The location is great-just outside the old medieval city of Rothenburg ob den Tauber. This make sit super-easy to use it as a base to explore the surrounds.
The hotel is a mix of 3 and 4 star rooms, which can be quite different. Even in the 4-star wing, they have (standard) superior rooms (an oxymoron if there was one) and what looked like an upgraded variety (plusher, with more modern furnishings).
We stayed in a (standard) superior room: fairly large, clean, well maintained. The toliets were good (finally an exhaust in a European hotel that audibly starts working as soon as the light is switched on!). The beds were a bit soft for our liking, but I believe they are the same in all room types. The air conditioning (split air conditioners in every room) worked a little too well.
The Reception staff are multi-lingual and very helpful.
The breakfast was impressive, in a huge, modern room with a full German spread and prompt replenishments with typical German efficiency. The full gamut of breads, teas, hams and a hot section with Nuremberg sausages, pancakes and the like. There was a live counter for eggs too, but the lady at the counter looked very, very uninterested in making them; a little friendliness-training wouldn't be out of place, as she was almost shouted at by a few German guests).
The hotel has a couple of local restaurants in the premises, which serve steaks and typical Franconian cuisine - all excellent quality, with very friendly serving staff. The local beer was good but not chilled enough. The pork shank (a local special the way it is made) was one of the best we'd tasted in Germany. Surprisingly, even the fish was good. A few chicken dishes may have helped. There were options for children too, and lots of flexibility.
Parking's free behind the hotel (their private area shared with a few neighbours), plenty of space.
A mid-size shopping mall is a 6 minute easy walk-this houses a huge Kaufland department store.
The hotel is located just next to the Gallows Gate, one of the 6 gates to the city. It was a pleasure climbing the city walls so easily and walking back from the old city.
Overall a lovely experience-we wouldn't look anywhere else to stay when we're back next.

The hotel is located about three and a half kilometers from the A7 motorway, right outside the gate to the old town, within walking distance of the city center. Our room had a large TV, comfortable beds, individually adjustable lighting in the room, a night light in the spacious bathroom and a coffee machine. The drinks in the minibar are free, as is the parking. The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff deserves special mention. Both the room and the breakfast room were spotlessly clean. The breakfast was plentiful and delicious, and the hotel's own restaurant was typically Franconian.

Hotel Rappen is a great base for visiting Rothenburg o.d.T.. Booked through Booking exceeded our expectations. It is located just a few meters from one of the entrance gates of the city, near the P4 parking lot (public for a fee) where there is also a nice playground for children. There is also free parking behind the hotel, all directions are provided by the staff at reception. Very elegant hotel entrance. Huge room, as big as an apartment, as well as the bathroom, very large and new. We had a family quadruple and had a great time. Very quiet room, very comfortable beds. Breakfast really very plentiful with variety of sweet and savory food. The hotel also has a restaurant/brewery but we didn't eat there.
We can only recommend it!

The location is excellent. The hotel is located just next to the old city wall and is a great starting point for a walk through the old town. Rothenburg is really lovely and a walk on the city wall is a nice experience. The hotel looks very nice from the outside. Parking behind the hotel is good and there’s 4 EV charging points (3 reserved for Tesla’s) We were lucky to be able to charge over night. The charging rate is 4.3kw at a flat rate of 10€. The receptionist we encountered felt that she needed to point out that in reality we were not allow the have a dog in the room category we hade booked, but she would allow it this time. As we had specifically searched for a hotel that allows dogs and booked it via booking.com, received 2 emails from the hotel that among others pointed out that dogs were allowed at a cost of 20€ per night we found that odd. No further information was provided what was behind the” normally not allowed” statement, but left us feeling like we had done something wrong or were trying to scam the hotel. The rest of the staff we met was very friendly and service minded. The room, 103, was OK. Big, and hardly decorated so it felt a little cold and not really welcoming. The bed was good and on the firm side. The bathroom was newly decorated with a bathtub. The breakfast was OK, but the scrambled eggs and bacon of the type were you wonder were we have come too that hotels think offering this kind of processed “out of the can” quality just to have it on the menu, is OK. The rest of the breakfast was fine. We will be checking out another hotel when in Rothenburg next time.

