Old-fashioned style probably sums up the Waldorf Astoria (or Caledonian as I have always known it). The format, layout and ambience seem unchanging. Everything is orderly and traditional. Ate "in", enjoying a simple meal, yet the service made it seem special. Love the central staircase - never needed the elevators.

Had a fantastic stay for a few days following our wedding. Hotel were lovely in welcoming and congratulating us, with chocolates left in the room. The staff in general were excellent, from front desk all the way to house keeping. Even though the hotel is a historic building, the hotel is well maintained with modern features where appropriate. Would definately...

The staff was wonderful! I recommend going for a drink at Peacock Alley or Caley Bar. Staff was amazing! The restaurant was lovely and the food exceeded what we expected. I also love this hotel because we couldn't hear anyone below or above us. The shower was awesome and chocolates at night from the staff are an extra treat! This...

We enjoyed a pleasant stay for two nights on a sunny weekend in April. The standard room was nicely furnished, if on the small side for the price (I think we paid about £187 a night for a double room without breakfast). We had a fairly grim view of an internal courtyard, but that wasn't a big deal. The bathroom...

From start to finish this was experience was fabulous. Spent a wonderful afternoon, eating a delicious afternoon tea. From the decor to the staff to the food, could not fault the Waldorf. Would definitely recommend. Not cheap but definitely worth splashing out for a special occasion. You'll not be disappointed.

I booked a night stay at Waldorf Astoria, it was a great surprise when they upgraded us to a one bedroom suite. We were shocked and elated at the suit, it was beautiful. My six year old loved that we had two television so he can watch his children's channel in peace. The suit had everything, it felt like home....

Really looked forward to staying at this beautiful hotel on a private trip. Check in was smooth, but we started to get a bad feeling when we were shown to our room. One level above reception but still below 1st floor, we were taken through a dark corridor with dirty windows. To the left at the end of the corridor...

We booked a Premier Queen Room specifically so that we could have a bath in the room. Our room had no bath. That we had been downgraded wasn't mentioned at check-in; we had to discover it for ourselves. After waiting 30 minutes for a response, we were told that room availability was limited due to building works outside. We were...

The Hotel itself was excellent but the Caley bar disappointed . First visit was excellent, but the next night they appeared to have more important visitors and we were left over 20mins with dirty plates and no drinks. Shame.

The welcome was first class and my car was emptied and parked in no time. Pleasant and helpful staff, but they are unable to hide the fact that this once luxury hotel is now just another Hilton. Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, or the "Caley" as it has become affectionately known among Edinburgh folk, was and still is the epitome of style and excellence. The large, rose-coloured Permian sandstone facade, quarried in Dumfries, dominates the skyline of the city's west end. The hotel has not only remained a focal point for more than one hundred years, but a symbol of the very best of Scottish hospitality. The Caley's pivotal position at the very heart of Edinburgh has always been its greatest asset. Created out of the 19th century railway boom, the five star hotel is looking to the future with confidence and pride in its ability to keep pace with the times. The hotel's reputation is as justified now as it was when the hotel first opened its doors in 1903. ... more   less
