Detailed Reviews

This hotel is in an excellent location, within walking distance to all the main attractions and close to Waverley train station. The bed was comfortable, the staff were welcoming, the room was equipped with everything we needed and although the room was small it did the job. The breakfast said included on the booking site but didn’t state it was a cold breakfast. That being said what was on offer was lovely. The toiletries smell lovely and there was very little noise which I think is always worth a mention for hotels, nothing worse than hearing everything and anything through the walls.
The not so great, what makes it less of a star:
The cleaning staff made the bed (better than we did) and replaced the towels but the floor wasn’t swept and we weren’t given any more toilet roll. I know it’s easy to call down for some, but there should be two available at all times.
The pillows were to much together and to little separate so we both have neck ache today.
We didn’t like the fact the reception area is a tiny little stand amongst people eating breakfast, so checking in gives you no privacy, I didn’t like confirming my details so close to strangers. Literally the reception staffs elbow was brushing the top of some guys hair trying to eat his toast. Maybe this needs rethinking.
We stayed at New Year so it was almost double what you’d usually pay.

Dear Polly, We appreciate the time you took to share your feedback. We are delighted you found our location convenient for exploring Edinburgh and that you appreciated the comfort of our beds and the warm welcome from our staff. It's also wonderful to hear that the level of noise was pleasingly low, ensuring you had a restful stay. However, we regret to hear of your concerns regarding housekeeping and the replenishment of toiletries; we usually receive high marks for cleanliness and attention to detail. Your feedback regarding the pillows and the check-in experience have been noted as well. While we strive to offer a unique and friendly check-in experience, we understand the importance of privacy and will contemplate how this can be improved. We also acknowledge that prices can be higher during peak seasons like the New Year, though we strive to provide competitive rates for our guests year round. Nonetheless, we are thankful for your positive remarks about our lovely breakfast offerings and the quality of our toiletries. We hope to welcome you back for another enjoyable experience. Kind regards,

Hotel's Favourite
We stayed in this hotel for two weeks in August during the fringe and we had stayed here also during our several earlier visits to Edinburgh. I can confidently say this is the best place to stay when in Edinburgh.
The location is awesome: a stone throw away from Princess street Shopping but a quieter location being away from the crowds. It’s also close to the St. James Quarters Mall and Multrees Walk High Street Shops. The Andrew’s Square bus stop is right across. It’s the starting point for the hop-on and hop-off sightseeing buses and some intercity buses. The stop for the Skylink buses to Edinburgh Airport is just a block away. Edinburgh Bus Station is just two blocks away roughly. The Tram station is just across the St. Andrew’s Park in front of the hotel. The park also acts as a good place to hang around especially in the summers. There is also a Costa in there.
Some excellent eating places are within less than two minutes of walk. This includes Dishoom the best Indian restaurant in Edinburgh and Bread Street Kitchen (a Gordon Ramsay restaurant).
The rooms are pleasantly furbished and spacious enough (depending on the room type one chooses). The breakfast Buffett is pretty decent just that it never changes. So this becomes a bit boring for visitors who are staying for longer duration.
The staff all across are extremely helpful, courteous and customer focused. I would especially like to call out and thank Samantha and Tatiana on front desk for all their support throughout our stay. They are always ready to walk some extra miles that can deliver customer happiness. And that’s the reason this hotel has almost become our permanent abode whenever we visit Edinburgh

My mum and I regularly stay at this hotel, it’s our favourite in Edinburgh due to the ideal location on St.Andrews Square in the heart of the city. Our most recent stay in November was wonderful. We had a lovely, spacious double room that had been recently redesigned. The comfortable arm chairs and table were handy and there were drawers and a wardrobe, so plenty of storage. The bathroom was a modern style wet room with a shower and an additional rain shower above. The Arran Aromatics After the Rain toiletries, is one of my favourite scents. In the evening we enjoyed relaxing with a few cocktails and snacks at the hotel’s Bonnie & Whistle bar restaurant. Above all it is the staff at the Ibis Styles who make this hotel great. The staff are incredibly helpful and welcoming, especially Tatiana, who went above and beyond to make our stay perfect and very special. We have already booked again in December to do our Christmas shopping and to enjoy the Christmas lights, the well renowned most Christmassy Dome (just round the corner) and the Christmas market.

