Detailed Reviews
Hotel has an excellent location and that's what you pay for.
It's located right next to the main entrance of the inner walls, on a busy square with lots of lovely restaurants.
The hotel itself is decent, and some renovations have been done (mainly in the main areas), but depending on which room you get, it might be a 'more renovated' room or not (if I compare pictures I saw online with the room we got). Our room had a partial bathroom renovation, with new faucet and shower, but was covered in very weird 70's-like linoleum from top to floor, so not sure if they renovated the walls too.
There is also carpet all over the floor that feels like it's been there forever, giving it an old, dusty feeling.
The bed wasn't large, 140cm wide, but mattrass comfortable.
There was no ventilation or a/c in the room, making it fairly hot during the night. Depending on which room you get, you can't open your windows, because the hotel is located next to a busy square.
I can't comment on the breakfast or lunch/dinner options, since that was to be paid extra.
We saw a lot of people struggling with their car and parking space, so if the hotel offers parking, it's not at the hotel itself and I'm not sure it's free either, as all intra-muros parking needs to be paid.
TIP: park your car of the Paul Feval parking (for 3,30€ per day) and take the free shuttle to the intra-muros bus stop. It's barely a 3 minute walk to the hotel.
Overall: decent hotel for a night over in a prime location

Reservation made for my 80 years old mother for 9 nights: she is still there but we have enough hindsight to write this very positive review of her experience: already before her arrival the reception was very accommodating since when I worried about the future location above the square, very noisy, they kindly changed its location on the ramparts side, on the 2nd floor: certainly view of tourists who wander but:
-the thin veil on the window makes ramparts we see NOTHING in the room (we tested;-))
- yes the view is less spectacular than on the upper floors but the sea view is there, as well as that of the national fort (impregnable!) and magnificent sunsets and sunrises...
So this is a beautiful icing on the cake that my mother never tires of:)
In addition, spacious room (252), well equipped with a large comfortable bed and a HUGE TV: for an elderly person and in full JO it is very appreciated!
Yes, the cleaning service may only come on request but for her who loves her privacy it is perfect!
The room is very well soundproofed, when you close it you hear NOTHING: those who say it is simple glazing probably let themselves be taken by the wood of the windows, but you can distinguish very well the double glazing behind.
Bathroom and toilet (separate) nickel, convenient elevator and gargantuan Breakfast. For me if I compare with the other proposals at the same time, an excellent Value for Award. Thank you to all the smiling and accommodating team

To put this review into context, we have been visiting the hotel since 1998. In all this time never has anyone ever said ‘welcome back, nice to see you again’! We went back simply because it is the best place to stay in St Malo. £988 for four nights in room 453 a superior sea facing room, breakfast and parking included. Get a parking space (they put you up in an adjacent hotel Le Cite) - book it in advance the €12 per day is money well spent. The room we had is large, nicely furnished with a kingly king sized bed plus sofa bed so good for a family. Separate loo and nice bathroom and shower. First time we used the shower it flooded the bathroom. The shower trap had not been cleaned in months so we called housekeeping who came up promptly to deyuckify the place! Breakfast was always a treat for us but to be honest this time the whole thing seemed to be chaotic and not very well run. The coffee machines needed descaling and were always on the blink. The food provided was excellent just a shame about the staff members who really couldn’t give a fig about their guests. All this said, we will come back again because we prefer faded grandeur in a hotel to corporate blandness. Give this old girl a twirl - and check out the New Years menu in the hotel which was produced in 1912!

Booked this for a special birthday celebration based on the excellent reviews. Booked a sea view room via booking.com. When we arrived were given a comfort double. The room was really disappointing. Very dated and tired. Bathroom had mould on the seals. The receptionist was understanding and did her utmost to help. She did offer a better room (at additional cost) and whilst the room was bigger and brighter -it was still was very tired. The rooms shown on the website are not a true representation. Wanted to love this place but it really needs an upgrade. We had a lovely meal in the restaurant at a reasonable price.

