The Mercure Hotel in Edinburgh was a bit of a let down to us. We had imagined a modern, contemporary styled hotel, but it wasn't like that at all. We had to park in st James shopping centre car park after being unable to find the parking suggested on their website. We knew that parking would be difficult and tjis...

Great room on top floor with balcony overlooking Princes St. Great central location. Waverley train station just across the road. Amazing breakfast for a tenner. Staff very pleasant. Will return in future for overnight stay.

The location is the best possible and my room cleaned and I got a nice view to the castle. The staff was a bit slow and I had to wait almost an hour to get in my room. The restaurant offers a large option of dishes and breakfast really worth the price.

This is a no thrills mid-budget type chain from Mercure. Rooms are clean, staff friendly, nothing to complain about. The view from our room wasn't the best and it was a little warm, but thanks to a bad view it was also quiet (back street facing) so opening the window for the night wasn't a problem. Location is great -...

Had a stay here with my family. The hotel itself is, as many other reviewers have commented, very tired. Its interior finishing and carpet are all painfully reminiscent of tacky late 80s early 90s decor. The elevators take days to move around. The bathrooms felt very old and cramped and the windows in the dining bar area and rooms were...

The Mercure Hotel is close to Waverly Station and perfectly situated with fabulous views from the rooms. This was our second stay here and we found the staff very helpful and friendly. The rooms are a little jaded and could do with a refurb but they are clean and after all it IS only a three star hotel. You get...

This was my second stay at the Mercury, and I was hoping that my first experience was a blip unfortunately it would appear not. There is something fundamentally wrong with the reception layout, checking in first time was 15 minutes, this time 20. There were 6 people in front of me and only 1 person manning reception. I felt for...

The hotel is ideally placed on Princes Street so easy access from Waverley Train Station. Check in is 2pm however when I arrived at 2.30 my room wasn't ready. I was offered a complementary drinks voucher for this lateness as asked to wait in the bar for my room to be ready. Interesting as a gold card voucher I would...

Staying in Princes Street and Gardens

Neighbourhood Profile
Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.
