Hôtel Rive Sud garners commendation for its commendable value, with guests enjoying the high-quality breakfast and spacious rooms that ensure a stay worth every penny. The hotel's spotless environment and meticulous upkeep are frequently highlighted, adding to its welcoming atmosphere. Staff at Hôtel Rive Sud receive accolades for their attentive and personalized service, enhancing the elegantly decorated surroundings with a cozy charm. While the amenities, including the decor and locally-sourced breakfast, impress consistently, the prime location also earns praise, allowing guests to easily explore nearby attractions. Although most guests find the rooms comfortable and charming, a few note limited space and ventilation concerns.

Our tour of the main wine-producing areas of the Loire Valley continued with Stage 5: Amboise to Chinon (Day 6 in France). We were now based in Chinon.

We had arrived in Chinon just before mid-afternoon and we felt very fortunate to be able to park up in the street (with no parking restrictions) whilst we were out in the town. We had been sampling wine, whilst we walked extensively in the town, so moving our car into the hotel carpark was a definite no-no.

We had stayed before in 2017 on our ‘Grand Tour of France’, and liked the hotel then. Now, under new ownership, we liked it a whole lot more. The restaurant area has been extended into a multi-purpose area where breakfast can be enjoyed looking our onto the cleverly designed garden that used picture-window sized mirrors. The building next to the property has been converted into additional rooms, including a top floor luxury honeymoon style suite.

We couldn’t recall much of the bar and dining room area from our last visit, but it looks very smart and shouts quality. We stayed in a first floor room last time and recall how good it was then. This time we stayed in a ground floor room that looked out over the garden.

Yes, there is still things to do, but what has been done is really good.

After unpacking a freshening up we took drinks in the new multi-purpose garden-facing room. The wine (a Jean-Maurice Raffault 2022 Chinon Blanc) was excellent: very light and dry with melon and green apple on the nose, good minerality on the palate with a slightly short finish.

Our room was excellent and sleep quality was perfect as it was far quieter here on the south side of the river. The good shower was most welcome in the morning. We took breakfast which was buffet style and very good.

Mine host was very helpful, engaging and spoke good English. We would stay here again, sans doute.

Everything about this hotel was perfect for our small group of cyclists. The rooms, although compact, were well appointed and comfortable, the courtyard was a pleasure to use for relaxing and dining 'al fresco', the food was fabulous and the owners couldn't have been any more accommodating if they tried. In addition to the very well stocked breakfast buffet, including freshly baked pain au chocolat and croissants, the owner, Matthieu, kindly offered our group, several delicious and hearty, three-course dinners, for a very reasonable price. As hungry and thirsty cyclists, he hit the mark every time with his unfailing patience and quick service.

Check in was very simple and the staff were extremely nice and helpful. At 130€ a night (with breakfast) I think this was quite expensive considering the facilities, but it was the car show weekend, so I expect all the hotels in Chinon upped their prices for this time. The room was very comfortable, clean and everything 'worked'. Breakfast was really good, and if you wanted it, plentiful, with fresh croissants, fruits, breads - all you could ask for. There was a lovely terrace to sit and the annex we had, had it's own lounge area. The only downside was the snacks were not available at the weekends and the bar was very limited and closed very early.

We stayed in a family room. The room was cramped and extremely stuffy. We could smell the musty air soon as we entered the room. If you are congested in any way, you will not be able to breathe comfortably in the room because the room does not have proper air circulation. Opening the main window provided only temporary relief because as soon as I closed the window the room became extremely stuffy again, and obviously I could not keep the window open for too long because it was cold at night. This specific room should not be rented out to paying guests. It should be converted into a storage facility or something else that can be useful to the hotel.

Hotel parking was extremely limited and street parking was difficult.

On the upside, the room was very clean, and the bathroom was large and modern.

Nonetheless, I do not understand the overly positive reviews for this hotel. I did not have a good experience and was happy to leave.

Very welcoming hotel close to the centre of Chinon. We arrived on e-bikes which were accommodated safely and could be charged in their garage. Pleasant garden and seating at the rear. Fine room and fantastic breakfast with good choice of local products. Enjoyed our stay here..

I had a great stay at the South Shore Hotel. The rooms are very comfortable and well decorated (+ impeccable cleaning).
Breakfast is homemade/local, which is a big +! It is also possible to eat on site in the evening. I advise you to try as the owners cook very well and are very friendly.

There are not enough superlatives for how good this hotel is and its owners are, so much so we actually didn't want to leave. Wonderful throughout our stay, it actually kept getting better.
We arrived totally unplanned, nearly missed it in favour of an Ibis we couldn't find, and boy were we happy we dropped in.
Only one room left, the minute we entered we felt at home, a lovely cheery reception, but after some dubious stays in previous days, we asked to see room first! Wow.
Everything out of top drawer, decor, furnishing and finishing oozed quality, so we hurried back down to confirm. The lady receptionist was giving another guest an exceptionally detailed direction for restaurants and routes with the town map, such attention to detain impressed us.Limited parking but parked on street a few steps from door ( the old parking has been turned into a wow garden - as gardeners we very much approved).
The decor is wonderful, everywhere, tasteful everywhere, including the drapes, curtains, throws, wall paper, lights, it's all been thought about and sourced with a view to the effect on the planet.
Shower was wonderful, well designed and powerful, on such a hot evening.
Again we didn't eat at night, but went to town for that and ate at a resto earlier described by our hostess.
French hotels don't always provide a kettle and tea facilities, but Rive Sud does. More wonderful as our daily first is a cuppa. More eco sourced tea, coffee, sugar - brilliant, another shower then down to breakfast.
Breakfast was sumptuous. A great selection of everything, beautifully displayed, fresh, and locally sourced bio etc. Our hosts were getting kids to school but never once a lack of attention to their guests, very much like we were part of family, we sat in conservatory enjoying a relaxing start garden side.
Once again we cannot stress how good the experience of staying here at Rive Sud was, and will be back as often as possible, if this review doesn't mean they are permanently fully booked.
Well done to you both, this is how all hotels should look, be equipped and be run.
Fantastic, we loved every minute.

This charming yet modern small hotel was perfect for our group of 14 cyclists. The garden area was lovely and peaceful for relaxing after our rides. There was a good place to store our bikes. Mathieu, his wife and staff were very helpful and accommodating to all our needs. We had 3 delicious group dinners prepared by him - eating outside and the breakfasts were great. Highly recommended!

We very much enjoyed our stay at this privately owned small hotel across the bridge from Chinon. Perfectly located, easy free parking on the street, quiet and very nice rooms. The young owners Rudy and Matthieu are very hospitable and engaging and it really is a delightful place to stay without the noise of Chinon. Excellent rooms, comfortable beds, imaginatively decorated, and ultra modern bathrooms. Great breakfast with the emphasis on local sourcing and bio quality. Highly recommended

We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights and it was perfect. Very short walk to the old town where there were plenty of restaurants with outdoor patios. The rooms were spotless and contained a three piece bathroom…..all recently updated. The spacious courtyard behind the hotel was full of flowers and a lovely place to sit alone or with a group. Rudy and Mathieu were very welcoming….the breakfast had a number of choices....eggs, fruit, cereal, home made yogurt and freshly baked croissants. A couple of evenings Rudy and Mathieu served dinner to our group in the garden which was lovely. I would give Rudy and Mathieu full marks for looking after us so well. Would not hesitate to stay there another time.
