Hotel was superbly clean and had all the facilities you'd need. I didn't think there wasn't tea and coffee in the room until after I'd checked out and my colleague told me it was in the wardrobe! I would have happily give this hotel 5 stars, but the breakfast experience let it down. The waiters and waitresses didn't speak much...

Room had a view of a brick wall. Very noisy. Whilst room was clean and the room facilities were basic. Location was excellent for what we had planned for our overnight stay in Edinburgh. Not a great choice for room service. Overall poor value.

Modern, clean and great location. Walking distance to most of Edinburgh's major attractions, and with great pubs, bars, café and restaurants right on the door step. Good location for weekend break or night out!

Apex Grassmarket is a lovely hotel, excellent location over looking Edinburgh Castle and there a lot of unique shops in the Grassmarket area. The staff are always welcoming and go over and above expectations. Look forward to going back again and again.

One of the best best hotels for its class that I have stayed in. You could not pick a better location in Edinburgh. Rooms are amazing everything that you need is in there even down to the chocolate bars to have with your coffe, also a nice touch a little duck to take with you.

Christmas diner at Apex Hotel, Edinburgh was terrible. Burnt Haggis Pakora for starter served with a brown and cream substance that passed as a dip. Main course of Turkey with trimmings included shredded Brussels Sprouts!!! As for dessert hmmmm. At best i'd describe the food as bland at worse, yuk.

As regular visitors to Edinburgh, we often stay in the Apex hotels, mostly Waterloo Place. This visit though we decided to stay in the Apex Grassmarket. On arrival we were met by very friendly and helpful staff. We were given a complementary upgrade which we appreciated greatly. It was a castle view from the room which was fantastic. The room...

As ever The Apex staff were brilliant and helped us have a very enjoyable trip. The Apex Grassmarket hotel is located just behind the Castle and Grassmarket street is home to some wonderful little pubs and restaurants so you don't have to go looking too far for the perfect evening out.

A nice hotel, but the noise levels from the Grassmarket pubs is a nightmare. Got very little sleep. Not hotel's fault but maybe an update on the old double glazing may help. Had a bacon roll for breakfast bacon was slightly burnt and roll had no butter! How hard is it to do a great bacon roll? Would go back...

Asked for a view of the castle & they definitely delivered. The room was great, the service was good & the location was brilliant. We arrived by train from London & it was a 5 minute taxi ride from the station to the hotel. We got a taxi up to the castle as it is a steep hill, but easily...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
