I stayed here 4 years ago and had a Wonderful stay, scroll back and see my review from 2018. Based on that I had high expectations which were not quite met.

The biggest thing was EVERYTHING and I mean everything was an extra fee, even down to someone in our group paid to do laundry but it was another €1 on top for detergent. You did get a towel in private rooms but nit in dorms and the luggage rooms were paid for time rather than just one fee. And I’ll say I stayed in 7 different places during my holiday and this was the only place I had to pay for luggage storage.
Last time the breakfast upstairs was outstanding, but there was not the same choice so on morning I had the group breakfast. I stayed a few nights alone and more in a group. There was not much storage space in the private rooms and the furniture on the balcony needed a good clean.
Despite all that I did enjoy my stay, the facilities in the dorms are very good and I liked that the toilet was in a separate room so you didn’t have to waste if someone was showering.
I would definitely consider returning, though would consider other places also, this time I jumped straight and booked Generator

The continental breakfast was the most notable part of the stay at Generator Hostel for me, though not for positive reasons. It consisted of cheese, ham, bread that was still wet and frozen in the middle (2 hours after the start of breakfast), heavily watered down orange juice that didn't taste of anything, strawberry yogurt and a coffee machine. In fairness to the coffee machine, it made great hot chocolate! The coffee however was deeply questionable. It had scum an inch thick on top of it and was absolutely revolting.

The beds in the 8-bed dorm-style private room were comfortable enough, though the pillows were uncomfortable and the pillowcases weren't cases at all, just cylinders of fabric with a hole at either end. There was no other form of seating in the rooms. so it wasn't the most comfortable for hanging out in the evening before going out for a meal. If you're an individual traveller or just booking somewhere to lay your head down, it's adequate, but if you're in a group and have booked a private room it's a shame that there's no seating.

The noise is slightly ridiculous at night, though this isn't entirely the fault of Generator, of course. We heard gunshots one night which was slightly terrifying, and what sounded like deliveries or bin collections at about midnight to 1am every day. The others in the hotel were also quite inconsiderate - we had a gaggle of teenagers running around outside our room until 4am, screaming and shouting, and we witnessed multiple fistfights amongst guests while there.

The aircon in the room didn't work, and when we inquired at the front desk we were told very sharply "Winter. No aircon.". That's all well and good but it was 22 degrees each day and as weak Brits it was bloody warm! Speaking of sharply, some of the staff were exceptionally rude and unhelpful. Some were polite and kind, but the bad ones were spectacularly bad.

I'd say that Generator is fine if you just want somewhere to sleep at night, but if you're going for a longer trip or you'll be spending any time within the hostel, don't stay here. Definitely buy breakfast elsewhere too!

This place is beautiful and the people who run it are the NICEST. My room was so cozy, I slept for 10 hours my first night… I had a room to myself on the 7th floor and I had no issues with noise. This was my third trip to Barcelona so I’d never explored this neighborhood before but I liked it a lot as well - it’s cute, very safe, with the Sagrada Familia a short walk away and great food all around. The train station is close, about a 12 euro taxi ride, but if you’re going to the airport it will cost about three times that. Either way, I will definitely come back here, it’s worth it. Thanks guys!!

The service here is great in terms of the staff being notably friendly and helpful, and my overall impression was that the Generator has a really good sense of how to structure a combined hostel and hotel. I stayed in a solo room with a balcony and had great experience. Large comfortable bed in a simple room that was nice, as well as easy to relax in. No noise from the hostel rooms
below, and solo room floors have a separate elevator, which is a smart touch.

I was in Bcn for a week on my own so I tried the hostel thing in order to meet people etc. Overall my experience of Generator has been great.

Location
It's location is hard to beat: it's very centric and close to everything. Also in a safe neighborhood. And, if you're ok with sharing a room with others, the price is a total bargain.

Reception
Generator hostel has been great, I felt very well received. A special shoutout to Blen who was impeccable: knowledgeable, helpful and always had the best attitude.

Rooms
There are private rooms or shared rooms available. The rooms get cleaned every day, there are showers and bathrooms in every room and on every floor. Shared dorms are petite but have all your basics covered.

Food & Drink
There is a breakfast offering that is decently priced if you need to eat something quickly before heading out. The bar has a good selection of cocktails for good prices if you're looking to chill in-house for the night. Zé is a super friendly bartender, say hi for me if you see him.

Events:
Thus-Sat there are DJs spinning at the bar and on Saturdays the restaurant space hosts a series of pop up shops.

Conclusion
If you're looking for a place to land while you explore the city, this can definitely be a place for you. It was super easy for me to walk around Barcelona and then touch base back at Generator. People we friendly, the spaces were clean and if you're on a budget it's hard to find a better spot.

