Stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in April 2014. Very very convienent to walk to dozens of sites. Rooms were clean. Hotel Staff were PHENOMENAL!!! Continental breakfast was perfect and warm to kick off the day. Only negative aspect was the wifi service --- sporatic at best.

We stayed at this hotel recently for two nights. We were pleased to see that breakfast had been included in the price of the room. We booked early and the rate was easily affordable (and much cheaper than the rate would have been on the night). The hotel was clean, room tidy and the facilities were what you would expect...

This hotel is really handy for visiting Edinburgh as long as you don't bring a car. It is just opposite The Playhouse so excellent if you are going there. The receptionist was very nice and let us check in early. Our room was fine and on top floor but it did feel a bit like a large attic room although...

We stayed here for the Hogmanay street party, so location was important for us, and this is ideally located opposite Edinburgh Playhouse and a short walk from Princes Street. First the bad bits. If you are driving here, they only have parking for 9 cars, so in all likelihood you will be parking in the shopping centre car park opposite....

Dear Rex, Thank you for your review and kind words, Edinburgh is indeed very busy during the Hogmanay celebrations, the room type 'standard' is made clear on our website that it can be any room type subject to availability upon arrival, my apologies of course though for any inconvenience caused. We do hope to see you again soon, please do...

This hotel might not be as charming as other old buidings or BBs in Edinburgh but it offers everything you can expect from a good hotel and despite its great location, in city centre, it has fairly quiet rooms. Breakfast is awesome, with plenty of choice of good food.

We visited Edinburgh by car and getting to the hotel was a nightmare by car. The car park is about a 10 min walk away, and getting luggage in and out of the hotel meant parking on a cobblestone side street uphill and bringing all the baggage across. The room itself wasn't too bad, the typical holiday inn express room...

Another great option by Holiday Inn Express. Excellent location, just one block from Royal Miles and Edinburgh's main attractions. Within the Old Town and a short walk to New Town and Waverly Train Station. I have a bad knee and had no problems walking around this area. The room, wasn't spacious but comfortable enough for 2 individuals, as is expected...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