We just stayed here for 2 nights and overall, had a great time. The hotel is probably the best hotel in St Malo for location as it’s along the outer edges of the old town making it slightly quieter and prettier. It’s also bang on top of one of the most stunning beaches we’ve ever seen. Parking is available through the hotel for 15€ a day, but it’s actually just outside the old town walls, which isn’t far to be fair. As we managed to get a space right outside the hotel, we opted to pay for this instead which was €25 for the day, which you can pay for through the PayByPhone app. You only need to pay between 9am and 8pm so we just topped up as and when needed.
The hotel itself was very nice, the room was clean, the sofa bed had been made up already for the kids which was great, and the bathroom (bath and walk in shower) were very nice too. We had an incredible 4th floor sea view room which was the icing on the cake. My husband did spot a burn mark on the sheets though and a mark on the duvet which was poor for an expensive hotel like this.
Overall we loved St Malo and this hotel was an excellent base for everything we wanted to do here. We didn’t eat there but had some cocktails in the bar which were just ok - the woman making them was so rude when I simply asked for another glass for the pornstar martini which she’d served me warm in a tumbler. The male waiter wasn’t much better. Reception staff were great though and very quick & professional.

I really enjoyed my long weekend in St Malo at this hotel. I was so exhausted from touring other cities in France, I wanted a place to relax and just enjoy the scenery. From my room at hotel Chateaubriand, I could open large double windows and enjoy the view of the water. Great location where you can walk to all the restaurants and shops in the old town. You can walk there from the train station depending on your mobility and how much luggage you have; it was about a 20-25 minutes walk from the train station to the hotel.
Near the hotel, I passed a casino, but that’s not really my thing. I found St Malo to be very pretty, very relaxing, appeared as if everyone there was also on vacation and just wanted to have a good time.
When I arrived at the hotel, my room was ready, I found the hotel to be very quaint, very cute. I really liked my room, very functional and comfortable. If you only want modern decor and very updated, this may not be right for you, but I thought it was great. Checkout was efficient and polite. If you’re not already aware, St Malo can get very windy, and a bit chilly as the sun starts to set, and I was there in August. This was perfect for me, exactly the type of weather and the type of hotel I was looking for. If I go back to St Malo, I would stay here again.

Very good service, setting, location, services, bilingual staff, etc. What more can I say except to encourage you to go there. St Malo benefits from being discovered as well as its surroundings, Mt St Michel, etc.
Continue to preserve this exceptional site through its cleanliness, its shops, restaurants, its pancakes or crepes, or even both in order to embody a high-end French service.

First the good. You could not ask for a better location! Near the tourism office, so many restaurants, shops, beach, etc. The building and main areas are so interesting and full of character. Breakfast was included and they offer a very good variety of hot and cold breakfast items (eggs, bacon, sausage, cereal, breads and pastries, fruit, etc).
Now the not so good. We got interconnected rooms for a family of 5. It’s not great… and is borderline bad. I’ve lost count of the number of holes in the sheets and blankets, stains on towels and walls, etc. There was a puddle in the bathroom when we came in. I told the front desk but nobody ever came. There is no AC so everything smells mouldy and stuffy. The smaller room doesn’t have a window so we can’t try to get the smell out or let some cool, fresh air in. The other room has a fantastic window overlooking the main square but when we open it, the room fills up with flies. The carpets are definitely worn. So between the smell, the worn out parts and the holes in the bedding… I think it’s clean but it’s kind of hard to tell. There’s even a tile missing from the ceiling above the shower.
Overall kind of disappointed and underwhelmed.

Check in was fine. Room smelled stale so we had to keep balcony doors open - we were at front of hotel under flags which was cool but also very noisy because all the restaurants are directly below. We soon discovered that the heating/cooling system was broken - hence the temporary heater placed in the room. Our room had a wardrobe but no dresser/nothing with drawers. Only 5 hangers in closet so majority of our clothes had to sit on floor of wardrobe. No real shower in bathroom, just a handheld sprayer that leaked and sprayed water everywhere. Kettle in room but no coffee. My sister who was in a different room had a Nespresso coffee maker so I asked front desk if I could have one. They told me they didn’t have one, sent up some instant Nescafé instead. Sheets were very old and torn in places. This hotel looks great from the outside/public areas but inside is desperately in need of an update. I would not stay here again.

Arrive early for breakfast!
We arrived 9h00 AM and some basic items available were not replaced: baguette and scramble eggs. Curious to know eggs were available to boil but not to prepare scramble eggs anymore.
Hotel location is great. Rooms and common areas have been renovated. Room is contemporary and showers are great. Elevators make it easy to carry luggage to the rooms
PS: while write the review, we got baguettes

I’m not sure - it was part of our package. Generally, breakfast in France is quite expensive and very variable. Chateaubriand breakfast is very good.
Sorry for this late reply. Yes, there is an elevator in this hotel.
