We loved this hotel. Spent 5 days, using Avignon as a base for day trips. First, the hotel is beautiful. You enter via a large, landscaped courtyard that also serves as an outdoor bar/restaurant. This became a favorite place to sit for a while. Hotel internet extended to the outdoor space. Indoor public areas were beautifully decorated with antiques, tapestries, and other art. Our room, which was one of the smaller rooms, was still spacious enough and had lots of storage: 2 closets, shelving, drawers, and a large desk area. The window overlooked the courtyard. Bed was comfortable, lighting was very good. Bathroom also had good space, large mirrors, and excellent lighting. Bathrobes & slippers were provided along with big, deluxe bath towels and top-notch toiletries. Some reviews have said internet didn't work and staff was less than stellar. These issues must have been corrected because internet worked perfectly and staff went out of their way to be friendly and helpful. In other words, a first class experience all around.

Follow me as I discover more of the world and be sure to reach out if you have any questions ...

According to the hotel by-line, the hotel came into existence in 1799. It blows me away that I get to experience part of this history while enjoying the modern amenities the hotel has implemented. The bed was extremely comfortable, the sheets/towels/robes were luxurious, the AC in the room was quiet as I'm averse to noise while trying to get a good night sleep, the bathroom was large & roomy. Even though I was on the second floor, I couldn't hear anything from upper floors. It is conveniently located with a short walk to the main commercial area & the wall/bridge. I basically walked everywhere while my friend rented a bicycle from a nearby place (the hotel should be able to point you where) to discover more. My friend & I stayed in rooms 201 & 211. 201 is sun dappled, has a view to a street and a modest bathroom. 211 has more of a courtyard view with a large bathroom with separate bathtub & shower.

Tips: You have to leave the room key with the frontdesk as it's on a heavy bell. Book early and be specific about your preferences. Each room is different & as this was founded in 1799 & modernized, there may be a few quirks (for example, it required two steps to unlock the room door). No fault of the hotel, there are some eateries directly across that played loud music in the evening. Try avoiding the rooms facing that direction.

Suggestions: Some of the frontdesk people seemed inexperienced & can seem a little overwhelmed if there were some questions/requests OR a larger group at the same time. One sign of this was that either none of them will respond or all of them will try to respond at the same time & talk to each other while ignoring the guest who asked the question/request. Some of them seem to be taking directions from the porters which was unusual. A taxi was ordered for us to take us to the train station but direction was given to take us to the wrong station. Luckily, we discovered it in time & had to scramble into another taxi. The breakfast staff also seemed a bit overwhelmed. They seemed taken aback & flustered when we asked for hot water (come on, we're Americans but surely a lot of the Brits ask for hot water for tea, haha). For omelette, there was only a choice of cheese or ham. No basic vegetables such as mushroom, onion, bell peppers. I'm going to chalk all this up to the pandemic & challenge in staffing with experienced staff.

We stayed at this hotel for a long weekend, and had a very nice welcoming as we received a free upgrade to a suite. The room could not be improved, with a very nice bed, plenty of bath room arrangements, a very nice balcony, etc. The staff is also very helpful and friendly, they remembered our room numbers, what we preferred for breakfast drinks and cleaning was always spotless.
Minor points of improvement would be: a more clear (website and in the room) communication on opening days and hours of bar and restaurant (we were disappointed to learn the bar does not operate all evenings; including also no room service of drinks at that time), and a better management of savoury breakfast (all eggs and bacon sold out, no smoked salmon, etc). That being said, the staff did their utmost to accommodate whatever we requested. For this reason, we would definitely consider returning there.

This has to be one of the most disappointing hotel stays of our lives. Before choosing this hotel, I had read lots of reviews, people seemed happy, the reviews that mentioned a bad smell had been from a couple years ago, so I assumed that the problem must have been fixed. It was not! The smell of the place (old and moldy actually made it difficult to sleep) We had started the evening with the windows open to air out the place but then we were forced to close them because of the noise from loud music just under our window. We had stayed at 2 previous chateau hotels along the cote d'azure before arriving in Avignon, it's not because a place is old and historic that the rooms have to smell. The "smoke free" room even came with ash tray and hotel matches. The bedding was also unpleasant. The headboard was covered in a white cloth material that had tinges of yellow discolouration. If you have allergies avoid this place.
The bathroom was huge, but lacked style, and the water pressure in the shower was terrible.
The hotel is exceptionally well located, in the old town, within walking distance of the Pope's Palace and shops.
Parking is tricky in that area of the town, fortunately the hotel has valet service at 25 euros a night.
They had a beautiful courtyard cafe but unfortunately, the restaurant and food service was closed so the only food to be had at the hotel was drinks and deserts. Very poor value for money.
Needless to say we won't be returning to or recommending this hotel.

