Of my three weeks in Ireland, Petra House was the best stay by far. It has everything. It is of the highest quality across the board, and has the most fantastic customer service. The staff is incredibly kind, helpful, friendly, and make it their priority to see you are the absolute most comfortable you can be. Oh, and the breakfast! The best breakfast! I highly recommend!
We loved Petra House! Our room was great and very well appointed - so very comfy and cosy. The bathroom was on the smallish size, but it was large enough to work for us. We had a view of the rear garden from our room. The B&B is obviously well cared for - very clean and the breakfast was over the top! Frank and Joan could not have been more welcoming. We were about a 10-15 minute walk to town and parking was provided on site. Would definitely return!
My husband and I stayed 2 nights at Petra House and thoroughly enjoyed it and as others said, we didn't want to leave! Our eldest daughter had stayed there and assured us that we would love the B&B and the hosts, and we most certainly did! We were warmly greeted by Frank, who after a brief time mentioned "three little birds had been concerned we would be late arriving..." at which point I looked questioningly at him and replied, "the only three little birds we know are our kids?" Frank had been kind enough to have been emailing back and forth with our 3 young, adult children, who had splurged on a Michelin-rated dinner for us (early anniversary gift), and Frank was in on the planning and ensuring we got to the restaurant on time! Thanks for that, Frank--you made that evening and our stay so very special. The house is beautiful--my memory fails me and I can't remember if Joan and Frank had it built, or if they just did lots of renos. But Joan definitely did all the elegant decorating and had handy Frank do lots of things all around the home. It is such an elegant, yet welcoming home. It feels happy and lived in. Our room was beautiful and overlooked the equally lovely garden. A few houses down is a soccer stadium(?), but there weren't any events on while we were there. I loved looking out the window both mornings to admire the garden and hear the birds. Joan has wonderful taste and the good-sized room was impeccably decorated. Beautiful bed and bathroom linens, a lovely desk/table where we enjoyed complimentary tea and cookies, and a beautiful washroom. We slept so well on their bed and it was quiet; they also had some magazines for us to enjoy. The breakfasts are to die for! We loved them and there is so much food and it's home-cooked by Joan and served with a smile and charm by Frank. The potato waffles were amazing as was everything else. And you're sitting in a lovely dining room appointed just as per 5 star restaurants with beautiful tablecloths, cutlery, place settings, flowers...the whole nine yards. It was fine dining for breakfast! And those were the best breakfasts we had in Ireland--thank you! Frank gives such great recommendations and he was so very helpful. At our 1st breakfast we chatted with a family from Boston and we learned that, like us, they had an early departure the next morning. I suggested they ask Frank for a "breakfast doggie bag", as we had. They said Frank had actually offered to serve breakfast earlier than usual for them and we ended up with the same offer. It was SO kind of Joan and Frank to get up considerably earlier to accommodate us--we had the full breakfast again and would've like to have savoured it more, but had to eat relatively fast. I still salivate at the thought of those breakfasts! People have commented on what a great location Petra House is to the downtown core. It is on a busy street, but we didn't hear the traffic at all. Supermarkets abound so easy to buy convenience items and snacks. I have to mention that despite the house looking so wonderful and our rooms looking, literally, like new--that Frank mentioned that every year, at the end of their B&B season, they strip the house down and repaint all the walls!! I can't believe they do that. And apparently, last year they'd completely gutted and redone all the ensuite washrooms. Joan and Frank, thank you kindly for your hospitality, wonderful and warm welcome, the amazing breakfasts, all your suggestions, making and serving us that yummy breakfast so early when we had to drive back to Dublin, and for being stellar and outstanding hosts! Without a doubt, we would stay at Petra House again if we return. And we're sorry you don't open up at Christmas time because we can only imagine the incredible decorating, festivities and food you'd serve at that time. Your lucky kids and grandkids get that privilege. We also apologize for writing the review 2 months late, but a week after we returned home, my (Christina's) mom passed away so we've been very busy. Thank you again for everything and wishing you all the best! Come visit us in Vancouver if you're ever in town! Warmly, Christina Y-L and Michael L (Vancouver, BC, Canada)…
They both made our three night stay a joy. The house is comfy, and the breakfasts were great, with Joan's scones especially. Both were very helpful with advice for us to get the most out of our stay in this one-of-a-kind city. The B&B is on a main road but we didn't notice any noise. It was on top of the hill and a short easy walk to the core of Galway.
Petra House is immaculately clean and charmingly decorated. Frank and Joan are warm hosts, providing good advice and delicious food. Joan even graciously gives out cards with the recipes for her scones (delish!) and brown bread (didn't try because I ate too many scones.) The breakfast is generously portioned so you won't likely need lunch. The parking is a bit tight (it's directly in front of the building) but there is some free street parking. This is a perfect location for a pleasant walk to Quay Street and other sights.
