We booked the hotel as it was near to the Playhouse and we weren't disappointed. The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The whole hotel was immaculate with lots of original features and the breakfast was cooked to perfection.

We chose this hotel because it was inexpensive, not far from the railway station and within walking distance of all the Edinburgh sights, shops and important attractions. It's a family hotel, with a nice, slightly old-fashioned, atmosphere. The rooms are small, and they don't all have en-suite facilities, so you need to make sure of that if it's important to...

sorry we made a mistake with your booking. it very rarely happens but we hope you were satisfied with the full refund. I take full responsibility for allocating you basic rooms instead of ensuite. most of our rooms are ensuite and if you should care to come again - the views over the river Forth from top floor are good...

I've been staying at the Terrace Hotel for 4 days in March. It was the first time I was visiting Edinburgh and I was very pleased with the position of the Hotel, which allowed me to see all the principal attractions of the city by walking to them. The Hotel is only 15 minutes walk from the City Centre, therefore...

glad you enjoyed your stay. we are just 400 metres along from Leith walk with its cinemas restaurants and shopping including John Lewis. In the other direction we are 10 minutes walk from Holyrood palace and park and Parliament and the beginning of the 'Royal Mile'. So we are 'fairly' central but away from the bustle of traffic. garden views...

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights whilst she was working in the city. Lovely little hotel in a gorgeous building ruined by a very frosty service from start to finish. We didn't once feel welcome, made all more clear with a knock on the door because we were 2 minutes late for breakfast. The room was good,...

An attractive Georgian building in a highly sought after and convenient location, with very clean, spacious, comfortable rooms. Friendly staff make this a very welcoming place to stay. A reasonable breakfast makes this very good value for money!

Had a fantastic stay at the hotel. Was greeted by the owner Mr Mann who was lovely, a very interesting man who was chatty and cheerful. We advised him that we came from the Isle of Man and he was genuinely interested especially when talking about the TT. The room we had was clean and spacious and the bed was...

This is fantastic gem of a small family run hotel in Central Edinburgh. Located on Royal Terrace (a lovely Georgian terrace on the north slope of Calton Hill) and just a five minute walk to the Playhouse theatre. The hotel is a lovingly preserved Georgian building. The room we stayed in (rm 11) was very quiet on the 3rd floor...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
