Detailed Reviews
We enjoyed another return visit to the Botanicó, this time for nine nights. The hotel is a calm and elegant oasis at the edge of downtown Puerto de la Cruz and close to its famous Botanical Garden, established in the 18c. The hotel continues the botanical theme with its beautiful garden whose Asian ambience is continued in the décor of the spacious public areas. The luxurious spa is on a grand scale and has many options.
There are several bus services close by and taxis to downtown (or elsewhere) are inexpensive. The hotel also offers a (somewhat limited) shuttle service to the city centre.
Our ‘double de luxe’ fourth floor room and bathroom were adequately sized but the general ambience was more four star than five star and reflected the hotel’s mid 20c construction. And the floor of the walk-in shower in the ‘renovated’ bathroom was only c. 1 sq m and would have been a challenge to anyone over 175 cm in height.
Breakfast is a sumptuous buffet with attentive staff (and the best croissants we can recall). There are three elegant restaurants and we enjoyed several dinners in two of them (the other is designed to assist guests on a slimming programme).
WiFi was free and easy to use but rather slow. All the staff we met were helpful and friendly.
While expensive by local standards, we thought the Botanicó generally good value – but some offerings are seriously overpriced e.g. the laundry service and private airport transfers.
The clientele is mainly 50 + in age (we did not see a single child!) and the atmosphere is correspondingly sedate and quiet.
Staying in the Botanicó is a relaxing and pleasant experience, close to five star in most respect and it’s also a good base for touring the interesting historic towns of northern Tenerife. Recommended subject to the comments above.

Having not been here for some years following other travel commitments and then covid I was excited to return though was unsure what to expect from the renovations. These are an improvement and they have given the hotel a cleaner, fresher and more modern look. The new sunbeds by the main pool are (if too few) the single biggest improvement and before families arrived with children it was very relaxing. The pool boys were also very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. When children were there it was less enjoyable so next time I will make sure I book for a time when no children are there at all.
The breakfast is generally good and despite the omelette chef being very busy all the time he still managed to boil my eggs to perfection each day and the whole time the staff were under pressure but they were always very friendly and attentive. The fresh fruit, bread and pastries were as good as ever. I did miss the newspaper at breakfast and while I see the amount of paper used for that a waste it would have been no bad thing if an alternative via QR code were provided.
The bar is well stocked and the cocktails are very good with reasonable prices and the service (esepcially Carmen) is attentive. Some of the bands are also good and the new look is a vast improvement.
The spa is as it ever was with the only complaints being the temperature of the pool which doesn´t really have a cooling effect and the lack of sunbeds especially when people are almost encouraged by some rude girl working there to reserve them. Generally I think the staff in the spa have a dismissive, rude attitude not found in the rest of the hotel. I also don´t really see why towels in the spa need to be wrapped in plastic while by the pool theyre handed out normally.
This hotel does take covid seriously and in many ways far too seriously! Expecting their staff to work all day in that heat and even outside in an FFP2 masks seems unnecessary and could even be dangerous. Mask wearing outside with those levels of UV light is completely unnecessary and people should not do it. There is also little less inviting than to arrive with the phone and hairdryer covered in shower caps. I do hope that by the time I return much of this security theatre will disappear.
The staff here are (apart from in the spa) worth a mention in their own right. They are so very kind and always show a strong interest in improving the guests´stay in any way they can. Antonio and Suso are both very good porters and are always over the years have been extremely helpful, Tina at reception has a constant smile on her face and is really very motivated to help her guests and Carmen in the bar also does a great job. I was delighted that while there have been many changes at the Botanico that the kind staff with their professional yet personable manner as good as ever.
There are one or two areas where I get the feeling the hotel needs to get back into its stride after being closed for so long and I will definitely book outside the school holidays to avoid children completely. Other than that I am already looking forward to my next relaxing break.

Dear Mr James W. We are very grateful for all the comments you have made and we are pleased to know that you have enjoyed a pleasant stay with us. Indeed, we have recently carried out a major refurbishment of the hotel facilities to update them, as well as modernising an important part of the furnishings, which is being, as in your case, very positively valued by all our guests. We want to continue to be a benchmark in luxury accommodation. In addition to our facilities, we want to distinguish ourselves for the services and attention we provide to our clients, so that they can feel at home. That's why we are pleased to know that both our breakfast buffet and our Bar Hall have been to your complete satisfaction. We take good note of your comments on some aspects that have not been to your liking. In any case, we ask that the next time you visit us, please let us know all your comments and suggestions during your stay, so that we can give immediate and satisfactory solution to everything you ask us. Unfortunately, due to the current situation, the regulations oblige us to take certain health measures and to use protocols that affect all the services we offer. Our priority, of course, is the health of our customers and our employees. We believe that such measures contribute to this. In any case, we are convinced that the situation will soon return to normal. Thank you for your words of appreciation to the hotel staff. It is undoubtedly the greatest satisfaction for all of us to see that our guests are satisfied with the services and attentions provided. We reiterate our thanks for all your comments and we are sure that we will have you back with us very soon. We would be delighted to welcome you back to our home.