Ideally placed to visit the city on foot with a public paid parking nearby (the ibis gives a 40% discount on the parking).
The room is quite small but bed 160 comfortable , kettle and tea, coffee available and nice shower room.
Nice decor and beautiful view of St Andrew Square
At the reception you are told to indicate in the morning at the door of your room whether or not you want the cleaning to be done (for reasons supposedly ecological) and when you ask that yes it is done (at 400 euros per night I think you have the right!!) your dirty towels are not removed from the floor where you put them and the garbage cans are not even empty... as for the bed it is summarily retyped.
Breakfast is very good
But it is very expensive for an Ibis especially where cleaning is not done!!!

Stayed at this Hotel for two nights Tuesday 10th / 12th December, and had a great stay. I have used this Hotel on two previous occasions over the years, and saw a big improvement from before. I believe they have had some renovations done to the bedrooms. They have fitted large t.v. screens to the bedroom wall. The bathroom has a choice of rain or conventional shower head. Arran bath product are also provided. The Continental breakfast choice is varied although no hot produce is available. Many years ago they did provide a cooked breakfast but cost saving probably changed this option. I paid £404 for may stay via Booking.com which I thought was quite expensive, but Edinburgh is an expensive city anyway. Great Hotel in a nice location.

Dear Angus, Thank you for taking the time to share your review. We are thrilled to hear that your recent stay with us was so enjoyable. We are pleased that the enhancements to our rooms, including the installation of large flat-screen TVs and the updated shower amenities, contributed to your satisfaction. The inclusion of Arran bath products aligns with our commitment to providing quality toiletries to our guests. It's great to learn that you found our varied continental breakfast offerings to your liking, as we strive to cater to a diverse range of tastes. Nonetheless, we understand your concerns regarding the absence of hot items at breakfast and the rate for your stay. While we no longer offer a cooked breakfast option, our continental spread is thoughtfully prepared to provide a satisfying start to the day. As a popular destination, Edinburgh can indeed have higher accommodation rates, especially during peak seasons or city events. We appreciate your understanding of this aspect of our city's vibrant tourism industry. Finally, we are thrilled that you appreciated our hotel's excellent location, which places guests like yourself in close proximity to Edinburgh's numerous attractions and shopping destinations. Our central location is certainly one of the attributes we are most proud of. We hope to have the occasion to welcome you back. Kind regards, We hope we will have the opportunity to see you again in the future. Best regards, Karina.MIKALAUSKAITE, Front office Manager

What a spectacular 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration that we experienced in this very lovely hotel! It really was a dream come true for us! This really IS the place to stay if you want a real feel for the warmth and charm of Edinburgh as well as its people. Each staff member makes you feel like you are part of their family! Tatiana especially went out of her way to answer any of the questions that we had about where to eat, where to get my glasses fixed, places to visit, etc.
The location of this hotel simply cannot be beat with its view of St. Andrew's Square and Edinburgh Castle. The hop-on hop-off buses are also only a minute or two walk from here and are a great way to get an overview of the city and its surroundings. This hotel is also only about an 8 minute walks to Princes Street with its many restaurants, shops and St James Mall.
The daily breakfast buffet was quite varied featuring lots of fresh and healthy foods to choose from e.g. fresh fruit, porridge, yogurt, granola, smoked salmon, scrambled and hard-boiled eggs, etc. Mind you, their daily baked goods (especially the carrot cake with cream cheese frosting!) were also scrumptious as well as their coffee and fruit juices!
We were able to experience both the 6th floor castle view room as well as a larger first floor room which also had an incredible of the park in St. Andrew's Square. Both rooms had very comfortable beds and were very well appointed to meet our needs e.g. coffee maker, cookies, large coloured TV screen, large closet, desk, coat hooks, etc. The shower was superb and felt wonderful to enjoy after a long day of sightseeing!
As well, we enjoyed a couple of very reasonably priced and delicious evening meals in the bar, because we just wanted to relax and take in the weekend entertainment. We especially loved the calamari, sweet potato fries, deep fried haggis balls and chicken wings accompanied by several different kinds of tasty dipping sauces and of course, the drinks from the bar served by the friendliest and kindest young fellow that you would ever want to meet!
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts Zoltan, Goisa, Zsanett, Karina, Tatiana as well as all of the Ibis Styles Team members for making our stay a life-long lasting memory for us!
PS Also, a big thank you for the anniversary champagne and cookies!

