I booked to stay in Edinburgh. I was quite excited as I've not stayed here before. I booked via Late Rooms to stay at the Holiday Express just off the Royal Mile. I payed a bit more so that I could stay in the ideal location for my short overnight stay. When I arrived the receptionist informed me I was...

Dear Eusk, Thank you for your review. I am sorry to hear you were disappointed with your stay. We are as you have mentioned in a prime city centre location, we are an express hotel therefore had you have stayed at our sister property they also would not have had baths as all of our hotels have showers. Our prices...

This was our second stay here & we will return in future. The room and hotel in general are spotlessly clean. The room we had this time on the second floor was incredibly warm. I know we could open the window but there were industrial fans below and the noise would've kept me awake. We both slept well, however my...

I had almost an identical experience to the above person who was also put in a room suitable for handicapped people. When I tried to sort this out with Expedia found the staff unhelpful and was also offered no refund. The breakfast was also very poor standard as quoted in many of these refunds and the staff at the desk...

Dear Sharon, Thank you for your review, Expedia are a third party booking agent when they book room types they can book anything from a standard room which is assigned on checkin and can be any room type that is available or a specific room type ie a twin or double room, I assume for your booking a standard reservation...

This hotel is in a pretty good location, but I think the main thing that lets it down is the staff's lack of attentiveness, plus the fact that there is no facility to get dinner in the hotel. I'm quite a big fan of Holiday Inn Express, and have had good experiences elsewhere, but this was a bit of a...

Awesome location within walking distance to local living, shopping as well as all the business, transportation and tourist activities. While the location is good, parking -including the unload area - is awkward if you have a car. The parking is a moderate expense over and above a good room rate (meaning much lower than comparable hotels and lodges) around downtown...

Bedroom was incredibly clean but very dated, no air con, grouting in bathroom poor, heater was temperamental, towels ancient, plug socket other side of room to bed. Staff - front desk- little interaction/interest on passing, cleaning staff knocked three times to clean room over two days- all before 10am. Breakfast is included with room but is very basic, low quality....

This isn't my first choice in Edinburgh and wouldn't choose it if travelling with my wife. Plus points: price and location. Negatives: twice I've had a basement room below street level - clean but small. Cheap bedding and low quality breakfast (although included in price) Better options are the Novotel, Apex and Doubletree but all will be more expensive than...

You can't fault this hotel really. Location is amazing, close to everything. Omni centre and theatre is directly opposite, Royal Mile is about a 10/15 min walk. Waverley Train station is approximately a 5 minute walk, loads of decent bars and restaurants within 100 metres. The hotel is very basic but you get what you pay for. At just over...

I go to Edinburgh fairly regularly but had never stayed here before. It's the cheapest hotel I've used in town but I would say it is good value for money. It has an excellent location. Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