Our room (Double Deluxe Ocean View 437) was very comfortable – excellent bed – the spacious bathroom had two basins, a bath and a separate shower cubicle – the balcony was pleasantly cool and shady up until about 5pm after which it got the evening sun. On request, we had a kettle with teas, instant coffees, cups etc. We were also kindly given a Nespresso machine and coffee pods – I think these are normally for more expensive rooms but as the hotel was nowhere near full, they offered us the opportunity to have one.
Breakfast was a fairly wide buffet plus an egg station, making, amongst other things, excellent omelettes and crepes. There was certainly enough variety to ring the changes in a 10 night stay.
The hotel restaurants have expensive evening menus but there are several nice places within 5 minutes walk plus plenty of choice in the town centre – a 20 minutes downhill walk or there is a regular hotel shuttle bus with the last one down at 18.40.
The main swimming pool is long enough to swim lengths and is well heated. There were always towels, sunbeds and parasols available and a cheerful member of staff on hand to assist since the parasols were quite unwieldy to put up or to move.
There are two tennis courts, of which one has a decent surface (some sort of all weather carpet). And two ping pong tables although one of them is warped with a broken net. In practice, there was little demand and we found that we and the friends with whom we had travelled were able to use the good tennis court and the good ping pong table whenever we chose. As we were just playing socially for a bit of fun, we borrowed the hotel’s tennis racquets and ping pong bats. If you are a serious competitor, you would want to bring your own racquet and bat.
There is also a putting green with 18 holes which is lovingly maintained. Using it costs 15 Euros per person so we did so only once.
The Spa has a small indoor pool and a small outdoor pool plus a few different saunas and steam rooms. There is also a gym with the usual equipment – on the three occasions on which I used the gym, I was the only person there.
The staff were, without exception, charming and friendly and they all seemed genuinely keen to help. My wife was unlucky enough to spend three days in hospital in Puerto de la Cruz – special mention has to go to Santiago, the restaurants manager, and his catering team for their exceptional support, going to the trouble of making specific items to enable my wife to follow the restricted diet given to her by the hospital on discharge. And many thanks to Susana in Guest Relations for her concern and for the fabulous roses.
If you are looking for a quiet and comfortable hotel in or around Puerto de la Cruz, I would imagine that the Botanico is hard to beat.

If you want USB ports by your bed, minimalist furniture, LED lights in your bath and robotic staff... this is not the hotel for you.
If you want a very comfortable room, staff who really care, lush surroundings and the best spa in the world, then I urge you to pay a visit.
We were last there around ten years ago and we were a tiny bit worried that, somehow, it would have 'gone off'... but we needn't have worried. The welcome was so warm, the staff so attentive, the breakfast so fabulous and the spa so unbelievably perfect.
Special mentions to Celeste, Jesus, Marta, Monserrat to name but a few.
Turn up, chill out, turn off your phone and let them look after you. You won't regret it.

The hotel claims to be a leading hotel of the world. I have stayed at plenty of these hotels and this hotel definitely does not fall within this category.
It may well be a leading hotel of Tenerife and it is certainly expensive.
It is a throw back in time. We had an Ambassador Suite, a large room from the 1980's with red carpet and drapes, cream sofas, and large dressing area and bathroom. However, whilst it is comfortable it is tired and updates have been done as cheap add-ons.
As an example the marble shower floor has been taken out and replaced with a cheap white plastic and very flexible shower tray. I addition, there is a hand shower on a runner which is worse than the shower I have at home for my dogs, Definitely not 5 star let alone leading the world in elegance and quality.
We did look at another room which was apparently an upgrade which had a rainfall shower with body jets but the room itself was dark and dingy and clearly was not an upgrade on what we had and we decided to make do with a terrible shower.
There are 2 pools, one being adults only at the spa which is where we sat every day. The pool is lovely but did not appear to have its bottom cleaned at all during our 8 day stay leading to a build up of dirt.
Additionally, and for some inexplicable reason although the pool area is full of adults every day there is no bar and no pool service meaning that drinks and food need to be taken at the main pool area which is some distance away. I would call this a missed business opportunity but others might think this is simply short sighted.
We did see one couple who had ordered room service drinks be told that they could not consume them at the spa pool area.
A further example is the evening meal whereby a buffet is offered as well as one of the restaurants - either Italian or Oriental.
The Italian is Ok - we ate there 3 times but despite being 5 star prices we were never that impressed. However, the ambience on the terrace is nice. The Italian on the main road at the hotel entrance is far superior and half the price but the ambience is not so good.
The menu for the Oriental did not really appeal to us.
There is a lovely poolside terrace restaurant offering a la carte lunch which would be a much better dinner setting and offering especially if like us you do not do buffets.
The spa is nice although my wife had a Lomi Lomi massage which they insisted was carried out on plastic sheeting and which she did not enjoy at all. The spa manager did offer a further treatment which was much better.
Room service appeared non existent after waiting an hour for some hot water and cold milk for tea. The bar staff were very accommodating is providing pots of hot water. However, you do not expect to have to do self service in a leading hotel of the world and a small kettle in the room would be expected alongside the coffee machine.
Overall it was comfortable and a well needed rest after 20 months of not being abroad but needs some thought and improvement if it is to compete with other more modern offerings.

