I booked the hotel restaurant for dinner. The appetizer, Farmer’s platter, was a ham and cheese platter platter, and it seemed like a lot, so I asked if I could share it, and he prepared a small plate. The roasted piglet, a local dish, was hearty and the meat was tender and very delicious. Breakfast was a buffet, and the only hot meals were bacon and scrambled eggs, but there were many cold meals, including ham and cheese.
The staff were friendly and the hostess took care of everything and made me feel comfortable.

Breakfast OK. Nice little terrace in the middle to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning or a beer in the evening.
Staff speak good English. Except for the night manager. He spoke no English but we managed to understand each other anyway 😄
No take-away cups for coffee which a bit disappointing as I enjoy walking my dog in the early hours with a cup in my hand. And oh. The woman from the reception locked herself into our room one afternoon without knocking first. We could never figure out why, as she saw us and ran off and then we never saw her again but.. that was strange.
But other than that a nice stay and hotel 😄
The staff was welcoming and kind. Very friendly and understanding and dog friendly!
Breakfast was very good, as was dinner in the restaurant.
Holidays in the time of COVID are strange, but we felt very safe here. There was lots of room in the dining areas and everyone was compliant with social distancing guidelines and masking.

What we found here vastly exceeded our expectations. The “family suite” was large, with four twin beds, all very comfortable. The bath was good size and with new fixtures. The location was also great—a mere block from St. Jakob’s Church (which houses Tilman Riemenschneider’s greatest work) and the central Rathaus square. Parking is a tad inconvenient, but you will not likely use your car while in Rothenberg.
The included breakfast was first-rate in the robust and bountiful German style—including eggs, bacon, cold meats, breads, Danishes, cereals, yogurts, varied cheeses and juices. It was all quite spectacular. Along with the very moderate pricing for the room, it made this hotel one of the most satisfactory of our two week German itinerary.
There are many fine hotels in Rothenberg. But know this: you cannot go wrong with a stay here. This is not a luxury hotel, but it is a superb value. In every respect, the room and common areas met our needs and exceeded my expectations. It warrants a high recommendation—one I shall carve in stone rather than the great master’s preferred substrate.
We were enamoured with the walled city. It's such a contrast from outside, which is quite industrial a few miles away, and then, closer to the city, quite plain. The walled city is like a giant dolls house without being too twee, since it's not contrived, it has always been as it is, apparently, so it is really quite something to see. You probably only need to spend a day here, strolling around the cobbles, eating the strange snowball confections that are available on almost every street in the centre (Schneeballes - something like that - fried dough filled with various flavoured creams, sort of like a doughnut. Should be tried. Once.) and exploring the towers and museums. Once you have been to all four corners of the city and read all the history, it's probably time to move on. We didn't have time to do sightseeing outside of the city in Rothenburg, so I can't comment on that aspect. There is a massive Christmas museum and shop which, if you like that kind of thing (in the middle of summer!) could easy use up a few hours. It's an enormous place - the sheer scale of it is daunting - with every kind of Christmas trinket (baubles, place settings, advent calendars, tree decorations, and so on) you could possibly imagine. I though it was absolutely ghastly and creepy, but very fascinating. There are also a couple of teddy bear shops for the children to wander through and try to fleece their parents. Be warned: it is a very touristy place and we occasionally found ourselves caught up in large groups being led by a man with a large sunflower! Wander around the back streets a little bit to get out of the crowds - there are some smaller, cheaper restaurants off the beaten track.
There are many hotels within the walls and quite a few were advertising availability. They all look very nice. The Tilman Riemenschneider was good for our needs. The family room was split into two (so we could be a little bit separate from the children. It was extremely hot and there was no air conditioning but they gave us a portable fan which was fine. The room was very well equipped and the staff friendly and not at all intrusive. Breakfast was nothing special - pretty much what you'd expect. It was, like everything in the area, quite expensive though at euro 410 for two nights plus the parking. I would recommend the hotel as having no downsides that I can think of, but I would suggest you only need one night in Rothenburg walled city. Also, don't be tempted to buy silly trinkets which would cost you less in Central London!
