heritage of Spanish culture. For those who like to wake to the sight of a charming inner garden, or to the square, please don´t hesitate your relation quality-price is guaranteed. In Santiago I will not stay in other place if I´m not strongly advice to explore a new place, meanwhile this is the best safe place to land at the end of a long journey.

We just used Google maps on my iPhone and it worked like a charm… you can drive into the plaza if you are staying at the parador and they will take your car once you ck in and park it for you. Beautiful hotel and the breakfast is bountiful and delicious. Enjoy!

Sorry, we drove to the parador so I do not know about shuttles to and from the airport. Nonetheless, the staff at the parador is amazing and I am sure that they can arrange anything you want or need. If you want to be picked up at the airport, obviously you would need to contact the parador in advance and ask for the concierge to help you.