Dear Stephen K, We would like to thank you for choosing the Botanico Hotel for your stay while in Tenerife. We are most thankful for constructive reviews as they allow us to enhance our understanding of our guests' needs and expectations. At the same, I would like to point out a few things: SPA area is not allowed for sanitary reasons to serve food or drinks, is a temple of relax and we consider the tranquility of our guests, to order drinks there are other places in our property. At the same time, your room bathroom was completely refurbished with italian marble and no plastic, but we understand it was not to your liking. We will make our best effort to help all our guests have a wonderful experience. Thank you for your patiente, we hope to see you back here soon. Kind regards, Gustavo Escobar General Manager

After a stressful end to 2021 I booked last minute to go to the Botanico for the first few weeks of January 2022, seeking a complete escape and reboot for the new year. The place far exceeded my expectations and was the perfect respite. My room was garden facing, so every day I got to look down at the beautiful gardens which are even more spectacular at night. From the moment I arrived to the moment I left the staff were amazingly attentive and couldn't do enough for me. During my stay I ate at all the restaurants (apart from The Slim), joined a yoga session and got two massages in the spa. All I can say is - wow! The yoga session moved outside at our request so we wouldn't need to keep the masks on because of covid rules and the instructor was wonderful. The massages were excellent, with the second being the longest version of the aromatic massage - it covers the whole body and it is well worth the cost. And the food was delicious. My favourite was The Oriental, with one of the best red curry's I've ever had. My only tiny disappointment was that due to the low number of guests in my second week they closed all the restaurants apart from the Italian, but they made up for it by offering a small menu selection from the other restaurants in case you didn't want to eat Italian every night!
Overall I was blown away by the friendliness and attention of the staff and the quality of the service provided. I would definitely go again and as a solo female traveller it was an especially wonderful experience as it felt really safe and not awkward at all (which can be the case in some places when you dine and drink alone!). I came home completely relaxed and only hope the experience I had there continues in my life for the rest of the year! I will be back!

A wonderful hotel everything you would expect for its 5 stars. I mentioned to the concierge that I found the mattress too hard and pillow not supportive enough and immediately she phoned housekeeping and by the time we returned to our room they had put a memory foam mattress and pillow in situ and from then on I slept like a lamb.
We had interconnecting rooms as our adult daughter who has a learning was with us which made our stay perfect.
The pools are kept at a lovely temperature and the loungers are very comfortable. The Oriental Spa Restaurant is amazing and all food at the hotel of a good standard. The staff are lovely and the location perfect although there is a courtesy bus into the town its easily walkable with many cafes and independent shops to browse.
We hired a car which allowed us to explore the island although excursions are bookable from reception as was the hire car which was delivered and collected from the hotel.

Room Tip: We were pool facing which was lovely but I think you would be happy anywhere in the hotel.

This hotel is consistently good with excellent friendly and helpful staff.
This is the only hotel we would stay in whilst in Puerto de la Cruz.
It’s situated in the up and coming area of la Paz. There are excellent restaurants within walking distance.
Mario on the breakfast station serves perfectly cooked eggs and always with a smile.
The facilities are excellent. The pool area is very well run, the pool attendants are constantly cleaning the sun beds and surrounding area.
The Spa pool is adult only , so is very peaceful, but in need of a tidy up of the area surrounding the pool.
The gardens are beautiful and well tended.
We can’t wait to return.

+1
Amazing hotel from the massages in the spa, to lazy days around the pool. The staff go above and beyond, knowing everyone by name. The pool lifeguard worked so hard cleaning the pool daily as well as around the pool and always on hand to help with umbrellas to extra towels. The rooms are gorgeous and beautifully clean, this is done daily, with water being replenished and a chocolate on your bed when turned down at night. We always have adjoining rooms. Amazing for children of all ages, with a kids club catering up to 14. They take them on trips to the lorro park, play games with them and even have a selection of PS4’s and Xbox’s 😂. Activities are also undertaken in the beautiful botanical gardens and even cookie making in one of the kitchen’s before heading for a bit of crazy golf. Oriental restaurant amazing, with plenty of other eating opportunities just across the road or take a trip into town on the free shuttle bus or taxi. I can’t speak highly enough from friendliness to cleanliness and things to do.
You will not regret it, our 8th year in a row and already booked for next year…… Well done again Botanico!!!!!!

Puerto de la Cruz, Spain22 contributions1 helpful voteWe have a seating area in the garden area to enjoy drinks with waiter service
Shuttle is not available during siesta time or on Sunday
Although I have been to the hotel often, I have only ever had non private once and it was a people carrier and it went directly to the hotel/airport with no other stops so was pretty much the same timing as the private transfer.