We stayed at the Hotel Rappen for a weekend.
The check-in was very friendly, everything worth knowing was explained by the nice lady at the reception.
The room was very simple, the bathroom very small. Unfortunately, the quality of sleep was significantly impaired by the bad mattress (personal opinion). We booked a comfort room (for the tour), so we expected a little more.

Importantly, everything was very clean.

It is worth mentioning that the room is in the annex building, i.e.
walking across the parking lot to the main building for breakfast is no problem when the weather is nice and dry.

The breakfast was good, large selection of food and drinks, unfortunately we and other guests had to clear the previous guest's table ourselves, probably due to the lack of staff.

The location is very good, you are in the center of the action in just a few minutes.

The hotel is located just outside the historic centre of the village. Some of the rooms offer very nice views of the town. It is big and has ample (free!!) parking. We had a family room that was spacious. It did not have separate rooms so you sleep with the kids in one big room. With small children this is a challenge sometimes.

I gave service two stars because I found some things a bit old fashioned; they have a sauna but you have to pay extra to use it. There are charging facilities for your electric car but to use it you have to pay the hotel € 30 just to switch it on… Why not add a little to the room charge and offer your services free of charge? That is the way I think a modern hotel should go forward.

The bathroom was rely tiny and basic! You can be in there with one at a time, be careful not to bump in to stuff! For a four star hotel it could have been a bit more luxurious. There is a shower that was oké. The beds were nice, great breakfast and the hotel was clean and quiet. A good stopover on our way to the Alps but the hotel has a bit more to offer if they change some of the policies!

Wonderful hotel, very close the city wall with a fabulous breakfast! The front desk staff, especially Alex, couldn't have been more helpful. We stayed in a large, older room with lovely vintage furniture, very quiet and comfortable. Breakfast was very busy with many guests, but the staff was efficient and there were tons of options for food, coffee, cereal, etc. Great place to stay while visiting Rothernburg! Dinner was also recommended and very good at the Pizza Roma, a 7 minute walk away.

Good walking distance (about 8 min) from the train station and about 10 min to the main square. Room is very small with limited walking space. We requested for a kettle and was told to collect it at the reception, cups to be separately from the restaurant which was already closed when we checked in so we had to wander aimlessly for help. We requested for toothbrush sets as there were none in the room and we didn’t bring any along given all hotels during our trips offer such basic amenities - the staff told us that she had to look for some as she is unsure and she handed us two disposable sets after she found it - without saying anything. The next day we were charged 3 Euro for the two sets of toothbrushes with bristles as hard as bathroom brush (no kidding). If we had know they cost 3 euro which should be communicated upfront to us first, we would simply walk to the nearest store to get two good ones that we can even bring home. Given the choice to choose again, there are many other options of hotel located inside the old wall itself that I would explore.

We were only there for a few days. Unfortunately, the lady at reception seemed a little annoyed when we arrived. Probably a result of the festival weekend the day before. Basically a well-renovated hotel. However, we were accommodated in the guest house at the back. Breakfast was basically everything. Here too, the staff were slightly annoyed. The lady who was supposed to make fried eggs was concentrating on chatting with her colleagues. But her fried eggs were first-class. Very bad: dogs were allowed in the breakfast room and we had to move because other guests' dogs smelled horrible. That is an absolute NO GO! Unfortunately, the bike cellar was too small, too few charging options for e-bikes. The caretaker solved the problem quickly and easily. Very positive. Otherwise, everything was clean and well-maintained. It was unpleasant that the sauna cost extra. There was also no safe in the room in the guest house. That should be standard.

We did not get the room we booked and paid for. . We booked the junior suite because their site said "Wake up to a view of the gentle hills of the Franconian Heights". We checked into a room on a low floor on the main road with no view of anything. When I went back to reception and mentioned this the front desk receptionist was very dismissive and told us we were wrong and that they had many different suites. We were honestly too tired to argue. Surprising that they didn't simply move us as the Hotel was almost empty.
It was the only place we stayed in Germany with poor service. The breakfast staff only had 2/3 tables to look after but they were so bored. I think maybe this Hotel needs to close down in low season so the staff can come back a bit refreshed.
We would not stay here again.
