We had a quick visit to Edinburgh and wanted to stay in a central location near the train station. The Edinburgh Hilton was perfect. Just a quick walk up and over the bridge and we checked in at the base of the "Royal Mile." Our room was one of the nicest we stayed at in Europe, with all amenities, modern,...

We booked 2 nights here during half term after promising to take the kids to Scotland for ages. We travelled by train from Newark and the hotel was literally 6 minutes walk from the station. We arrived earlier than the designated check in time and were just expecting to be able to leave our luggage at reception but our room...

,We were here during the rugby finals last week. The hotel was really busy but as a Lifetime Diamond member we still expected a nice room and received the smallest Hilton room ever. Additionally everyone was extremely stressed out and less than friendly. Upon checkout I commented on my concerns and told the front desk personnel that we were returning...

I often choose the Hilton Edinburgh Carlton as a place to get drinks with company and for parties, I visited recently for evening cocktails. This was a lovely evening! Cocktails spot on, a good atmosphere and friendly, fast and attentive service from Ricky. Will definitely be back!

Went here with a group of 50+ people after performing with choir at St Giles. The buffet provided was very good. Nothing startling but plentiful and hot and cold options. Comfortable tables and affordable wine list. Very nice decor in the hotel. Modern and well appointed room. All very clean and new and spacious. Excellent toilet facilities as well. Would...

Very efficient check in and helpful staff. Let us leave our bags in secure area after check out so we could roam without carring our luggage. Bathroom with shower was excellent and included all the essential toiletry products.

Wow, The newly renovated Hilton Carlton offers a truly relaxing environment in plush and comfortable surroundings. Waiter table service means there is no need to leave your seats. We popped in for a high tea and we're wowed by the layout, service and the presentation. We started with their traditional Edinburgh Gin served in a tall glass over ice with...

Zero reaction when we reported a room problem. Answered question with an answer for a different question. Prices hiked because there was a rugby match at Murrayfield. Shame because it took the gloss off what would have been a perfect weekend. Staying in the Hilton, Cambridge in a few weeks. Hope it's better.

Stayed for 2 nights on a business trip. Large well furnished room with large double bed, large TV, en suite and assorted soaps. Breakfast Scottish full works including haggis and porridge, nice relaxing bar, good ambiance, helpful staff, free wi-fi. Would stay again good for holidays and romance.

Positives, centrally located, short walk from station and recently refurbished. Gym is excellent and as good as any I have stayed in but no pool. Negatives, rooms are modern but bland. I had a suite but it did not have a bath and design seemed limited to putting nice furniture into large space with no finishing touches. It can be...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