The hotel is in a great central location overlooking St Andrew Square and a 10 minute walk from Waverley Station. They have an arrangement with a Q-Park at the Omni Centre for discount parking. Ibis Styles have a quirky decor which differs at all hotels, this one has a funky Scottish theme. There is no actual reception, you just walk straight into the bar/lounge area. Staff are stationed at a small desk with a laptop. We received a friendly and efficient greeting and were pleased our room was ready early at 12.30pm. We had chosen a 'Works' room which was located on the top floor and had a separate lounge and bedroom with a corner balcony. This specific room looked out the back but you could see the northern suburbs of Edinburgh down to the Forth. We had mentioned in our booking the stay was for my birthday so we were delighted to find a small chocolate cake and card waiting in the room. The room was equipped with a coffee pod machine, kettle, tea & biscuits but no fridge, plates or wine glasses. There are two TVs - one in the bedroom and one in the lounge area. Two separate split cycle air conditioners on the wall of the bedroom and lounge area provided adequate heating, but we couldn't adjust the fan to low so it was quite loud and strong when turned on. The bathroom has just a large shower but no bath, with a decent sized vanity unit. There are dispensers for shampoo and body wash in the shower, so if you prefer soap and conditioner you would need to bring these yourself. There is also a hand cream dispenser on the vanity. No facecloth was provided. The hotel was perfectly comfortable and adequate for a one night stay but is missing amenities like a safe, a bedside clock and no tissues. The lighting was quite dim even though they had additional floor lamps. Also being a 'dog friendly' hotel there was a dog in the room next door who barked non stop for an hour or so in the early evening, but thankfully was quiet overnight and in the morning.
Breakfast was included in the rate and is downstairs in the bar area. It was quite busy but we managed to find a table. It is a generous continental buffet with a good selection of pastries, bread for toast, fruit, cold cuts and cheese. There is also porridge, cereals, yoghurt, juice + tea & coffee from a machine. If you wanted a special coffee you had to order from the bar at an additional cost. They also had a scrambled eggs, but no other hot items. All in all it was a comfortable stay in a great location and at a fair price, but if you like expect 5 star amenities you may be a little disappointed.
If you book via the Accor website and are a member of All, you can receive a discounted rate and free wifi.

I recently visited Edinburgh, staying at the Ibis looked perfect …. The location was perfect, the hotel was I would say quite disappointing. As an experienced Hotelier myself, I understand that this operation was a step away from the traditional Reception welcome and 4 star service you might expect for the price paid, but the most disappointing thing for me was the poor attention to detail in cleanliness and guest services.
The hotel room was small, design elements did not fit the room layout and size. The idea behind the design was great, I loved the Scottish elements, with the tartan carpet and nod to scottish dialect. They should have been adapted to room size and type. One size does not always fit all. The cleanliness of the room was poor, especially the bathroom…. Dusty ledges, no bin liners and dirty taps.
Hospitality is going through a period of transformation and has had to adapt and change…. I know the challenges we as an industry have in recruiting the right people, who can be trusted to complete tasks to the highest standards, or greet guests was a smile, before turning to a task. Training and checking is the key and certainly did not appear to be in action here.
Breakfast has great potential to be less labour intensive service, but the layout has been poorly thought out. Maybe if direction had been given to guests (either in person or a well placed sign), they might find that guests manoeuvre in and out more smoothly than they do currently. Bowls should be near the porridge, cups should be by the coffee machine…and so on. One thing that was evident was when staff members arrive at work, they all go via the coffee machine!
(It was obvious they were staff as they all had keycards to access locked doors).
It looked like they had enough people (mostly milling about reception) but the two in the restaurant were joined at the hip.
They needed to divide and conquer, rather than acting like two boys on a night out, checking out the talent, with little interaction with the guests in their charge.
Maybe I see more than others… after all, it is my job, Scots are known for their interactions and hospitality and I simply didn’t feel that on my visit.
A real shame, a great hotel location, I loved being right in the centre of the town, but I would choose another hotel on my next visit. I guess a lot of their guests are not return guests, but those visiting the city from abroad and used to a continental feel and buffet, and I guess many like myself, will not stop to report their unhappiness but simply write a review such as this. These days that means the team “on the floor” should be able to pick up on issues, body language during interactions with guests…. If there are no interactions, then less opportunities to turn that guest’s experience around!
Good luck.

