The Midland hotel offers a blend of historic charm and modern amenities, with many guests appreciating its central location in Manchester. While some travelers find the rooms comfortable and well-equipped, others raise concerns about size, noise, and maintenance. The atmosphere is generally welcoming, but noise levels from outside disturbances can impact sleep quality.
Opinions on service and value are split, with some praising the staff's attentiveness and others questioning the cost relative to the experience. Cleanliness is a strong point, though the hotel's amenities receive mixed reviews regarding spa access and breakfast options.

The hotel clearly has significant history and is an impressive structure from the outside. The rooms are quite small (even smaller than some London hotels) and not modern. They would benefit from both a total refresh and even basic upkeep (such as new caulk over molded areas in the bathroom). Cleanliness was a bit below average with corners clearly not vacuumed in a while. The inner courtyard view was very quiet. Sleep was not great with a somewhat weak A/C and an especially bulky/heavy comforter. Wifi was reliable and fast.
The location is very convenient in terms of walking around Manchester and also next to a tram stop. It also gets a lot of convention business due to its location. The breakfast was very good with multiple hot and cold options, including a nice fruit selection.
Overall, the location and breakfast are nice but the rooms really need updating.

Not sure if I pulled the short straw but my experience at The Midland Hotel wasn't a 4 star experience. The Hotel is clearly short of staff due to the poor cleanliness of the hotel and very slow service. My room was tired and worn which had peeling wallpaper, dirty carpets, damaged bathroom tiles and to top it all off stains on my bathroom towel!
I had booked the Spa package which included a light lunch between 2pm and 6pm. 2 of us had spa treatments at 3pm and 2 at 4pm therefore a light lunch at 2pm when we arrive suited us. We sat down at exactly 2pm and our food didn't come out until 2:45pm... Not sure why it took 45 minutes to make a salad and 3 chicken burgers (which were slightly cold) but this then delayed myself and sister for our spa treatment which was then cut short by a good 20 minutes due to the very poor service, this was clearly not my fault for being late...
2 out of the 3 main lifts were working and this caused HAVOC! When the lift finally reached your floor it was full and no joke we waited 10 minutes for one to come that we could fit in. Couldn't use the stairs due to an injury.
Upon checkout we did receive a 25% refund to one of the rooms however, this experience effected all 4 of us. Safe to say this hotel needs a lot of work to maintain its tired rooms and hallways. Defiantly not a 4 star hotel and wont be returning anytime soon.

Josephine provided a warm welcome. When we arrived in the (Executive King) room the air con unit which was attached to the window wasn’t sealed properly creating a gap letting draft through. The wardrobe was too small which didn’t allow me to fit me wedding dress in or much of anything else considering the size of the room. My partner went down to raise this and they were very receptive. Josephine located Jade, the manager, who upgraded the room with no questions asked- a welcomed gesture as we were there for our wedding. The Elemis cosmetics were a brilliant perk of fantastic quality, the bed was comfortable, the room was clean and kitted out with still, sparkling water as well as slippers and robes. A little cold though and the thermostat didn’t seem to allow you to adjust it. A nice feature was the spacious shower and the free standing bath. The living space was an excellent area for the brides ‘first look’, photos or general leisure. The room does require curtain holders as it is not well lit. There was nothing to hold the curtain back to allow more light in which could be problematic for brides doing their makeup. We were surprised to receive a noise complaint from a security guard and who I assume was concierge in the evening as we were chatting at a normal level? Although we were told there was a spa we had no idea that it was free!? I think this is something that reception should be leading with and should be made clearer (unless I missed it) upon booking. Overall a this is a beautiful hotel, in a fantastic location. Market Street and Deansgate a stone throw away allowing for a vast array of options for shopping and dining. I look forward to returning soon.

After attending a show at the Opera House, my wife, daughter, and I visited The Midland Hotel for drinks and light refreshments. Unfortunately, the experience fell far below the standards one would expect from a hotel with such a renowned reputation.
We ordered fresh mint tea and food. Initially, the waitress seemed unsure if they could even serve fresh mint, but later confirmed they could. However, what was presented as "mint tea" turned out to be simply hot water with mint leaves – no tea. When we queried this, the waitress dismissively stated, "That’s how we serve mint tea." Her tone was condescending, and her attitude lacked any semblance of customer service.
A hotel of this calibre should certainly know how to prepare and serve a proper mint tea. While I could overlook the use of basic ceramic tea cups instead of glassware, the absence of tea leaves was astonishing. Eventually, we were begrudgingly offered a single breakfast tea bag to share between us, which only added to the disappointment.
The accompanying food was average at best, but what truly left a sour taste was the lack of professionalism and attention to detail. For a hotel that prides itself on culinary excellence and impeccable service, this was an embarrassing letdown.
As someone who once associated The Midland with tradition and quality, tonight’s experience was deeply disappointing. It’s a stark reminder that reputation alone is no guarantee of excellence.

