Hotel is located in a central location to all tourist attractions and transport. The reception are staff friendly, however wouldn't accept my debit card as they only accept credit cards which I found quite strange. The rooms and en suite are quite large and very clean and modern. Only downside is we were located on the top floor and the...

I visited the hotel with my partner this month for a sightseeing holiday. The hotel overall is nice, with traditional decor and a Georgian theme. However it has to be the worst hotel I've ever stayed in, for sleep quality. Firstly when people walked past our room it felt and sounded like they were in the room itself, the walls...

Stumbled upon this purely by accident, but glad we did. Little boutique bar with some funky decor. Little Scottish touches. Lovely outdoor terrace with nice furniture, along with some nice water features. We will be visiting one evening as it has the vibe of being a pretty cool bar to hang out in.

Great location within easy reach for shopping, the playhouse and on tram line and good bus route, within walking distance to Waverly train station too. Stayed in room 20 on top floor with the most fabulous views, could even see the forth road bridge. Staff very welcoming and friendly, especially in the dining room. Lovely evening meal and well cooked...

I have to say the Place hotel was a very good value weekend stay. Only 5 mins walk from the main shopping streets. Hotel was comfortable, clean and well priced. The bar in the hotel was also reasonably priced too. It was, for us, just a comfortable stay than staying in a premier inn but cheaper(and the bed a little...

I can't say whether this hotel offers good value for money - we were given an overnight stay with dinner as a gift. However, the food in the hotel was good and the service was friendly enough from the staff too. When we booked the hotel, about a month or 2 before staying, we were told that we had to...

Very good location for bus and train stations and Playhouse etc. Reception staff pleasant and showed us ground floor and way to room. Room was not my idea of a suite having one main bedroom/living area plus bathroom. Both were large and clean however and quirkily finished BUT no stationery or tissues and only one armchair and coffee table plus...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
