I visited the hotel last weekend and I have to say how disappointed I was with my stay. My partner and I arrived with heavy bags and waited to check in. The lobby was nicely decorated, but was completely spoilt by ugly electric heaters and fans standing on the floor, and by lots of visible wires next to the porter's...

I stayed at the Scotsman for work for a couple of nights and would highly recommend this hotel. If you are tired of staying in traditional hotels, this quaint, older hotel is great and still has all the amenities. It was a nice touch having the arrive Scotch in the room and the rooms were wonderfully furnished. Looking forward to...

Perfect Cosmo and Negroni served up by a consummate professional bartender in a great setting. Why isn't this place heaving? A wonderful gem of an hotel: enough old world class to satisfy most of us snobs :-) but has a warm, friendly, modern edge.

From the outside a beautiful grand old building in the center of one of the best cities in the world. Lots of marble and oak paneling makes the interior look rather grand BUT - Nondescript entrance set off the road and not easy to find unless the "sometimes there" grey top hatted concierge is there. - Reception understaffed - I...

We spent just one night at this hotel on a bed and breakfast basis. The hotel is a 5 minute walk from Waverley train station so you are bang slap in the centre of this glorious city. After being greeted at the door by the concierge, check in was fairly quick; our room wasn't ready as we had arrived earlier...

This is a lovely hotel in a fantastic location for exploring the city. I was a little concerned it is directly opposite the railway station but we did not hear any trains throughout our stay. All staff were friendly and attentive. It's a shame we had to park elsewhere and pay, although we were grateful for the discount! We had...

I visited The Scotsman with my Mum and Aunt to celebrate Mother's Day. We opted for the Afternoon Tea and it was a very good choice. We were provided with an excellent choice of teas / coffees which were topped up regularly throughout. The savoury treats were delicious and plentiful. The cakes / scones were very good indeed, albeit the...

Looks like the hotel has been sold but the restaurant did not follow and is not catering for the hotel anymore. This is a bit of a weird situation for such a hotel of not having catering facilities. Otherwise my room was great, with amazing view on the Balmoral (which is a much better hotel by the way) but my...

The Scotsman Newspaper was published, until recently, in a prestigious building in the centre of Edinburgh, Scotland. The newspaper is now published from more modest offices at Orchard Brae House, 30 Queensferry Road, Edinburgh. The original 19th century Scotsman building has been converted into a fashionable, 5* boutique hotel. The hotel offers parking off site and limo or car hire...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
