We really had to be budget conscious when booking our stay in Edinburgh and chose Motel One Edinburgh Royal as it seemed to fit for our needs. We found it easily enough and parked (rather expensively!) for an hour close by to unload and settle in. Upon entering the hotel, we were rather put off by the facing, open doored toilet, but as soon as we turned to enter reception, that was immediately forgotten about as the receptionist welcome was super and the whole lobby/lounge area exceeded our expectations. We were in room 719 - we paid extra to be sure of a view and it didn't disappoint. Over the park and railway station to Princes St. Lovely! Edinburgh, to us, is a quiet city so we didnt mind the bustle outside when the windows were open, and when they were closed, barely heard a sound - even from the busy station. The room itself was ok - felt clean, a bit smaller than we had anticipated, but given we hadn't planned to spend much time in the room on our two night stay, it didn't matter, but I hate to imagine how small the standard rooms were! The shower room was well thought out for its size and very clean too. It would have been nice to have had some bottled water in the room for our arrival but thats the only negative we have. The bed and pillows were a surprise. So very, very comfortable! On the last night I turned my foot leaving the hotel, and we just want to give Adam a special thank you for helping fix me up. I'm still giggling about how I might use a triangular bandage on my foot, but it did help keep the ice in place! We really appreciated his help. Would we stay again? Absolutely! Would we recommend? Definitely.

We came over from Spain and stayed in a B&B in Leith to start with and then to Creiff to see family. We booked to stay in this motel so we could get easy access to the airport. This motel is lovely, very relaxing, lovely rooms I must add very quiet and a good night's rest. We have even taken a photo of the tartan colour of the head boards and are trying to get your lush pillows to get here in Spain. Thank you for a great stay and we will be staying here again .

Dear Trip828676 Thank you so much for your kind review of our hotel. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay! The tartan was custom made for Motel One so cannot be purchased in any stores. It was designed by Johnson's of Elgin so if you contact them, they may be able to ship some to you in Spain. Kind Regards Ailsa Ross Hotel Manager

Stayed at motel one, the royal mile side of the station. Extra £10/night more than the princes st one as 'it's just been refurbished" we were told. Not really much sign of that as our room was just plain white, looks like woodchip wallpaper painted white and plain white painted roof. 2 random pictures on wall didn't do much to help, 1 of some sheep, god knows why. No fridge, no telephone to maybe call reception to ask for an iron as there's not one of them in room either. No plug in sink to fill with water, as well as hairs in sink from previous guest. Pet hate of mine, no soap. Call me old-fashioned, I want a bar of soap to shower with, not liquid from a pump. On the plus side, we arrived well before the 4pm check-in and got our rooms early, and staff were great, quickly checked us in and gave info on the hotel and facilities, plus normal checkout is a generous midday. Both motel ones are located at Waverley station so really couldn't ask for better location. If nothing other than location matters then either of these would be a great choice, but it's the little things that make a hotel one that you would want to return to, and it's not this one I'm afraid.

Dear Jostro6568 Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. The theme of the design for Edinburgh-Royal is the Scottish Highlands, so the photographs in the rooms and corridors were all taken in the Highlands and are representations of the natural beauty of Scotland. It's a shame you didn't like them, but hopefully the theme makes more sense now. Motel One is a design budget hotel and our rooms are meant to offer the essentials for a hotel stay, but no additional extras. This is why we do not have fridges or telephones in our guest rooms, as the majority of our guests do not need these amenities. We also have liquid soap as we can refill the bottles, which is more environmentally friendly than single use toiletries. I am sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay overall. We appreciate that Motel One is a very specific design and therefore it is not for everyone. I am pleased to hear that our staff were friendly and looked after you, which hopefully made your stay pleasurable despite our short comings. Kind Regards Ailsa Ross Hotel Manager

Stayed here while in Edinburgh for a long weekend break. Perfect location right in the centre and very reasonably priced. Our room was clean and spacious and the staff were always very friendly. We didn’t have breakfast here so can’t comment on the food, but it always seemed busy at breakfast time. Would definitely stay here again next time we visit Edinburgh.
