Stayed overnight here with family and enjoyed it. Breakfast was good and was served by very nice staff. It is family friendly and the Canadian Lady who served us was great with the younger members of the family. The bedrooms were nice and the one l was in was quiet and the bed comfortable. Location was good near Calton Hill... More

We visited the hotel for our 'mini-moon' and having stayed in other IHG group hotels, and from the images online, we expected this would be a really nice stay for our first time in Edinburgh. Unfortunately, check-in was late - and the room we did get (basement room) had a broken shower. I was sure when I placed the booking... More

We booked a two night Superbreak weekend in a club room that included dinner on the first night and breakfast both mornings. We are a couple in our 40s/50s. Prior to arrival: I got in touch with the hotel and booked our inclusive dinner for the first night. The hotel answered all my email queries promptly. Arrival: We arrived at... More

We checked in on a weekend and it was busy. Check in was reasonably quick even though there is only 1 receptionist on duty. The hotel is located a good 15 minutes walk from Princess Street and main commercial / tourist area. Location is actually fine since it is on a quiet boulevard. The rooms are pretty dated, we complained... More

Recently spent the weekend with friends, we were very disappointed as we had no hot water(except) 4pm on Saturday, apparently everyone wanted a shower at the same time. I find this totally unacceptable in 2016! In addition self service breakfast was taken to a whole new level, in addition to having to add place settings and chairs for our group... More

A bit of confusion on arrival, but helpful young staff - in particular Jack in reception, sorted things. Dinner was OK, not outstanding. Breakfast good, fried eggs cooked to order and not standing under hot lamps. The hotel is conveniently located for a weekend visit. 15 minute walk to The Palace of Holyrood House and the dreadful Scottish Parliament Building... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
