Old house of the 15th century, in the eve town of Chinon, Rue Haute Saint Maurice, house with an interior courtyard with view on the castle of Chinon. The house is composed of a large living room to relax, read or play the board games, from a courtyard to a quiet fountain to have breakfast. Since the Middle Ages, the nobles and royal officers have built large stone houses down below the fortress. The mansions of the 15th century are distinguished by their L-shaped plan around a courtyard opening on the street, their spiral staircase housed in a projecting turret at the corner of the buildings. In the 16th century, the medieval private mansions are remodeled to the taste of the Renaissance: the staircases are encompassed inside the buildings, while the corbelled towers appear on the facades . The window frames and dormer windows are decorated with pilasters and pediments. It is still in the high street, towards the west (rue Voltaire or Haute Saint-Maurice) that we find the most beautiful examples: Maîtrise des Eaux et Forêts, hotel Bodard de la Jacopière, hotel Poirier de Beauvais ... In the 17th -18th centuries, the mansions built are remarkable by the enlargement of the windows, the appearance of balconies in wrought iron, the great staircases of honor: hotel of the Governor, hotel Torterue of Langardière ...

Le Relais Saint Maurice , a place out of time , or of a time that is lost!! This B&B , which would be better to call "Friends Room " is the work of a Master of Ceremonies , " Mauritius " the will of good reception!! You will find , a large cozy room very comfortable and bright , an adjoining bathroom with bathtub where nothing is missing and what to say about the "Breakfast" of homemade pastries: cakes , brioches , gingerbread , cakes that we eat first with the eyes , apple with cinnamon , meringue , fruit juice ... all served on a large table in a room with majestic decoration , dishes of Gien and cutlery in silver and all this with the kindness of Maurice . Place I recommend without any restraint. Eliane and Jean-Luc from 06 to 07 September .

We stayed two nights for visiting chateaus by the Loire River. My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary, this was our first bed and breakfast experience. The place is tastefully furnished by mostly antique. Maurice is a great host, caring, cheerful, and detail oriented. Not only he helped us with our luggage but also made our stay comfortable and enjoyable. Our room was on the top floor, the Agnes’ room, named after Agnes Sorel, a mistress of King Charles VII, art model who once lived there. The house was from 14th century, Maurice purchased it in 2015 and renovated it. He has done it very well. Our room was much larger than the ones we had in Paris, a tapestry and a portrait of a woman from medieval times decorated the walls. In addition to a coffee table set, there were an ottoman chair and two luggage chairs, a writing desk, a dresser, and closet cabinet. There were much more than ordinary supplies, such as an ice pillow, not to mention that coffee cups, a coffee maker, and wine glasses. We had a modern shower with good water pressure and water closet in the room, and a vanity table had abundant supplies. The bed was firm and comfortable. You would definitely feel the host’s hospitality, care, and love. I especially loved the windows on the roof. There were countless choices for breakfast: croissants, coffee, tea, crepes, milk, three fruit juices, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, sausage, hams, jams, peaches and grapes, and several cakes, yogurt and more…to our surprise, silver utensils and linens were used. Maurice poured coffee and hot milk for us. We used to help ourselves with coffee machines in Paris. His breakfast was indeed impressive and noteworthy. Merci, Maurice.

This was our third visit to this beautiful medieval house and we still think it's one of the best places we have stayed in in France. We have stayed in three different rooms, Claude this time, and they are all very spacious, wonderfully furnished with huge bathrooms. As ever, the breakfast is magnificent, with a huge array of meats, cheeses, smoked salmon, breads, home made cakes and pastries, crepes and more. An innovation this year was scrambled eggs and sausages. Maurice is a wonderful, friendly, cheerful host, who apart from some help cleaning the rooms, appears to run the place single handed. A real labour of love. It is also wonderfully located in a picturesque street, a short walk from all the attractions and fine restaurants in Chinon. We'll be back!