Good luck.

Our brief visit to Edinburgh, on our way north, coincided with Taylor Swift’s tour visit to the city, making hotel rooms scarce and expensive. After multiple unsuccessful efforts to book a room, I ended up booking a room at the Ibis Styles, a self-described better quality budget hotel. In most respects the hotel lives up to its hype, though the room rate (no doubt jacked up due to the Swift concerts) of over $500/night was hardly economical, though comparably lower than the nicer hotels in town. The location is perfect — on St. Andrew’s Square, a stone’s throw from the old town, a block from the bus stop to the airport and just a few blocks to the train station. Couldn’t be much better. The lobby/public area was very pleasant and the included breakfast buffet was surprisingly good. The staff was friendly and always helpful. There were no other amenities. Our room was tiny — the bed occupied most of the space and navigating around the bed with two suitcases open was tricky. It could not have been smaller. Otherwise, it was clean and the bed was reasonably comfortable. The safe didn’t work and the staff couldn’t manage to get it to work. My big complaint about the hotel was the exterior noise at night — our ground level room faced the front of the hotel (the staff could not move us, we were told) and the traffic noise was both constant and proximate. Every vehicle passed over a manhole cover located directly in front of our room window, making a jolting noise that was very disruptive. Someone needs to get that fixed. I slept badly for two nights — and what is a hotel for, if not to provide a good night’s sleep? So, my review would be more favorable had I been given a quieter room. The hotel is not a bad choice for a budget conscious traveler amenable to a tiny room in a good location. Just insist on a room facing away from the main street.

Dear Michael, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are delighted that you found our lobby area to be very pleasant and that the breakfast buffet exceeded your expectations. Our team takes great pride in providing a warm welcome and a good start to the day with our hearty Continental breakfast. However, we apologise that certain parts of your stay fell short of your expectations. We understand that the room size was a concern and we aim to be transparent about this unique characteristic of our hotel, due to its historical nature as a former bank. Regarding the rate, we strive to be competitive and acknowledge that rates can indeed reflect city events. Moreover, we regret the inconvenience caused by the safe in your room and understand the importance of such amenities for our guests. We also empathize with your experience regarding the noise; while our central location is ideal for exploring Edinburgh, it does mean we are part of the city's lively atmosphere. We have noted your comments and can assure you that we continually seek ways to enhance our guests' comfort. Nonetheless, our central location is one of the features we are most proud of, providing guests with easy access to Edinburgh's iconic attractions and convenient transport links. We are pleased that you appreciated this aspect of our hotel and hope it enriched your visit to the city. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back for a more restful experience. Warm regards,

From the moment we arrived early in the morning, after our arrival from London on the Caledonian Sleeper, the staff at reception were both welcoming and efficient taking care of our luggage whilst our room was being prepared. We left o enjoy our day and returned later to the bar where we made the acquaintance of the resident barman and all round nice chap Jordan. He was a breath of fresh air with his maturity, professionalism, and genuine friendliness, and he really engages with you to make your time at the bar very enjoyable. He is a real credit to this hotel, and I am sure that his pleasant demeanour is part of the reason that the bar receives a good flow of traffic from guests and the public alike. I have to say he is a great asset to the team, and we enjoyed our time in his company for drinks and chats. The food at breakfast was great, the staff are all helpful and the location of the hotel is absolutely outstanding as well as representing good value for money. I would have no hesitation in staying here again nor recommending it to anyone because it ticks all the boxes and I was even impressed with the comfort of the beds so it has been superb for my wife and I on our first trip to this great city. We will be back next year and will be staying here again, 100%