I would not recommend staying at The Generator if you value comfortability/sleep quality and cleanliness. The 6 dorm female bedrooms have little to no space in them; it was a squeeze getting past other people. I did not sleep well at all; I kept waking up in the middle of the night because I was awoken by this terrible smell that was coming from the dorm (en-suite) bathroom. It smelt of urine and sewage. I could not spend another night there. Sadly for me I had paid for 3 nights and was not offered a refund. It’s not really that social either - if you are looking for a place to mingle and meet people; I wouldn’t recommend. I’m glad I left on the first night because I would have been miserable for the whole time. Two members of staff were friendly and one of the staff me members just didn’t seem approachable at all.

I have always been opposed to staying in hostels. I'm too much of a room & board snob. I mean, who wants to share a bedroom space with a bunch of strangers?

But prices in Barcelona on the main Saturday of Circuit Festival were ludicrous (literal 400% to 900% markups), so I was forced to stay at a hostel for the first time, as it was not just the cheapest option but the *only* cheap option in BCN.

Thanks to Generator, I now see why hostels are a popular option for budget travelers. Generator has a nice, welcoming vibe from staff to other travelers. It's a party vibe downstairs, but the rooms are quiet. Beds weren't too uncomfortable and the underbed lockers (which took a while to figure out, operationally) were big enough to hold both my roller carry on and my large duffle bag. My 6-bed shared room felt secure, and shared hower/toilet was available in-room, as well as in common areas. Useful in case one of your roommates is taking too long.

The downsides are just the downsides of any shared room hostel: no privacy, disrupted sleep because folks are coming and going at all hours, awkward interactions with strange faces.

But my roommates were mostly cool. Breakfast was okay and could use hot options, but for the cheap price it was good. Bar I found to be overpriced, but the bar at Generator was popping with young travelers at night (I did not go, as I was going to the Circuit Festival main party as previously mentioned).

Generator didn't make me a hostel convert; I still prefer nicer hotels. But if you're on an extremely low budget, or just looking for a one-night crash pad, or are in your teens or 20s and looking for a lively dormlike scene where you can meet people, Generator was a very nice hostel.

This was the cheapest option when we went to Barcelona so we weren't expecting much. It's actually pretty good. It's more of a budget hotel than a hostel, you'd see people from different age groups. During breakfast you'd see old people as well as children. So if you're looking for a party hostel this isn't the place. There's a bar downstairs though and it's quite easy to meet people there if you're traveling alone. The area is great too, close to the metro station and a number of attractions. lots of places to eat nearby. there's a mini mart just across the street.

Facilities were great, rooms were kept clean. Wifi was good. The buffet breakfast was pretty good too and i'd say it's fairly priced. There are washers and dryers in the basement if you need to do your laundry, you just need coins to operate em. If you don't have coins you could easily get some at the reception. Which brings me to the only complaint i'm going to make. At night there's frequently a long line at the reception. The hostel needs to hire more people to man the reception at night.

It may have been my mistake to stay in a chain hostel, but Generator Barcelona is probably the worst luxury hostel I have stayed in. I have stayed at their location in Berlin, which was much nicer, so I didn't expect such a poor experience in Barcelona. The staff are very rude and unhelpful. They are not allowed to provide blankets/duvets in summer, despite the rooms being very cold and the AC being unadjustable. They however do not tell you this, but just keep saying "sorry we don't have blankets" when you ask. We also asked about a 24 hour pharmacy and the staff told us to look on the internet. There are no events organised to facilitate people meeting eachother and the vibe in the hostel is dead. The beds are comfortable and the rooms get cleaned everyday. The rooms are however very cramped. The bathroom in room 318 only has a shower built for those with disabilities, which is great, but the shower head sits at hip height, cannot be adjusted and there is no glass/door/curtain, so water flows over the entire bathroom. The situation was rlthe same at the Generator hostel in Berlin, but they provided a squeegee to clean the floor at least. The shared bathrooms on each floor are very cramped. The kitchen area has no facilities, just tables, fridges and microwaves - no kettles or stoves, making it difficult to prepare one's own food. The location is fine, but I would presonally recommend staying in the gothic quarter of Barcelona. There is a bus stop 2 mins away and a metro station 7 mins walk away. They have a rooftop area/bar, but it closes at 10pm which feels a bit pointless.

It doesn't matter just book a shared mixed room. They are not gonna ask for your relationsship status. Do take note that your gonna be in a room with other people so you don't have that much privacy.

In the dorm rooms there is a lockable space under the beds for luggage. You’ll need your own padlock to secure it. Big enough for an average sized suitcase, we could fit in two carry-on suitcases. There are also lockers near reception to store luggage, but I’d only advise using them for a short time as you pay for them. I hope this helps