We absolutely loved our stay at Au Relais Saint Maurice. In fact, it was one of our favorite places to stay on our two week trip in France this September. We spent four nights at the small hotel. It is located in the quaint French town of Chinon, and centrally located to many breathtaking Chateau’s in the Loire valley. The Château de Chinon was in fact, our favorite of all the castles and fortresses we visited, and our room had a view of the castle at night, which was a treat. The hotel is also within walking distance of the Chateau. The hotel itself, was originally built in the 13th or 14th century, but it has been renovated, and while we could see some of the older beams on the ceiling in our room, the bathroom had lovely state of the art appliances with a modern flare. Our bed was comfortable and room was quiet. There was an abundance of pillows if needed. The water pressure in the shower was the best we had on our trip –especially considering we were on the top floor. The breakfasts were elegantly served and included not only coffee and croissants, but yogurt and eggs, and various homemade breakfast cakes. The staff came in every day, to clean our room. There was a shared small refrigerator outside our door, at the top of the stairs, with sodas and wine for purchase, and we used it as well for a few small items we had bought. We also had free parking on the main street by the river, with a parking pass Maurice had given us. (It is noted that driving on the small cobble stone streets of Chinon, can be challenging, so parking down by the river seemed like the best plan.)
As for hospitality – we loved Maurice! He was so funny as he showed us around the home, demonstrating how to open and shut the old and original front door, and the the window in our room and we loved his sense of humor. While our French was limited, he was able to understand our questions in English, and we had no issues communicating with him. He also showed us some interesting old photos of the home, when he first bought the property, before it was renovated. Further, he was of great help when planning which of the many Chateau’s to visit, marking on the map their location. We thank you Maurice, for your lovely hospitality! A highly recommended place to stay in the Loire Valley.

We stayed 2 nights of a 14 day trip with Maurice. We all voted this our favorite location hands down and decided Maurice's B&B is now our new gold standard. The location in town, and the architecture of the building (rooms all off a central spiral staircase) is prefect. Maurice is a gracious, enthusiastic, and friendly host who obviously has his patrons best interests at heart. There were many little touches in the rooms and common rooms that made our stay extra special. The chambre de Jeanne was truly special, with an extended bathroom that made me feel like a queen for a few days.

This is a spectacularly good chambre d’hote. Located in a charming area of old Chinon. Our room was beautifully decorated and furnished, with a lovely en suite. The dining and living room areas are large, comfortable and beautifully furnished with period furniture Everything about the house is fresh, recently restored (2014-2016) and immaculate. Breakfast was spectacular with a variety of choices too long to list. Maurice is a very attentive, efficient and welcoming host. This is one of the best chambre d’hotes we have ever stayed in over many years of visiting France. Cannot be recommended too much.

No superlatives can describe this establishment and its remarkable host. From the moment one crosses the threshold and enters the beautifully restored home, one cannot help but appreciate the care and attention to detail, the magnificent furniture and furnishings. This extends to the generous contents of each room, the quality of the linen, and the thoughtful little extras. Our host is personable, fun, insightful - he anticipates his guests' needs before they ask - and he is clearly passionate about his job. The breakfast is extraordinary and puts luxury hotels to shame: a huge selection of hot and cold, savory and sweet dishes, all served on beautiful china in a fabulous dining room. We have traveled all over the world and stayed in many B&Bs, but this one in Mauritius far surpasses all the others!

Fabulous stay in "Claude's" bedroom which was beautifully appointed and very comfortable - the bathroom deserves a special mention....what a bath! Maurice's breakfast should also be given a special mention....quite extraordinarily generous and served in truly sumptuous style and surroundings. Alas, we were only there for one night but we won't forget our visit to Chinon and, a special last thanks to Maurice for suggesting a visit to Azay-le Rideau - enchanting!

A wonderful stay in an idyllic, squared and refined setting. The welcome from our host was most delicate and his enthusiasm for welcoming his customers was felt throughout our stay. The ability to bring our dog with complete confidence was also extremely appreciable.
Nothing to complain about, the bedding is a cradle, the decoration is taken care of down to the smallest detail, the cleanliness is perfect, the linen smells very good and the breakfast is absolutely delicious.
A huge thank you and congratulations for this rejuvenating and soothing welcome. 🙏 We will come back without hesitation with great pleasure.

This is one of the best places we have ever stayed in. It's a beautifully restored medieval building. Our room, Henry, was massive, full of lovely furniture and quirky accessories with a spacious, modern bathroom. Breakfast was quite an occasion, served in a beautiful dining room, with a huge range of goodies, many of them home made. Maurice was a charming, amusing and thoughtful host who has obviously put his heart and soul into renovating the building and ensuring that his guests have a comfortable and enjoyable stay. An added touch is that Maurice provides a parking permit enabling you to park for free nearby. A bonus is that the best restaurant in Chinon is directly opposite. All in all, we cannot recommend this place highly enough.

Are you open in October and do you have a restaurant?
I am open and I do not have a restaurant.
My wife has a disability and would need a shower and not too many stairs.
I have a room with shower on the first floor with stairs.
Thank you
