The main house has kept the features of a planter's bungalow: wooden floor boards, high ceilings and a wide veranda. The garden is beautiful, as is the view. There are walks, and places of interest in the area. Kandy (with the Temple of the Tooth relic, and the Peradeniya Gardens) is one hour's drive away.
A group of us came for lunch which was so delicious - eight curries and two types of rice. After a seven kms walk, we did it justice!
There is also a swimming pool. The host and hostess are generous and the staff attentive and helpful. This is a place to come to unwind and relax.
I was shown a large bedroom in the main house which was lovely but as I was not staying, I am not able to comment on sleep quality or wifi.

A gorgeous former tea estate mansion. Felt like a private villa escape; gorgeous building; large bedrooms and an amazing pool. All set in a picture postcard setting of paradise.
The house is set on a hill with tea plantations and herbs and fruits growing all around the hill sides. The staff here are great. The chef makes the best breastfasts (including lots of options for fussy Western kids). The evening meals are a full banquet with your table being coveted in different bowls of gorgeous food.
I would recommend this escape to anyone; very easy to loose yourself with the tranquil sound of the birds amd the visual sights of paradise.

This was the highlight of our trip!
This colonial bungalow is set in the hills of the tea plantation area of the country, and the views are simply beautiful. It is located up a steep and narrow road, and the actual driveway is an unmade track which at first appears to treacherous to be safely travelled by motor vehicle ; our experienced driver was initially unwilling to take us down it!
However, please persevere; it is well worth the effort!
The house itself is full of character and the colonial feel has been preserved. However it is the staff and the view that make this a great place to visit. Our host was a wonderful man called Moorthy; he could not do enough to please us. He was almost like a friend by the time we left, and insisted on us all having photos taken together. The food was excellent, prepared by the talented Mr Mohan! A young lad, Prasadh, took us on a a walk around the village, and this was a highlight of our trip. The local people were all really friendly and welcoming, despite having very little in the way of possessions and wealth. Prasadh knows all the local flora really well. However, I should state that the walk was neither short nor flat, as Moorthy had described it to us!
There is so much more that I could say about this place, but suffice it to say, we will definitely return there as soon as we can!
A real gem!

What a wonderful 2 night stay we have just had at strathisla. We felt very privelidged to be able to stay in such a beautiful home with stunning views.

We took up the offer of a tour of the local area and tea plantations and enjoyed seeing where various fruits, spices and herbs come from. Even our six year old was entertained and wanted to take me on his own tour later in the day.

Meals were absolutely delicious, amongst the best food we have had in Sri Lanka. After expressing our interest in eating jackfruit it was one of the dishes prepared for us for dinner.

We were very well taken care of from the moment we arrived. We would wholeheartedly recommend staying here and would not hesitate to return should we visit Sri Lanka again.

This is a nice old estate house but needs some urgent renovation in some aspects to the accommodation. My advice is not to use Google maps to go here as it would take one through an almost unnavigable road for a short distance.
Moorthy the house keeper was always available & extremely helpful-a definite asset

We travelled through Sri Lanka on our honeymoon and stayed in various types of accommodation, some of which was good, average and excellent. Strathisla was excellent in terms of comfort, value for money, relaxation, hospitality and food, glorious food. You can do as little or as much as you like but it is impossible not to relax and unwind in this magnificent place. It was hard to leave and the manager, Jeyakumar and his wife, Priya, are the most wonderful couple – genuine warmth and hospitality. They arranged day trips to Kandy and took us on local walks (the swim in the local springs was fantastic). They also organised a very informative tour of the Hatale Tea Factory and a stunning hike to mini World’s End. At first glance, Strathisla may not be the first choice for honeymooners (especially if all you want is 5-star accommodation) but if you are looking for a genuine immersion in the warmth of Sri Lanka and comfortable, clean rooms in a colonial bungalow, then it is a must!

We stayed at Strathisla at the beginning of our 3 week vacation in Sri Lanka and we absolutely loved it. It turned out to be the highlight of our trip: the house is fantastic, the garden exquisite, the pool beautifully integrated, the veranda perfect for relaxing. Jkumar and Priya are wonderful hosts and Priya's food was the very best we had in Sri Lanka. If you are thinking of staying more than one night in Kandy, don't :-) Just book the other night(s) here. It's off the beaten path, but not far from Kandy and Matale. We cannot recommend Strathisla highly enough!

I can't imagine accommodation in this part of Sri Lanka being any better! It's a bit out of the way, but this magnificent 1860s bungalow in the cooler highland area outside Matale makes a great base for exploring the region.
Large well appointed rooms, spectacular views, beautiful spring fed pool, and wonderful wide veranda to drink lashings of tea and dine on the best home made food using local produce.
The hosts are warm, friendly , helpful and knowledgable and thus is a very calm and relaxing place. We stayed a week and could easily have stayed longer!

I was planning to visit Sir Johns Bungalow, in Riverston, Matale district, but they were fully booked during the period, so I chose to spend one night at the Strathisla Guest House, in a nearby area, as it was well recommended by Trip Advisor.
The guest house is an old colonial bungalow exuding the charm of the colonial days. The rooms are large, airy and have the necessities of daily life, but not the luxuries.
Kumar and Priya, owner managers of the property treat you like personal special guests, which is overwhelming. All services including simple but delicious meals are provided by the gracious hosts.
The location and the ambience are magical, specially the misty hills in the early morning.
The only negative is the access road, about half a kilometer off the main road, which is narrow, bumpy and untarred.
Worth a visit for peace and quiet.

We stayed at the Strathisla guest house July 21-25th. What a fantastic place - old coffee plantation house with gardens, surrounded by forests and looking down at a cultivated valley with paddy fields. The accomodation is good, the food exquisite and the hospitality (thanks Jaya and Priya) fantastic. Easy travel to Knuckles range, Hunas Falls and Matale. We will be back
