City trip, quiet & easy walk to centre, and well served by numerous bus routes - altogether a smart place to stay, without some of the drawbacks of city centre. Easy range of eating in the hotels, and a very adequate breakfast to see you through the day

Revisited after 20 or so years and weren't disappointed. Still a home from home and just what a large chain hotel isn't. Large traditional family room with large bathroom. Friendly staff and nice meal in the Shakelton Bistro. Only down side is the fair walk into the city, albeit Lothian bus services are excellent to get around.

I would recommend this hotel for its comfort, character and history. The welcome we received was genuine and our room was clean and cosy. Guests should as we did walk to the centre of Edinburgh via Ann Street, Stockbridge and The Colonies. Superb.

Having been brought up in Edinburgh I had heard of Channings, good area, pretty central. I don't often take a chance on small private hotels as they can be of mixed quality and on reaching the location for check in I was a bit apprehensive. However it was extremely good, a bit old fashioned but totally faultless, we did a...

We have stayed in the Howard Hotel and thought that hotel was Absolutly amazing . We tried this hotel being part of the same group. Facinating Library and ground floor lounges. One of the smallest lifts I have ever seen. No lift to basement for bar conservatory where meals are served. I personally found these rooms cold on two accessions...

Spent our birthday weekend in this lovely hotel. Had the most wonderful time! Our room was on the ground floor. Spacious, clean, cosy. Good bathroom. All staff very friendly, warm & welcoming. The location also great - just off the city centre really, you're not too far from anything and yet the area is quite residential and quiet. This was...

We had a lovely two days and three nights in Edinburgh but in hindsight we could have stayed in a much better hotel. We booked what is described as a small double but in our opinion it should be a small single. The room located at the front of the hotel had a large window over looking the street, private...

Would definitely stay here again. Lovely big comfortable rooms and wonderful lounge spaces to relax and read. Good breakfast and restaurant The fact that the houses were owned by Earnest Shackleton added to the sense of history

Just a short stay in Edinburgh over Valentines Day. The Hotel is excellent friendly and helpful on check in. We had a superior room which in fact was more like a suite. It is certainly the largest hotel "room" I have ever stayed in. There is a very good choice at breakfast and the food was good quality. We ate...

We hav been here before many years ago. The dining area was the biggest change. But food was very good and we had a very restful sleep. The garden was protection from noise from the street. All in all, a great place.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Channings in Edinburgh is an informal, relaxed hotel with a very friendly approach. It occupies five Edwardian townhouses in Stockbridge, one of Edinburgh's most popular 'urban villages'. Channings is a wonderfully quirky property which feels a bit like a Scottish country home, full of charming Victorian paintings, prints, books, furniture and memorabilia reflecting the history of previous tenant Sir Ernest Shackleton. ... more   less
