Excellent hôtel. The staff were very professional, helpful and friendly. The location is optimal, close to many undergrounds, bus and tram stops. The room itself was clean, we had a suite which offered our family of three enough space for our two-week stay in this hotel. The breakfast was great and filling, with a variety of healthy options. We will be happy to stay here again in the future. Highly recommend!

We had a recent stay at Das Nikolai Hotel and loved it. The Leopold area it is located in is very nice with lots of restaurants and shops, beautiful architecture and right by the English Gardens. It was very easy to walk to many sights and as well the trains were a block away and very convenient. The hotel has been beautifully updated. The two rooms my family had were large by european standards and very charming with great furnishings and comfortable beds. There are also small balconies to sit on if the weather permits. The rooms were very quiet with one of them facing the courtyard. The breakfast room was very pretty with a great selection of foods available including eggs made to order. The staff were all very helpful and accomodating and there to answer all questions and make recommendations.
We would return to this small boutique style hotel with personal service in a very nice area and would highly recommend it to others.

Have you ever wondered what traveling might have been like before the age of mass tourism? I often have -- and must say that staying at Das Nikolai Hotel gave me an unexpected glimpse into that past. From the moment we arrived we were treated like long-lost, treasured relatives and this personalized service never failed during our 3-night stay. We were a party of 5 and all of us had the same sense that this small and intimate hotel was a truly great find. The owners spent years in Myanmar and most of the furnishings and various decorations throughout the hotel come from there. This gives the hotel a particular ambience; a very successful and extremely tasteful fusion of Asia and Germany. The location of the hotel is perfect both for visiting Munich's many sites as well as for strolling in the near-by English Garden, Munich's equivalent of New York's Central Park. The hotel is located in Schwabing, the bohemian part of Munich famous for its pubs, restaurants and bars, as well as small boutiques and several large department stores. You only need to walk one short block from the hotel to be on a main street (Leopoldstrasse) full of action, while the hotel will give you a quiet night's rest because it's not on a noisy street full of traffic. Famous sites such as the Hofbraeu Haus or the Munich Opera are only two subway stations away. This review would not be complete without mentioning the absolutely wonderful buffet breakfast with fresh fruits, cheeses, cold cuts, breads, croissants, etc. of the highest quality. Eggs were freshly cooked for us and delivered directly to our table. We are experienced travelers but have rarely been more pleased with a hotel than with Das Nikolai Hotel.
One word of caution, however: If you have a car with you it will take a bit of coordination with the staff to make sure that you can park in the hotel's small driveway. On-the-street parking is very limited and very expensive, so I would call ahead to make sure that there will be room for your car in the driveway. We ended up leaving our keys at the reception and our car was moved by the staff to accommodate the comings and goings of other hotel guests. Not a bad deal for getting free parking in Munich!

The location of this hotel is good. Unfortunately, that's the only good thing about it. Room was cramped. Very stuffy. Windows on fourth floor barely opened. The shower was absurd. It was a bath with a shower head, but shower head was over a ledge. The bathroom light lit up the entire room, so good luck going to bathroom in middle of the night without waking up your spouse. Street was noisy. Internet was spotty to unusable. Further, and most disappointing, management refused to alter a reservation on three days notice - forcing us to pay for 4 nights when we stayed three. No reason to stay in a cramped, stuffy room with no air circulation, spotty Internet and a bathroom that barely functions. Especially when management wasn't helpful. Avoid at all costs.

my review is based on a one-night-stay in september. the hotel is situated in an old (historical) building; our room was of modest size, furniture was renewed, wc and shower have glass doors, no noise proof, i did not find the cushions to be comfortable; no wardrobe to put your clothes away (if you stay for more days, it is inconvenient); the staff was very cordial. breakfast was rich and even the cappuccino was of italian quality. must say that as a non-smoker I scented the cigarette smoke in the room and i did not enjoy it. given we were in for a night, i did not ask to change rooms. hotel is situated a few meters away from leopoldstrasse where you can find caffes, restaurants, bars and pubs, esp for the night. it is located between two u-bahn stations: giselastrasse and muenchner freiheit; we used muenchner freiheit (5 min walking) and it is a 10 minute ride to marienplatz. although leopoldsrasse can be quite noisy after dark, i found the hotel's position quiet. our room (202) was on the second floor, above the chinese restaurant, which i thought would be smelly, but it was not. beware, if you arrive by car, you will face difficulties finding a parking place, which by the way you have to pay for on hourly basis. the englischer garten is a step away. we paid 180 euro for the room incl. breakfast. overall, i recommend it.

