Catalonia Donosti is celebrated for its enviable location, allowing guests to easily explore the beach and nearby shopping areas, while the stylish decor and luxurious atmosphere are a hit among visitors seeking a lavish retreat. However, the perception of value is marred by the high costs for breakfast and spa services, with some guests feeling shortchanged. Service quality receives mixed reviews, ranging from professional to inattentive. Moreover, despite the allure of amenities like the rooftop pool, the execution sometimes falls short of expectations. Rooms are generally spacious and clean, yet noise can be an issue, and room service might disappoint.

We stayed in the Catalonia Donosti for 4 days 3 nights 14th March to 18th.
It was a wonderful experience. The staff were amazing, Sara , Sylvia and other amazing ladies at the reception. They made us feel very welcome. The cleanliness of the hotel is exceptional, we had our dog with us, he is small but cute , but the facilities in the hotel made it so simple and easy to bring your dog from room to reception where there are walkways to an elevator which bring you down
( very fast, quiet clean elevators) to street level where you turn left for a walk on a wonderful beach which us not accessible to dogs from May to September.
There was a charge of 20 euro for dog, not a big deal and a charge of 20 euro per day for a very nice safe carpark.
Room was spacious, not overly big , king sized great bed, good quality bed linen, a very good coffee maker, amazing bathroom with a beautiful walk in sparkling clean shower.
We could see the sea from our room. We slept very well.
The elevator from our floor to lobby was super efficient, the dining room was beautiful , the bar was very cosmopolitan, great service, great cocktails, we especially loved Asair the manager in the bar and restaurant, he served us dinner one of the nights, did his utmost to make our meal special.
We looked forward to breakfast every morning because the food was exceptional. The buffet was one of the best
We have ever seen. Unbelievable quality and amazing selection. Loved everything.
Thank you all again for your lovely letter wishing my husband a happy birthday. We will be back for those drinks. Great staff, great hotel, great location and our dog loved his holiday as well.

Dear guest: Thank you very much for your good rating and for having selected us among the many good hotels in the city. We are very happy to read about Sara, Silvia and Asier, I think it is the best we can find in a comment on this social network. The staff work hard and it is very gratifying to read that they are doing their job well. We also like to read that the breakfasts are especially good as it is one of our strong points and we put a lot of interest in making sure that everything goes very well. In any case we look forward to hosting you again if you decide to return to the city, we are sure you will not regret it. Best regards. Hotel Manager

Nice place to discover SAN Sebastián. Nice hotel. Close to the center
The breakfast and restaurant are of high quality The price of the hotel room and breakfast is on the high side but we enjoyed it very much
The room is spacious and tastefully decorated. The bed is perfect. When checking in we had to wait a long time because our room was not ready until 15:45. Also the cleaning the next day of the room very late 6 pm.
We were given a room that was also accessible for the disabled. The brackets and the like in the bathroom were not very convenient for us.

PROS: We were upgraded to a suite, which was perfect for a busy toddler to move around and be able to eat at a table. The staff was very nice and accomodating. Especially the man at the front desk and woman from room service (Sorry I dont know your names!)
The pool is small with limited seating, but amazing views of the city.
This hotel is in the most perfect location. Close to everything! At the most 15 min walking to wherever we wanted to go. A very comfortable bed. Nice toiletries. Overall a beautiful hotel.

CONS: This hotel is brand new. Opened a few weeks prior to our 4-night stay and you can see/feel this. There are still construction managers and workers here and there, installing and working on things. There is construction dust on the floors and walls. Many amenities are not available, such as spa treatments like massages. Inside the room, there are cracks in the floor where the tiles weren't lined up properly or pink glue seeping out from the door frame.
B/c of COVID measures, you must book the pool ahead of time for only 1 hour, with a max of 6 people. This rule was broken at times, as there were 25 people at the pool when I was there. Many times, there were no pool towels. No pool bar.
The front of the property is not finished and likely won't be done for a while, so the convenience of an elevator to take you up and down to and from the town is not there. You must walk down two long steep streets, passing by active construction of apartment buildings. This wasn't the safest with a stroller no sidewalk, trash and materials scattered across the streets.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel because of fair price, location, and room. But if you are looking for a more established hotel with working amenities, and no fuss, then maybe check this hotel out in 6-12 months.