I’ve been coming to this hotel for 40 years initially for afternoon tea then spent my wedding night here 30+ years ago and staying yearly since. This time was by far the worst. Originally booked a standard double room (room only) (in Aug 2024) for an Eric Cantana show in February then realised some months later I could stay in an executive king room with breakfast cheaper so cancelled and rebooked. Checked in went to the executive king room on 6th floor to find it dark and rather small. In the eaves so had a portion of the room blocked off. The curtain would not fully open. It had 2 uncomfortable tub chairs but you couldn’t see the TV from them. Use of bath robes these were scrunched up on a shelf in the wardrobe not neatly folded as in other hotels. Anyway spent the evening out returning to the bar area this got colder as the night went on. On returning to a freezing cold room with climate control that would not go beyond 18 degrees. Had to have a hot show er prior to bed to get warm. Next morning reported this to reception for the girl to gush apologies and claim maintenance will sort it out well they didn’t. Getting ready to go out realised no decent light in the room to put makeup on the bathroom had no magnifying mirror or hooks to hang up dressing gowns. All in all a poor show for an executive room. Not all the plugs or USB outlets worked. We had to chase housekeeping to clean the room then again to get water. In the bar area staff would approach before actually sitting down requesting orders for drinks or food yet when asked to give us a couple of minutes they didn’t appear again. Decided to have lunch on Saturday and chose the sourdough chicken club sandwich which was basically 2 chicken filets with a fried egg on top with 1 slice of bacon (it was supposed to be pancetta) mayo, lettuce leaf and tomato but it came on FRIED sourdough totally inedible and not very warm and not what I was expecting from a club sandwich. Disappointed not to be able to use the spa unless you book it then only if it’s not busy 8.30am was available. Or you could book a 50 minutes treatment there was a time when you could use it but it would appear it’s another money making venture to get people in forgetting the hotel guests. The Spa was a draw for myself and many others well not anymore.

We stayed 23rd,24th & 25th December taking advantage of the hotels Christmas package, which is really good value for money. Our room was really good, one grumble was lack of natural light and having very dim lighting in the room did become a bit of an issue at times! (Mezzanine Level) Food was amazing couldn’t fault it. Being Christmas I felt it could have been more Christmasy for example some form of entertainment in the bar area of an evening i.e pianist playing Xmas music /carols. The same with Christmas Day dinner it would have been nice. Christmas crackers would have been a nice touch also felt strange without them present. I felt that Christmas dinner could have been served in the FRENCH restaurant and not in the same dining hall that you had breakfast in as it didn’t feel any different. Bar staff seemed very stressed and at times very grumpy waiting times for drink at the bar or table service was at times too long a wait. Afternoon tea was lovely all staff were so attentive and very professional, my only issue was that you felt rushed ( however you are aware that you have an allocated time slot) As a guest you are given 1 hour free use of the spa make sure you book it when you check in and use it, it is small but lovely. It just blows my mind that a family thought it was ok to sit in the jacuzzi the whole hour which prevented you being able to use it ! Overall lovely stay and would definitely stay here again as it is such a central location, and the hotel is beautiful.

My wife booked this as a Birthday treat for the 15th September and we stayed in room 324, booking in was very easy and pleasant, the room was spacious and very clean also as the room wasn’t facing the front it was so quiet.
She booked in advance for the evening meal and I have to say the food was just average and certainly not worth a premium just because we ate in the hotel restaurant.
We stayed in the bar area for a few hours in the evening and it had a very relaxing vibe which is what you need, unfortunately they do not have a great choice of bottled lager though.
Upon returning to our room we noticed that the air conditioning does not work properly and the windows do not unlock due to health and safety (the sticker on the window said this). We also tried for a good hour to turn the TV off but to no avail and after two trips to reception and multiple remote controls they came up to the room after 1.30am and just disconnected the TV.
We have decided that we want to try the hotel one more time so have rebooked for the 13th October as part of our anniversary (fingers crossed)

