Great location and clean. However no tea coffee making facilities in the room and no air conditioning. The room was decent and clean but there was a peculiar smell throughout the hotel, I’m presuming from the drainage system. It was hot when we went and no air con meant having the windows open which being very central in the old town means you get a lot of street noise at night. There is no parking at the hotel, indeed throughout the day in the old town no street parking and the car parks are very pricey. We used the Paul Feval park and ride so got the bus back and forth from the town €3 per day. Not a bad hotel if you want basic, clean and central.

De l'Univers is in a great location - intra muros, right by the ramparts, close to the sea, in the middle of wonderful restaurants and other attractions. There is parking close by, within a few minutes walk, but not right by the hotel - this would be impossible, as it's in a pedestrian area. We enjoyed our stay. The room and en suite bathroom was quite small, basic and not very modern. So small that I couldn't open the window all the way without hitting the bed. But clean, comfortable, and perfectly adequate to sleep in. The breakfast was quite alright, although also quite basic. But it gave us all we wanted - somewhere to stay right in the old town, to use as a base for sight-seeing and dining. It is cheaper than many other hotels in the same location.

A great hotel in a perfect location. The hotel rooms themselves are a little dated but the hotel is perfect for anyone who likes to be able to sit and enjoy a drink outside. It is inside the walls and a short walk to the beaches. It is also in a prime location for restaurants options and shopping. We had a great time with family.

This was my 3rd visit, and regret my last. The receptionist was not at all welcoming. Arriving at 10am, our room would not be ready until 3pm. The room was spartan, and did not smell fresh, the approach landing smelt of tobacco. There was minimum storage, all open. The selection of towels was small, in size and range, in fact we had better on Brittany Ferries overnight. There 3 small pillows, for 2 people. The door handle to the bathroom was very loose, all 4 screws loose. No extraction ventilation in the bathroom. No coffee or tea in the room, and when we asked the receptionist, and offered to pay told this impossible. ( We subsequently saw Breakfast trays outside other rooms) No privacy labels on doors to allow sleep in. No Local information available anywhere in the hotel.

If you are going to stay at this hotel make sure you ask for a quiet room away from all the noise. I was in a room looking out to the castle at the front of the hotel and have never in my many years of extensive travelling, had such a noisy room. Revelry went on till the early hours of the morning and once all patrons had gone, the noise of packing the tables, chairs and umbrellas away by the staff continued to well after 2am. Then it starts up all over again around 7am when putting them all out again. So avoid Rooms 202 and 102 which being over the bar area had to contend with music emanating from the bar as well as all the outside noise.
Even with the windows closed the noise was still very intrusive. Because there is no air-conditioning and due to it being summer I needed to have my windows open to get some air.

We had booked a triple room at the Hôtel de l'Univers in Saint-Malo at the end of August. Ideally located on Place Chateaubriand, the establishment is very pleasant with its large glass roof and its continental buffet. The Triple room is equipped with a double bed and a real single bed. The volumes are pleasant and we appreciated the small bottles of water when we arrived in the room. Our room faced the street but we had no noise pollution and the room price was reasonable. I recommend this hotel because it is good value for money.

We stayed here for the last night of our holiday before getting the ferry home, Unfortunately, it was a complete disaster and I am further disappointed and upset that no one has responded to my online complaints.
I have sent two messages to the manager and not yet had a response.
Our room was clean and basic but very dark. However, it was not cheap - we were right over the bar and it was so noisy no one could sleep. It was also so hot that we had to sleep with the window open. When i asked for a fan no one could help me depsite my obvious distress that it was 11pm and my young children could not sleep.
this room should never have been sold for this price (220 euro) or indeed as a family room.
I do hope the manager will finally respond to this.

The good-Great location in the walled city (the Intra-Muros which is the fun old area you want to stay in when visiting St. Malo in my view, although you could stay along the water which would be nice too). Room 107 was very spacious for a family of 4. Great to have 3 separate beds. The twin and sofa beds had nice memory foam type mattress toppers that made them more comfortable. This room was really spacious and clean as was the huge bathroom. The housekeeping did a terrific job. The price was low compared to other hotels. The room didn’t smell of tobacco (but see below on the lobby and just out front of the hotel).

The bad-The other big bed appeared to be 2 twin beds put together with no memory foam topper and made my back really hurt. They definitely need to upgrade those mattresses or put memory foam toppers on it. The biggest problem with this hotel as other reviewers have said is the amount of tobacco smoke from the outside restaurant right in front of it that permeates right into the lobby check in area. People were literally smoking right at the tables close to the front door. We couldn’t leave the room windows open due to all the smoking outside. You could smell it in the hallway and stairs. The keycards kept getting deactivated so we had to get them re-activated. We didn’t see a water bottle re-fill station so my husband asked the lady at the bar for some water to fill up his bottle, and while she filled it up, there was definitely attitude. Adding a purified water filling station to the lobby would greatly reduce plastic bottle waste (and micro plastics). The breakfast for 15 euros a person was not as nice as others we’ve had so we bought breakfast at the bakery on the corner for significantly less. Finally, for families and travelers, they really need to add a mini fridge, coffee maker, and electric kettle. Not sure where parents would put baby food if they needed to refrigerate it. These are pretty standard items for most hotels that we have stayed at. My son only ate half his sandwich and it spoiled by morning as we had no fridge to put it in.
If health is a consideration, due to the smell of tobacco smoke in the lobby, stairs and hall, and area right out front with smokers, I would recommend another hotel. I did my best to hold my breath to not breathe in the tobacco smoke when entering the hotel, but since you have to move through the smoke to get into the hotel, it was not good for me or the family.

I recently stayed at the Hotel L'Univers in Room 415. Centrally located in the old town it's in a great position. However, it all started to go down hill when I woke up in the morning to find my bed was crawling with bed bugs (punaise de lit) and blood stains on the sheets from where they had been feasting on me over night. I was alarmed and immediately went down to reception to report the situation. I had to convince one of the staff to come up and confirm this was the case, which they did. At this point the alarm bells should have started ringing. No advice was given to us as to what we should do, so we decided upon ourselves to quickly bag up our luggage and leave the room and hotel as quickly as we could. Not the leisurely Sunday morning that we had envisaged nor indeed had paid for. I asked the duty manager as we left that I would like the hotel to refund us for the nights stay, as it certainly was not an experience you would want, let alone to pay for. She said that I had to contact the hotel manager, which I did as soon as we got home. They have since refused to refund us any money saying that it's not the "fault of the establishment".

I completely understand that these things happen in the hotelier trade, however, I would also expect that no guest would actually have to pay for the privilege of sleeping in a bed full of bed bugs. My skin still crawls thinking of it!! They are now completely ignoring me which again shines a light what scant regard they have for their paying clientele. This hotel is one to definitely avoid.

This hotel is good only if you’re a partier and a smoker and want somewhere to crash after a night in the bars. It is just above its own bar, the entire place (up to 4th floor) reeks of smoke, it’s noisy, the walls are paper thin, the woman at the front desk wears a permanent scowl. There’s nothing good except the location but saint Malo is small, everything is close by. Just awful
