My husband and I went for the last bank holiday weekend. The first room we were given was ok, but too close to the lift for our liking. We asked if we could be moved further away from the lifts. This wasn't a problem at all for them. The room we were given was perfect. Beautifully decorated and very quiet....

We traveled to Edinburgh for an overnight stay. The hotel is centrally located. This is a lovely hotel. The staff were very friendly & helpful especially the concierge Frank. We had a few drinks in the bar in the evening but didn't have time to use the pool or spa. Would thoroughly recommend this hotel & it was very reasonably...

This hotel has everything you need for a thoroughly pleasant stay in Edinburgh and is a short £3.60 taxi ride from Waverley Station if you have heavy luggage. A pleasant 15 minute walk down the Royal Mile though if you don't. My only criticism is that I would like to see some healthier non-dairy items on the restaurant dinner menu...

this place was a blessing. close to the Mile High and Hollyrood Palace and still away from the maddening energy of tourism. The hotel is very well connected with pleasant walkways and a great place for outdoor activities with the Dynamic Earth and many parks/ gardens around. The hotel itself is nice with attentive staff and smiling faces. The Scottish...

Our room was quite large with a king size bed and 2 tartan arm chairs, desk and bed side tables, all without feeling squeezed. And the bathroom was similarly large. Perfectly located, the hotel is around the corner from Holyrood Park and the walk to Arthurs Seat, opposite Dynamic Earth, and an easy walk to the national museum, Royal Mile...

Last minute overnight stay with spa treatment for myself and my daughter. Had been to this hotel many years ago so knew it was good. I have stayed at 5 star hotels in Edinburgh and a few other 4 star. I must say this takes a lot of beating. Room was spotless and staff friendly and efficient. Spa treatment was...

Stayed at the hotel for a short weekend break. Location excellent for walking around Edinburgh, especially the Old Town. Ten minutes walk from Waverley Station to the Hotel. Very clean and well maintained hotel. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Room was very well presented, modern and spotlessly clean. The swimming pool area was modern and functional, with a sauna an...

I booked through Hotline and got a good deal. Stayed 2 nights. Room 316 - refurbished standard room, no view but entirely satisfactory. The carpet generates a bit of fluff: that's because it's new; not a cleaning issue. The room staff are superb; the room presentation faultless. Bathroom is clean and modern: the bath taps produce enough water to run...

One of the best hotels in Edinburgh. have stayed in many even some 5 star hotels but the Macdonald Holyrood is by far the best. Excellent service, high standard of cleanliness throughout the hotel. Rooms nicely furnished and very clean with lovely comfortable beds and very quiet. Staff friendly and efficient with nothing being too much trouble. Highly recommended this...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