Dear Customer: Thank you very much for your review and positive review. Unfortunately there are people who do not comply with the rules and that day there were people who did not reserve the pool space and sneaked into it. At the moment because we have been open for more days, we have control of the situation. The works outside the building progress quickly and the ones inside are already finished so to this day I am sure that you would already enjoy the stay much more. We have opened an elevator that leaves guests just 100m from the cathedral and 200m from the beach, so we look forward to seeing you again in our hotel. Receive a cordial greeting. Hotel manager

From the photos and description it looks beautiful
The access road is still a building site and by chance we realised we were even there and a builder opened a barrier and stopped the traffic to let us in the road up to the hotel as its blocked off. Maybe we missed the sign saying we were there?
There was no mention of the building site when booking.
The check in covid cleaning procedures was not as thorough as at some hotels we have experienced. We were offered a machine and told to sign with our finger, we were not aware of the screen of the machine being wiped?
We went up to the pool the next morning (to look at view) a dirty glass (no bar facility on roof) was still there from night before so area had not been cleaned, despite it being open.
Becareful when you get out of bed, the bedside lamps hang from the ceiling and are easy to bump your head on.
The shower water did not have good pressure and temperature varied.
The lift down to the street, is very good idea, but the corridor access is quite dark and I felt unsafe walking along it. is there CCTV? It is also not that clear how to even find it and gain access.
There is also scaffolding round the door of the street entrance.
Excellent facilities in room, beautifully decorated, very well stocked mini bar but no price guide available,
The hotel is beautifully decorated, spacious and bright.
Good location.

Dear guest, Thank you for your review and rating on this social network. We appreciate you showing us the negative points of your stay in order to improve. The street works are almost finished and the hotel is well soundproof although I understand that we would be better off without them. The reception ipad is cleaned every time the customer uses it and we try to clean the entire hotel with the greatest care. As you comment we have no pool bar service and the dirty glass incident seems strange to me because every morning before opening there is cleaning service. In any case we would love to try to improve your experience if you decide to return to our city. Receive a cordial greeting. Hotel manager.

Modern clean and well managed. Staff friendly and helpful. It is often the little things that mar a hotel experience but here the detail was thought out and managed well. Hot showers without steaming up the mirrors, a makeup mirror you can access even if you are short, lighting in the wardrobes, plenty of hangers, toiletries replenished and so on and on. Only criticism is that the double bed was standard size when there was plenty of room for a king size. Did not use restaurant or gym/spa/pool

Visiting San Sebastián for the first time, we chose to stay at Hotel Catalonia Donostia. Our stay from start to finish was superb! At Check in the room was available early on arrival which was a pleasant surprise after a 3am start from the UK. The hotel is excellent I travel frequently and this is easily 5 stars! The staff were welcoming and friendly and assisted with many things including dinner reservations (no mean feat due to various food intolerances) the rooftop bar, pool and terrace has amazing views of La Concha Beach, a nice cocktail while the sun is going down is a must. The location is great in a quiet hilltop area and only a 5 minute easy walk to the beach and it is surrounded by local bars and restaurants. Breakfast is well worth the additional 19 euros per person. It is plentiful and lots of options. The pancakes are delicious. The hotel is very clean, food and service are excellent. The spa is an additional cost which could be made clearer on the website (the only downside) amongst an abundance of excellence!!!! Stay here you won’t regret it!!