Our recent stay at the boutique hotel, Das Nikolai in Schwabing, is all we expected from earlier reviews on Trip Adviser. It sits in convenient and quiet corner just a few steps from the busy Leopold Str, between two u-bahn stations--Gisela Str and Muncher Friehiet--and only a very few minutes ride to the Marianplatz. It is also within walking distance of many restaurants and shops and the English Garden.. I would say the location is as convenient as those in the middle of the city, maybe even more so. The rooms are attractive with a softer atmosphere than the usual colorless German hotel rooms. Rather than two duvet covered beds, this room included a desk, sofa, two chairs, duvet covers, colorful lamps, a small dresser with a pale green color scheme. (very nice for quiet conversations with friends who we had arranged to meet in Munich.) The bath is small, but efficient The breakfast buffet with rolls, breads, eggs, fruit, meats, cheeses, vegetables, yogurt, salmon, jams, and a variety of other spreads is more than ample. Best of all is the very friendly staff, ready to assist at any time of day with any sort of problem. I will certainly stay at the Nikolai during my next visit to Munich.

We enjoyed our stay and recommend this hotel. Things to know:

1. Das Nikolai is very well located – just one short block off the main street in Schwabing, which is full of restaurants, shopping, bakeries, bars, etc.

2. The hotel is only 2.5 blocks to the subway station. So, it’s super convenient to catch a subway for the quick trip to the Marienplatz (old town downtown).

3. The Schwabing stop for the Lufthansa Airport Bus is a short cab ride away. Taking a short cab to and from the hotel to the Schwabing Lufthansa Airport Bus stop combined with the airport bus is much, much cheaper than a cab to the airport. Note, when coming from the airport, the bus driver will call you a cab, so it’ll be waiting when you arrive at the Schwabing stop.

4. The breakfast buffet is much nicer than I expected for small boutique hotel. Hot breakfast made to order (eggs, bacon), fruits, pastries, cheeses, meats, smoked salmon, juices, cereals and specialty coffees (such as espresso and cappuccino).

We stayed for 3 nights in July at Das Nikolai. I have to say, this was one of the nicest hotel stays we have had for many reasons. Its a nice, small boutique-like hotel in an excellent location.

1. Staff - The entire staff of Das Nikolai (Marco, Isabelle, sorry forgetting a couple of names) was excellent. They were considerate and helpful. They always had great recommendations, and went out of their way to make sure our stay was comfortable
2. Location: The location of Leopoldstrasse is excellent. Metro stops were 5-7 minutes walking, and more importantly there were great restaurants very close by. This helped a lot when we got back tired from a day full of activities. Do try out the Osteria (thanks Marco), and the ice cream places close by. There is a Starbucks and a SF Coffee company close by for those who miss it :). Apart from that, if you need a sim card, there are mobile companies very close by too
3. Breakfast: The best breakfast spread I have seen. The selection was great, the fruits were yum!, the baked treats were super and you were served fresh coffee, espresso (and eggs if you wish). The breakfast area overlooks a street and it is nice to sit in the morning.

The room was good, a little small, but that was expected. The bed was awesome, and the decor was contemporary and really well done.

I am very glad we ended up staying at Das Nikolai. Would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Munich.

This is our second stay at Das Nikolai, and it was quite nice. There is a wonderful continental breakfast in the mornings, and the staff are very friendly. Our room was on the 2nd floor (floor 1 in EU), which was an inner room, but with a small balcony. It was nice to sit in the afternoons to relax away from the touristy noise. The one downside, which is a small one, is that the toilettry service in the bathroom was lax - the shower bath soap was not refilled during our stay, and we only received one bar of soap for the sink. Also, no small in-room fridges available, nor coffee/tea machines. Other than that, it is a perfectly located hotel, with bars, restaurants, and shops in the immediate area, and only 5 minute walk from the U-bahn station. We really enjoyed our stay here.

Stayed 2 nights. This hotel is well located. The staff was superior, helpful and attentive. Clean & decent sized room. Breakfast was average compared to other places we stayed. Hotel was older but sort of quaint at the same time. Street parking a little challenging. For some reason the Wifi did not work during the night hours. Overall, a good experience. A reliable, safe, clean place.
