We have stayed 4 summers in a row - and literally experienced a seamless handover from the old owners to the new between 2016 and 2017. The rooms have an absolutely practical design, so you can even store quite a bit of luggage. The beds are comfortable, the bathrooms clean, the Wifi is good (several log-ins available). Parking is easy enough in the side streets. Breakfast offers you nice choices, even including fresh cantaloupe melon, whole grain bread, St. Malo yoghurts (try the vanilla!). The owner, the reception staff, even the cleaning ladies: everybody is exceptionally friendly, kind and helpful! Reception staff last summer even helped me late in the evening sending a rather huge presentation that I had to get out for work. And reception staff this summer was even fully trilingual. Also, given the hotel is just 2 streets down from the beach, you’re very comfortably close to the sea but can just as well get a rest from the ‘touristy’ scene. Last but not least, the hotel is right there as part of the little ‘village’ of excellent Courtoisville shopping, within just a few steps offering up a supermarket and a pharmacy, a bakery and a ‘bar tabac’, several delicatessen shops - also perfect for buying foodie gifts - and the up-and-coming Bistro, where a talented chef just opened: We ate there twice already and are sure that once word of mouth spreads, he’ll have excellent reviews.

My husband and I stayed at the Brit Hotel Le Surcouf in St. Malo 4 Feb, 2013. We enjoyed our stay at this hotel so much, that we re-booked the hotel again for our last night in France. The room we stayed in was very clean and quiet. We had a flat screen TV and was able to pick up both the BBC and USA-Today. The bathroom was wonderfully clean with plenty of fresh towels and heat.

What made our stay even more special was the staff. The husband and wife team who manage the hotel are friendly, helpful and gracious. They are both more than happy to assist with directions and recommendations, and they speak English pretty well. We found that the Brit Hotel Le Surcouf is near stores and restaurants, and the walled city is less than a half a mile away. I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to visit St. Malo and look forward to staying there again next year.

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at the "Surcouf" and I must admit being very impressed. Our double room was a good size, comfortable and well equipped, the bed was incredibly comfortable ( which sadly is rarer than it should be, the pillows soft and beddings soft and cool. Our bathroom was a good size with a proper full size bath ( much appreciated )with plenty of space for toiletries and the towels of good quality too. The whole room was spotlessly clean and quite frankly for the price I feel we got a real bargain in the almost high season, in St Malo. Intra Muros is about five minutes drive, the beach is only five minutes away and Parame is a nice little suburb with all the shops you might need such as Boulangeries, Pharmacies and even a little Carrefour.

All in all I think any traveller looking for a comfy, convenient and very clean place to stay in this beautiful city could do a lot worse. Yes the street can be a little noisy ( it is a city for goodness sake, what do people expect ????) but from our personal experience only from about 6/7 am and nothing too bad at all, the occasional truck and a few cars. Hardly a big problem. Night time was extremely quiet. We found the after hours automatic access also very convenient.

Basically I would say the Hotel had thought about issues carefully and ensured as efficient and comfy a stay as possible.

We enjoyed our stay, the staff was friendly and helpful and we shall most definitely stay at this Brit Hotel again next time we visit St Malo.

Francais :

I came to Saint Malo hoping to have a quick, relaxing get-away. Instead I had such a terrible experience with this hotel that it severely put a damper on my weekend.
To begin with, there is absolutely no security at night other than a thin glass door with no physical person to keep an eye on the property beginning around 8:30pm!! The breakfast, which is expensive for what they offer, was pathetic. There was practically nothing left to eat 45 min before the end of the breakfast time slot with only one couple having breakfast when I arrived (can't say that they were too busy to make sure that there was fresh fruit, milk, bread etc. available!!) The room I had smelled musty and of mildew (I had to leave the window open during my absence during the day which made me nervous considering the lack of security). Something strange happened to one of the walls as a small portion of one wall was poorly painted a different color than the rest of the room making it look unkept and decrepit. Why they couldn't just use the same color is beyond me. The television didn't work except for 2 channels which weren't even the local ones that I needed to have a proper weather report! The only amenity they give is shower gel. No drinking water, no individual hand soap, nothing. The toilet paper are tiny individual sheets and the toilet seat cover didn't stay up easily which meant that it needed to be held while using the facilities. The walls are incredibly thin so you hear everything around you. Twice I thought someone was trying to get into my room as the sound of the key going into the door next to mine was so loud. I was woken both mornings by noise in the hallway (which consisted simply of people walking in the halls and opening their doors).
Overall there are many other 3 star hotels in Saint Malo that are properly concieved with proper service and ammenities. Honestly, don't bother coming to this hotel, it's sincerely not worth it even if it means paying a little bit more elsewhere!!

I stayed with friends at this hotel for 2 nights. When I made reservations on the phone I was told that the price of 2 rooms was of 60 euro each. When we arrived one room was 70 euro instead. The reason being it was a "king" size bed. In fact, the double has a very small bed and the "king" is like a double in the USA. The owner was very nasty when discussing this issue and I ended up having to pay his new price. I did not want to ruin my vacation for 10 euros. The rooms were very small and the lights for reading in bed were very high up, so one can not read in bed without disturbing their bed mate. For breakfast you will get as many pieces of bread as there are guests: everything seems carefully counted: at about 7 euros it is not convenient. This hotel was a very bad experience for all of us.

Booked this hotel based on the positive comments on this website and was a bit disappointed - rather brought back to reality - as this hotel is what can be expected from a 2-star hotel in France, nothing more, nothing less. The room was rather small and of average quality, same as the bathroom. Breakfast with little choice so we mostly skipped it.
Location and neighborhood is ok though, walled town in walking distance across the lovely beach promenade.

Knew nothing much about St Malo except we were picking up a car hire at the ferry port.
Arrived 6p.m. at night to a friendly host who had not cancelled our booking despite our pre credit card having a fault due to mistyping error- fixed up no problems and took the lift to our clean and pleasant room. Walked 3 km along the beach into St Malo though we could have taken a local bus, these were not frequent.
Local restaurant, La Hoguette (with an entertaining magician host) was very good, reasonable and close to the hotel so we had a very pleasant 2 night stay with a good breakfast. St Malo is laid back place and the hosts here were very kind to us. Recommended if you want a reasonable, pleasant place to stay in a lovely part of the world.

We stayed one night at Brit Hotel Le Surcouf. We arrived by train to St Malo, and walked to the hotel. Unfortunately, the reception was closed (2 pm) and we were unable to leave our bags to explore the city. It reopened at 3:30 pm. Our room was clean and quiet. The room temperature is not controlled within the room, which could be a problem at times, and the shower is one of the smallest we have encountered. For our purposes, it was okay, I don't think I would want to spend a week in that particular accommodation. A breakfast was available, but we did not take it. The front desk staff was exceptionally friendly.

Dear, The Reception open time is indicate in your confirmation mail, The best is to contact us if you plan to arrive before, we can delivered to you the code to access your room, and proceed the check in later. This is usefull and common for both. The warm weather this year in france, and high temperature lead us to delay turn on the heating 24/24, just in the morning. Additonaly we have some electric heater but as first point, just asking. We have bigger room than standard one, for long stay and more confortable stay, it's your choice, Thanks for your feedback, and hope see you again. Don't hesiate to warn us about your arrival time.
