Returning to Gerald's Place was an absolute treat. Gerald is always an accommodating host and the breakfasts were delicious! Could not ask for a better location in Edinburgh, especially during the festival as it is so central and close to the venues. Can't wait to visit Edinburgh again!

Gerald knows the community and is very willing to share his ideas. He seemed concerned that we enjoy our trip and we felt as though he was a favorite uncle within hours of arriving. His cooking is very good and he kept asking if there was anything else that we needed. From Geralds house we easily walked to the Castle,...

Our stay at Gerald's Place was perfect! First of all, the location is great - I can't emphasize that enough - it's in a lovely area of New Town - close to all the things you want to do in Edinburgh and near transportation hubs for going elsewhere, yet just outside of the fray. Particularly good during the Fringe Festival,...

Our party of five ladies from the US enjoyed a lovely stay at Gerald's Place in June. Our host was most welcoming and helpful--arranging for taxis, helping with luggage, etc. The location is near-perfect--a short walk from Prince's Street, Royal Mile, the Castle, and one could walk from the train station if you didn't have too much luggage! Our time...

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