We paid a whopping 800 euros for a stay of two nights in a 'superior' room. On both nights we were woken frequently by loud music and screaming clientelle from the bars in front of the hotel (although our room shutters and windows were closed). Having finally made it to sleep on the first night, we were awoken again by the hotel fire alarm at 2.00am in the morning. Standing in the front lobby in a state of sleepy shock, staff told us that the alarm had been triggered by a guest smoking in their room. The hotel does indeed provide each room with a box of matches, but it seems unlikely that cigarette smoke would have set off the system for at least 10 minutes. Bar staff and the concierge did their best to do a good job. Management did not care enough to reply to my no-contact complaint e-mail, sent to reservations during our stay, detailing our experience and asking for some compensation. Reception had assured us we would receive a prompt reply, but we didn't. The hotel showed no hint of being 5 star and does not warrant the prices charged. One of the hotel's restaurants was closed, and the concierge service was not being offered during our stay. The garden area was also not very clean.

A gorgeous property, with much charm and quaintness set in a wonderful spot just inside the old city walls, with the most beautiful courtyard.
Sadly, the benefits stop there.
The location is extremely noisy by night, especially for rooms facing the square.
The room we had needed maintenance which appeared long overdue.
Service was generally friendly but far from top-notch even in the Michelin-starred restaurant.
The overall guest experience did not represent value for money.
Not highly recommended.

Nice historic hotel. Friendly and helpful staff!! I would have rated higher but the breakfast was a huge disappointment. Being a high end hotel, the breakfast buffet was overpriced (28 euros)with very limited selection. Most hotels at that category offer a much better variety of food. I agree with other Trip Advisors, order a la carte or dine elsewhere.

Hotel d’Europe is a most wonderful hotel to stay when in Avignon. This converted 16th century mansion house is the most fitting place to retreat to after exploring Avignon as is the shaded courtyard bar area.

The hotel is ideally located just a few minutes walk from the Place des Papes and Place de l’Horlige and next to the city walls so you can easily step outside to stroll the banks of the Rhone.

Our room was absolutely luxurious. It was large and very comfortable with full mini bar, tea and coffee making facilities, a fully stocked bathroom and lovely linens and towels.

The breakfast was lovely and all the staff were very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend this hotel if you were ever staying in Avignon.

The hotel is in a very good location and is a splendid looking property.

However , there are a few issues which revolve around the staff.

Firstly , our room has dust under the kettle and there were some hairs in the bath tub. Also the separate shower is unusable due to the low water pressure.

The most disappointing aspect however was the greeting by the reception staff.

We were advised that our car would be taken care of by the valet , which normally means parking your car at the front of the hotel. This we did only to be informed we were in the wrong place by a very surly female receptionist. The valet soon came along and had no issue and took the car away.

The same receptionist then checked us in. She was very unfriendly and dismissive , the whole process seemed like a big chore for her.

After lunch and a walk around Avignon we walked back to the hotel and spotted her outside the main door on her phone.

When passing reception they barely glance up at you , when you are away from them you can hear them chatting and messing around.

The hotel management needs a wake up call as this establishment is not cheap and standards needs to be raised quickly.

I would advise you to book another hotel until the reviews improve.

Hotel d’Europe offers the perfect location and luxurious 5-star hotel experience in Avignon. We booked two nights in a Superior room, and we were very pleased with the large room size, the very large white marble bathroom, fully stocked mini fridge, beautiful tall ceilings, and the historic shuttered windows overlooking the courtyard. The hotel has been a fixture in Avignon for almost 500 years. Special recognition to the front desk team, who provided personalized service for me and my husband throughout our stay. The dining room and breakfast buffet was fantastic, and we were very impressed with the special attention we received from the server each morning. The courtyard was a lovely outdoor retreat to enjoy the Spring sunshine and shady corners under the huge tree branches. The hotel is a short walk to the Pope’s Palace, the Rhône river, the Benezet Bridge, Place de l’Horoge and restaurant options. We both loved the romance and history of Hotel d’Europe, and we would definitely stay here again.
