We loved this place. Had paid for a river/chateau view and it was beautiful especially soon after sunrise. The king bed was very big and the separate toilet bathroom a great benefit (more hotels should have this arrangement). Easy access to the town, motorway and Loire region as a whole. Great breakfast buffet with the same river view and the outside deck was the perfect place for a pre dinner drink. Staff efficient but not “in your face”. Wonderful stay

We enjoyed our stay at this lovely hotel. The room was a comfortable size with french doors offering an amazing view of the castle and the town of Saumur. We enjoyed their breakfast both days of our stay. We used underground parking at $12 euros a day. Little things that bothered us were paper cups for water and coffee. Staff were very accommodating and were happy to provide cups from the dining room for tea and coffee in the room. They did provide tea bags and instant coffee packets. We wish the dining room was functioning for dinner but understand the impact of COVID on these types of facilities. Easy walk to the castle and lots of restaurants with a 4 to 10 minute walk.

Very well situated hotel on an island in the river with easy walking access to the heart of Saumur across one of the city bridges. Great views across the river of the chateau, beautifully lit at night. We thought the premium rooms were very good value for the price charged, comfortable and well equipped and with the full benefit of those views. Parking might look problematic at first but go in and ask and you'll find there is a car park just around the corner from the hotel.

It was a hot day with temperatures of 33-35 degrees Celsius. The welcome card in the hotel room says that 19 degrees Celsius is a good temperature for a good night's sleep and what I personally like too. The hotel mentioned that the air conditioning is set to 22 degrees Celsius but that you could ask for a lower temperature in your room at the reception if you wanted. Arriving at the room the lowest adjustable temperature was 24.5 degrees Celsius and when I reported to the reception that I would like to have a lower temperature they said they were not allowed to do this due to company policy. So for me no more Mercure hotel on hot days.
What I do want to mention is that the staff was otherwise very friendly so no criticism of the staff whatsoever.

Came with my wife in November, I had pleasant memories of this hotel. Big disappointment this time for a business trip! Fairly small room, ineffective heating in periods of extreme cold, stuck at the thermostat at 22* but probably not reached in the room. Unheated bathroom. To top it all off, very noisy air conditioning, forced to turn it off to sleep so freezing temperature in the morning.
Reservation for 2 days I ask the next day to change rooms. I am only offered the one next door with the same problem! I feel the staff (manager?) is not very empathetic to my problem! And the icing on the cake is that I ask for my second Accor gold status privilege drink on the second evening, which I am refused, stipulating that it is only one drink per stay!!! What would they have done if I had booked in two installments?
Not commercial at all!!!
So big disappointment

This hotel has a superb location (not close to the center) that offers direct views of the Loire and the castle. The bar/breakfast room is ideal. Otherwise the usual services of a Mercury. We know positively what to expect!

The hotel is well located, with views across the river towards the chateau. It's in a quiet area but a short walk across the bridge into town for bars, restaurants and sights. The railway station is also a short walk in the other direction. Outdoor parking was good and felt safe. Our room was on the opposite side to the river, which was disappointing at first. However, as we stayed during the very high temperatures, we found that it only got full sun in the morning which meant that we could open the shutters and let in natural light. The room & bed were comfortable. This from somebody who takes a small mattress topper in the car, which I didn't need to use. The room had an inner door between the door onto the corridor and the room proper, which excluded sound. Air conditioning worked well. Although we couldn't turn the temperature lower than 21C, it was cool enough in the extreme temperatures and we slept well. Breakfast was good & included all the usual stuff, with a good choice of fruit. Staff replenished food regularly. The breakfast room overlooked the river, with an outdoor terrace where you could also eat and enjoy the wildlife on the river, plus the views of Saumur. We enjoyed drinks on the terrace in late afternoon or evening, served by friendly, helpful staff. Bar prices similar to bars in town. The terrace was perfect for watching the Bastille Day firework display on the bridge. Cracking view. I would definitely stay here again, if visiting this area

The hotel location is excellent and most of the staff are very friendly. As noted in other reviews rooms can be very hot and opening of windows is discouraged due to insects given that it is close to the river. Requests for air conditioning which is advertised were met with a reaction that some patrons find it cold and this heating system and air-conditioning system are linked and only either one can be on notwithstanding the fact that there are individual controls in the rooms. They should be upfront and advertise it as only being available in July and August! I'm sure I will get a bland reply focusing on the positive comments I have made from the manager.

Used to sleeping in Mercury hotels, this one deserves a good refresh because the numerous stains on the carpet in the room are a stain. Moisture spots under the window but also others elsewhere may be time to remove the carpet and move to parquet. Otherwise large and clean, welcoming staff and parking with plenty of space

We are experienced travellers having visited most corners of France and we live in central France but this hotel is certainly not 4 star. If we compared this hotel to a 3 star hotel we stayed in during August it would struggle to get 2 stars. Yes its in a good location, convenient for the town and good parking but the room and service were very disappointing indeed. If it were not for the fact that Saumur is a tourist attraction it would struggle to survive in our opinion! Our small room had a damp musty smell and was in need of refurbishment and did certainly not have a good view as it was at the back. The fridge despite my best efforts failed to cool anything and the air con was noisy. The TV failed to work so we called the desk and it was eventually fixed. The small swivel mirror support in the bathroom was broken and the guy could not fit this when called and the bathroom was well past its used by date. We returned to the hotel in the evening and asked for a grand crème coffee. The girl on duty in the bar area was not sure how to make one so she asked the desk attendant The bar girl appeared to have little knowledge about anything and when we asked for a Calvados she was completely confused. The hotel has no full restaurant although they do offer some food and the breakfast was adequate providing you do not ask for any variation from what's offered. We were told post stay that this hotel has 'trainees', not a lot of help when you are the client. We sent two emails to Accor eventually receiving a reply from the hotel only for all our concerns to be dismissed - obviously in this hotel 'the customer is never right'. Needless to say we will certainly not be staying at this 4 star Mercure again.

Response from RAPHAEL BERTRAND, Directeur général at Mercure Bords de Loire Saumur Hotel
Responded 18 Sept 2021
Dear, We thank you for taking the time to share your experience of your stay and for sending me all the comments by email which will allow us to better understand your expectations. We do our best every day to bring you the greatest comfort and offer you a stay that meets your expectations. Regarding the operation of your mini bar, it is connected to the circuit breaker in your room. In order to obtain continuous use, all you need to do is insert your room card into the circuit breaker, leave it in place and thus obtain the expected temperature of the mini-bar. Cards are available at the reception area on request, or any other type of loyalty card of the same diameter. Regarding your television, it turns out that the previous guest had on his own initiative to modify the connections and parameters of the latter. This element was therefore taken into account as quickly as possible by our technical service. We are a reception and support center for young apprentices. As such, you were greeted by our young intern at the bar and we therefore apologize that despite our vigilance, we could not meet your expectations. Our trainees wear a badge to clearly identify their status. It is by making mistakes that we learn best. You have in your room a quality line available 24 hours a day to answer all your questions and / or requests. In this troubled period, we thank you for highlighting the quality of our adaptation, our remarkable team spirit which allows us to always serve you better. For more than a year now, the health crisis has profoundly changed our sector of activity. well despite this, we have invested heavily and will continue to do so in 2021 and 2022. We thank you for your encouragement, your recognition which brings us so much comfort and allows us to maintain our will to progress. We look forward to welcoming you back to Saumur. Best regards Mr BERTRAND R Director

Bien cordialement