We had a fantastic time at the Catalonia Donosti. The parts of the hotel that we experienced seemed to have been recently renovated and were stunning. There were beautiful tiles in the spacious lobby and our room was lovely: well appointed and current in style. The shower was large and the hand held devise was particularly powerful. The dining room/ bar is lovely though the views are impeded by the building site next door, mentioned by other reviewers. The breakfast buffet was excellent providing a wide range of food to meet the needs of most tastes. However, the space did work better as a dining room than a bar as it was a bit large and often empty in the evenings, so lacked atmosphere. The staff were a bit half hearted in the bar too. On one occasion we arrived at about 21.45 and asked for an Aperol Spritz, The person on duty said he was out of prosecco and pointed to an empty bottle. I find it hard to believe there was none at all in the hotel but he was reluctant to do what needed to be done to acquire it. I have to ask the question. "What sort of bar runs out of prosecco?" anyway!
The passageway which runs from the hotel to the street below avoiding a steep hill is a brilliant idea and was well decorated and very clean. In the 6 days we stayed here there was no hint of a sewage smell as mentioned by another reviewer, in fact I actually commented on the pleasant perfume on one occasion.
The pool and bar area on the roof is a gorgeous space with beautiful views in all directions. It's quite small but on most days we managed to find a table and chairs when we wanted one There did seem to be an issue with the bar which was not always staffed and did run out of glasses and certain drinks on a regular basis resulting in lengthy waits. Similarly there was sometimes a person issuing towels and sometimes not.
All in all, we loved this hotel and had a fabulous time in San Sebastian.

I am not one for reviews but I do think exceptional service deserves to be called out as there is not enough of it.
I booked this hotel many months ago & in light of some of the Covid challenges our flights have been cancelled repeatedly.
Following on from the latest cancellation we decided to drive to Spain.
Of course this has meant we lost some days given a longer journey.
The hotel could have used their prevailing rates, which could have cost us up to €600 more.
Instead they opted to just move the booking back.
The provider I booked with (Hotels.com) was significantly less helpful than the hotel itself, which is also interesting as I don’t think they deserve the commission the hotel will pay them but instead the hotel most certainly does.
Thank you for being so accommodating & understanding.

My stay at Catalonia Donosti was excellent. It was characterised by service-minded staff (both in the restaurant, reception and spa), modern hotel and interior, while the cleanliness of rooms and hotel as a whole was high.

Being off-season in November, I would nevertheless, consider the price for accommodation low compared to the service, room and extra facilities that were available to us (e.g. spa, fitness, lift to downtown and more). A minor negative detail is the relatively high prices for (the great) breakfast, though easily solved by eating in the city.

A nice hotel on the surface, but not worth the amount of money we paid. We stayed for 3 nights at the beginning of September 2023.

The location is good, and the lift/access to the main road is very helpful. It is only then about 10 minutes straight down the road to the town area.

A few things could be improved to make the hotel feel more “lux” and 4-star:

1. Check in is at 15.00. We arrived early, dropped our bags off with reception and came back at 17.00. The room still wasn’t ready and it had to be signed off by a supervisor before we could go in, so we had a wait an additional 20 minutes in reception with constant checking. Not ideal after travelling all day and purposely coming back to the hotel late.

2. Breakfast wasn’t included and if you did want to add it on, it’s about 19€ pp. we decided against it and chose to have a coffee and pastry down the road for 4€. Everything from the breakfast to the spa treatments felt very overly priced and I’d recommend saving your money.

3. Yes, they do have a spa. But you’ll need to pay 20€ to use their cold jacuzzi, cold plunge pool, steam and sauna room. Oh, and you need to book in advance for a one-hour slot. If you have a treatment, one hour is included.

4. Our room wasn’t cleaned until around 17.00 each day. By which we had been out all day, and as we’re back in the room relaxing and getting ready for dinner, the cleaner would knock. Again, a small touch, it would be better if this could be organised earlier on in the day when people are most likely to be out.

5. We checked out at 12.00 but our flight wasn’t until 20.00 in the evening. We went out for the day and asked if we could relax by the rooftop bar for the last hour or so before heading to the airport. We went upstairs, ordered some basic drinks (a water and can of sangria), only to be told we couldn’t pay for them as we didn’t have a room, and we had to go back down to the ground floor to pay at the main restaurant. We asked for a third drink (a beer) and the waitress refused to serve us. The hotel made some things so much more difficult than it needed to be. It took away from the experience, and their hospitality basics need to be improved. For a four-star hotel, they really treat you like it’s a B&B at times.

A nice hotel on the surface, but I wouldn’t pay the amount of money we did and stay there again.