Dear Bolton21, Thank you for your review of your most recent stay at The Midland Manchester Hotel! I would like to thank you for your comments regarding the room and its cleanliness. I am sorry to hear about the experience in our Food & Beverage venues and the overall aftertaste that did not leave you satisfied. I have made our Venue Director and Executive Chef aware, who will look into your feedback closely. Please accept our apologies for the problem with the Air Conditioning system in your bedroom. I have also forwarded your feedback regarding the TV to our maintenance team, so that they provide a solution. I would like to thank you for choosing us again, for such a special occasion, as well as assure you that we will take all the necessary steps to create a moment you would look back on very fondly. Lovely hotel and location sadly let down by its own staff, upon arrival we received an extremely friendly welcome and check in, the reception was busy but efficient in checking in, after that it all went pretty cold, my wife and I had been gifted a Spa and dinner package which was not cheap by any means, we found it difficult to pre book spa treatments so upon arrival asked what was available to get told nothing until after our check out time the following day, the staff lacked empathy or any kind of compassion, however we still used the spa, little dated and run down and the men’s changing room was a mess when I arrived and still the same when I left, shower gel off the wall with a screw hanging out, towel and slippers left all over the floor even a random pair of boxers.
After the spa we went back to the room to change for dinner, it became apparent the aircon wasn’t working so I called reception, they advised they would get some one up to have a look ????? Still waiting which made it a long, warm and very uncomfortable night.
The Mount restaurant was very very disappointing, the food was good but the service was extremely poor, having to ask several times for the same thing and the music was banging like a rock show with acoustics guitars blasting out.
Again when we returned to the room I ordered some Drinks for the room, 40 mins later I chased them to be told I hadn’t ordered ???
Not the best experience or what you would expect.

Dear KellyM796, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. I'm truly sorry to hear about the disappointing aspects of your recent stay, especially given that it was meant to be a special occasion for you and your wife. While I’m glad to hear that your initial welcome and check-in experience were positive, it’s clear that we fell short in several areas afterward, and for that, I sincerely apologize. It’s disheartening to learn that your attempts to book spa treatments were met with a lack of empathy and that the spa facilities were not up to standard, especially in the men’s changing rooms. This is not the level of service or environment we strive to provide. I’m also sorry that your experience in the Mount Restaurant did not meet your expectations, both in terms of service and atmosphere. The issues with the air conditioning in your room, and the delay in receiving your drinks order, added to what should have been a relaxing and enjoyable stay. Please know that we take your comments seriously, and I’ll be sharing them with our management team to ensure that these issues are addressed and rectified. We understand that your experience did not live up to the standards we aim to maintain, and I apologize for the inconvenience and discomfort you experienced as a result. Thank you again for your feedback, and I hope to hear from you soon. Dimitris Gioldasis Guest Relations Manager

My fiance booked this for my 30th birthday and its such a beautiful hotel. As soon as you walk in the smell is amazing its smells so fresh and expensive. The staff were so friendly and helpful. We were in room 228 which was a standard king room. The bed was huge a so comfy. The room was very spacious it had elemis shampoo, conditioner and shower gel which smelt amazing. As it was my 30th they put a few bits in the room such as rose petals and a little dessert which was such a lovley touch. They had bathrobes and slippers in the room too aswell as a nespresso machine, kettle, iron, ironing board and hairdryer. We also order breakfast for room service which was a £7.00 tray charge but totally worth it. Overall this hotel was amazing and we will definatly be coming back.

Our second stay at this hotel was hard to fault - other than a billing error which was rectified without issues we really enjoyed our stay. Alongside the location, the biggest plus point of this hotel is the soul and character that comes with its history - and you can feel that throughout the property - it's a big Edwardian hotel with loads of rooms, loads of event suites, massive staircases and a grand atrium. The rooms are generously sized and whilst some are a little tired, the value for money is still there with the overall feeling of the place. Staff were friendly, breakfast was tasty, the spa was a nice bonus and the cocktails were good. The atrium bar is a nice place for a drink at the start of the night. Overall a very good stay and we'd return.

Yes it is currently the same. This is only due to occupancy, not covid related. As the hotel is very large they use this reservation process. I have stayed 5 times and have been able to get a slot upon check in that suited us every time.
There are more places to choose from in the Manchester area.
