Very small room with 2 beds on the 1st floor poorly soundproofed. Tiny bathroom. Together a little old. No double glazing and noisy street. Very good breakfast. Very friendly staff. Central location about ten minutes walk from the Loire. Local bike available

Quite a walk from the station pulling. Suitcase if travelling by train but very cheap for France and no complaints about cleanliness. The hotel door is locked to arrivals until 3 pm which means they do. Or store your suitcase if you arrive any earlier, tricky for train travellers when there may be very limited connections to Saumur and very early arrival is unavoidable. Also, no in room telephone means you must descend the steep stairs for any assistance or requests - I could find no remote control for the television in my room- and I you were in a health crisis this may not possible. The front desk is unattended after 8 pm. I did not see this advised on the accommodation sites either. I didn’t feel comfortable knowing that in case of fire or emergency no staff was available to direct me to safety. There is no elevator, but that is declared in their advertising, Be advised the stairs are narrow and steep, an issue for. Dry short people like me. Otherwise, if these issues do not bother you, it is indeed value for money.

Very nice home. Pleasant afternoon and morning staff. Very good for coming there by bike, it is possible to shelter it in a secure room. Close to pedestrian streets, the city center, the castle. The single room on the second floor (no elevator) is functional and clean. Very good breakfast. And we can get there early! (15 hours)

Be careful, this is not a hotel but a dump! Once in the tiny rooms, you will live with your neighbors. We hear everything. We also hear water from the pipes as soon as your neighbor flushes the toilet. The furniture is broken, the mattresses are worn and uncomfortable. A word of advice, if you have the choice find another hotel. The prices are expensive for the quality offered!

The only good thing is location. Other than that is nothing to write home about. Very small room, I got a single with a double bed, still small, barely space to get around the bed. It is quiet but only because it is facing the rear of the building, strange vew of roofs.
The bed is not bad, the washroom can use at least minor renovations, broken tiles on the floor and not even a hand soap.
This will do for me for a night only. Checked in at 7:50, check it next morning at 7. Be aware, the receptionist is there only till 8 pm, don't be late.
Parking in front of the hotel if you get a space and only good till 9 am in morning.

This charming hotel is two minutes walk from the bustling centre of town yet quiet and relaxing. The hotel owner spoke excellent English and was helpful beyond measure. We would definitely stay here again.

The Volney, on Volney St., is almost 2 km from the train station on the other side of the Loire River, but close to most places of interest in town. This small hotel across from the local Poste lies in a reasonably quiet street at night. Upon arrival, I was greeted very nicely but found out that the owner has reserved my room for one night only. I showed him the emails we had exchanged stating I had requested the room for 2 nights and his own confirmation. As the place was full for the next few days, he offered right away to find me another hotel similar to his own at the same price, which he did within minutes (see review on the Auberge des Écuyers). In the meantime, I was given the key to my room on the 2nd floor right away even though the cleaning lady has not quite finished cleaning it (vacuuming still to do). I also received a code to unlock the front door of the hotel past 10 p.m.
Like most French hotels, there was no elevator. The room was clean, although looking a bit tired, with the usual sink and bidet in one corner. There was a small wet stain on the floor besides the bidet and a small fan was quietly trying to dry it. The large shower and the small bathroom were in the hallway. Shampoo, soap and towels were provided. A small t.v. stood in one corner. The double bed had an ordinary mattress and clean sheets. Overall a basic room for a basic price (35 euros).
The next morning, I did not take the usual continental breakfast offered for 5 euros but was offered nevertheless a free cup of tea by the owner who assured me, a second time, that I would like the other hotel (he was right, I did). He also helped me find out about transportation to Fontevraud, the royal abbey, for the next day and was generally very helpful about the local attractions, offering me a small passport full of coupons for free tastings and other rebates to different places. I was able to leave my luggage in a safe place for the morning.
Travel tips:
Maison du vin: Good place to taste—free—the local wines, especially if you cannot go to the vineyards themselves. Bottles are sold the same price as at the vineyards.
Combier Distillery: Makers of the Triple Sec and other alcohols. Short visit of the distillery and tasting of some products afterwards. Coupon for free visit and tasting in the small passport offered by the Volney’s owner.
Château de Saumur: Beautiful castle on the top of the hill but presently in renovations (date of reopening unknown). Visit therefore limited to courtyard and two very small exhibits (costumes and riding equipment) for 3 euros. Good view on the town.
French Cavalry Museum: Small but free museum of limited interest.
Restaurant Les Forges St-Pierre, Place St-Pierre: Rabbit spread, bread, main dish, chocolate mousse, ¼ liter of wine for 17 euros. Good service and good food.
G-20: Supermarket at 6 Roosevelt St., near the Place de la Bilange.
Internet: in the Bar St-Nicholas, on St-Nicolas street. Free use of the one and only computer when you buy a drink.

I thank you for your comment. As you, we also are not satisfied with equipment of the rooms when we took over the hotel in december 2009. Since this date, we have renovated our hotel, all other bedrooms, except for number 211, are equiped bedrooms with an ensuite. I will be pleased to meet you, you would be able to discover the room that you occupied and I'm sure that you wouldn't recognize it. Hoping to see you soon in Saumur.

Having stayed in other 2 star hotel in France I was looking forward to a week stay in the hotel our friends had booked. Was I wrong, this is a wonderful place to stay. Not largest comfortable with friendly staff who do their best to look after you. Center of Sumur, the river, the Chateau and restaurants are all a short walk away. WiFi can be tricky and very intermittent but it is there most of the time. It can be noisy if you have a room on the street and have the windows open, close the window and it's quite.

We only stayed one night but were very satisfied with the hotel. The bed was comfortable, room was small but clean - ensuite room with bath. The proprietor was helpful and recommended restaurants - I left a couple of garments in the room, he phoned me and we arranged for them to be returned to me. I have no complaints at all about this hotel.
